So.....

Post by onegunguitar »

as we are riding our motorcycle on our way to Panama City,Fl. on Friday afternoon,I'm in the left lane, cruise control set, passing a pickup truck at the interchange of I-77 south and I-74 east in North Carolina, then the next thing I know this truck slams into the right side of our bike,my girlfriend yells"WHAT THE HELL!!" I managed to get the bike under control without going down on the pavement. My gf tells me later that she had actually had her arm over the bed side of the pick up for a few seconds!!! He later tells us he missed his exit for I-74 and he never saw us,yea,no shit! He was 19 years old and from Indiana state,he apologized about 50 times and admitted he was at fault, blah, blah, blah. I never had time to hit the brakes or blow the horn,he was against us that quick and I was in the center of our lane.No one was seriously hurt and now I gotta play the insurance game. My bike is an 86 Kawasaki touring bike and the parts that need replaced comes to about $4800,haha,the bike's only booked at $2900 and the parts are more than likely no longer made. Anyways,we put the bike in storage for now and rented a car and finished the trip to my mother's house here in hot and humid Fl. What a day!!

Thank God you guys were not hurt!

Man it is hard to see bikes sometimes, I know that sometimes depending on the vehicle it is even hard to see other cars in the blind spot....

Take care bud and have a safe trip!

Every time i take my bike out i get some jack ass that either tailgates me or cuts me off.. Its like they don't even acknowledge that you are there and most the time its a person who is driving and talking on a cell phone.. Its summertime and people gotta keep thier eyes open... Glad your ok, good luck with the bike, If that would happen to me i'd be in the same boat because i have a 83 Honda shadow, damn near impossible to find parts...

Glad you're ok, dude. It's a shame people don't pay more attention. As a CDL driver I'm more critical. He didn't look hard enough, in my opinion. I know it's hard to see some cars and especially bikes, but taking a few extra seconds to make absolutely sure could mean all the difference in the world.

Damn, Scott! That's pretty crazy, but I am so glad to hear that you and your girlfriend are alright. It really sucks about the insurance. It sucks when you have an older model vehicle that's in nice shape but isn't "listed" at a high enough price.

As far as the truck is concerned - I'm a big advocate of the smaller mirrors that stick right to your side mirrors. They're only a few bucks at the auto section of any department store, and they really help with the big blind spot that's inherent to side rear-view mirrors.

I think people rely too heavily on mirrors instead of looking. Turn your head and look. It only takes a second to make for sure that it's clear. Glad you guys weren't hurt. When I started reading, I thought your story was gonna end badly. People are selfish about the roadways. Some A-holes drive as if they are alone on the highways. It's that simple. Some people suck. r:>)

I always check the mirror first then turn to see the blind spot. If you don't know how to see the blind spot, you shouldn't be driving. period.

Jeez, what's up with all the carnage on Rockpage? Everybody suffering for their art. Yesterday at Cosmic Jam I was thirsty. I mean really thirsty. I suffer.  Glad everybody's okay, it sounds like close calls were the rule of the day.--->JMS

Rob said it all. Turn yer frickin' head and look!! Unfortunately for me, I have to rely on mirrors alone with my big truck. That's why I stated in another post about "pass and get it over with." If a big rig comes over at you, nine chances out of ten you're in a spot where he can't see you.
