Obama Seeks Patriot Act Extensions

I thought Barry was going to get rid of the Patriot Act?

Justice Department Calls for Extension of All Three Expiring Provisions
by Jason Ditz, September 15, 2009

Despite promises during the campaign that he would review certain of the most intrusive portions of the Patriot Act, President Barack Obama’s Justice Department today is calling for Congress to extend all three expiring provisions, though they were “willing to consider” civil rights protections “as long as they don’t weaken” the president’s powers under the act.

Among those provisions the administration is seeking to extend is the infamous Section 215: the provision which allows law enforcement access to library and bookstore records, without probable cause, for “national security” reasons. The American Library Association has been complaining for years that the provision was overbroad and many fear it could prove to have a chilling effect on the ability to read potentially subversive literature.

Another of the provisions the administration wants extended is the so-called “lone wolf” provision, which amends the FISA definition of “agent of a foreign power” to include people the government can’t establish as having any link to a foreign government or terrorist organization.

Finally they would extend the “roving wiretap” provision in Section 206, which allows the government to wiretap a person and all devices they come into contact with, rather than having to get a warrant to wiretap a given phone or device.

Answer...Marxists like B. Hussein will use the Patriot Act to grease the skids to Fascism. He wants to have his government take over private industry like banking, auto and health care.

W Bush was a liberal, not a conservative. He spent more domestically during his 8 years than did Slick Willie.

I said many times here that there was not much difference between B. Hussein and McCain. McBama was the name many libertarians gave to the 2 main candidates.

There was no conservative running in last November's election.

I don't agree with Joe that Obama will use the patriot act that way. HOWEVER the patriot act is damn scary because of the great potential for misuse and abuse !

I'm curious if all of you who were for it, are still for it ?

I was foolishly for the original act for a short while. Then is was apparent that it was changed and then abused. Why would I have expected that a government would not abuse a power?

Bill, what will B. Hussein use this for? Remember, he can check on people who are not terrorists, can check out any phone or computer they use, without them knowing. This is the same guy who wants any email addresses of people who disagree with him on health care.

I think any of them will use it for political gain. Like Nixon would have done, he wouldn't have needed Watergate.

Obama can check on Gingrich and Palin or anyone he wants.

World-class neocon cop-out. You don't get to change history, Mr. I-Define-Everything. Bush was elected by conservatives, for conservatives. It's why the electorate largely ignored the far right last November, and why those folks are so bratty now.--->JMS

I let the facts define themselves. Its your job to do the spinning, remeber, o self declared god o spin.

Let your hatred of Bush simmer down a little and finally recognize that he spent money (domestically, non military) like a drunken democrat, more than even liberal Slick Willie. You libs should stop hating Bush and accept him as one of yours, a big government spender. He lighted the path for B. Hussein.

Why is BO still continuing Bush's war policy in the Middle East. I thought he was about change?
