les paul studio pickup cover removal questions
I have been giving some thought to removing the dust covers from the pickups in my 2003 Les Paul studio for asthetic apeal ( pickguard too).Has anyone else done this? What can I expect under there? It has the classic 490/498 setup.I read somewhere that They are coated in LOTS of wax and that is is a BItch to remove....

Yeah lots-o-wax under there. I would only remove the wax from the top of the pickup (bobbins), because the wax is used to shield the pickup. There are different methods that you can use to remove the wax including wiping it off with a damp cloth using boiling water so it flows off easier.
Last time I removed the wax I decided to try a method I learned from Stew Mac...goes like this,
Take your shirt off and lay down on your back. Use a bic lighter held about 3 inches away from the pickup to heat the wax.
Allow the wax to drip onto your nipple and dry. Get up and play Jonathon Cougar 'Hurts so good'.
Kidding about that last part, but if you want to try it I cant stop you, go ahead do whatever you want, just leave me out of it.
