Vinyl

Post by bassist_25 »

Hey all, I've been picking up some vinyl as of late. There's a really cool music store by where I live, and they have a ton of vinyl, a lot of it for only $1. Yesterday, I picked up a bunch of Chicago, a Triumph disc, some Chet Atkins, AC/DC's Flick of the Switch, Aerosmith's Rocks, and a bunch of other stuff ranging from Kansas to The Manhattan Transfer. The best find was Rush's Archives, which is their self-titled, Fly by Night, and Caress of Steel all bundled up in one package, for only ONE DOLLAR. Sorry, had to brag about that. ;)

Some my favorite records are Dire Strait's Brothers In Arms, which is awesome on vinyl, Weather Report's Heavy Weather, Steve Miller Band's Book of Dreams, which is what great vinyl's all about, and Def Leppard's On Through the Night.

What's some of your vinyl and your favorite vinyl?

I got a few boxes of vinyl from my uncle about a year back that I've been trying to catalogue unsuccessfully for monthes now. The higlights for me included two Venom albums with the original inserts (Welcome to Hell is now framed and hanging on my wall) and a copy of Twisted Sister's "We're not gonna take it" among many others. Album art was so much more awesome to look at on that scale.

I have a LOT of vinyl (I lost track of how many albums, I'd guess-timate well over a thousand). I actually added a lot of new albums in the past 4-5 years when I was doing "Closet Chronicles" on Q94; I picked up on a lot of obscure bands' albums and filled in other holes in my collection.

It's tough to pick favorites, but I think some of my import albums rank up there. I scored a lot of import vinyl '80s metal albums from Music Hut in Altoona before they went out of business. (One was a copy of Raven's first album I bought for a buck; I didn't discover that it was autographed by the band until months after I bought it!) I also did my fair share of vinyl purchases at Arboria in State College. Nowadays, the store that occupies the former Dollar General location in downtown Ebensburg stocks a lot of vinyl; I check there now and then to see if any additional titles have arrived in.

And two sentimental favorite vinyl albums in my collection: my copy of Led Zeppelin's untitled fourth album, which is the first album I ever bought with my own money; it's still in playable shape, and was pressed on that rigid, thick vinyl that doesn't flex! The other sentimental favorite is my copy of Aerosmith's first album, bought when "Dream On" first hit the airwaves in 1973 - I have the original, orange sky cover!

bassist-25,

Sounds like you got some good vinyl at an unbelievably great price.

I have a vinyl record collection of well over 6,000, including numerous, highly collectible records with limited pressings, picture discs, shaped records, colored vinyl, radio promos, and much more. Many of the records I have will never be on CD. I even have some of the first Edison cylinder recordings. If anybody is looking for a certain album, I may have it.

In addition, I also have over 2,000 CD's and cassettes.

I used to be a record dealer at record shows in Pittsburgh and sold lots of stuff I wish I still had but I have many records that are very cool to own.

One of things I always liked about 12" vinyl records was the album jackets with the large and very interesting photos and artwork. Many of the albums in the 60's and 70's also had gatefolds with additional photos and sometimes very cool graphics and such like the spinning wheel on Led Zeppelin III. It was always an added bonus and nice surprise when the song lyrics would be printed on the jacket or the record sleeve.

My dad has probably the most kickass vinyl collection I've gotten to seen. Only a few hundred, its not like the worlds largest vinyl library or anything, but its full of allman bros, skynryd, zz top, marshall tucker, floyd, and all kinds of kickass stuff.
Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.

I have about 400 albums, most of the classic Allman Brothers, Dead, New Riders, Charlie Daniels, and Marshall Tucker, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, 2 Vassar Clemens albums and Dickey Betts Highway Call. I have the 3-D cover of Captain Beyond. I have the Lenny and Squiggy album. I have the Allman Joys and Hour Glass, the 2 pre Allman Brother albums. I have tons of very obscure bands like Papa John Creech, Alabama St. Troopers Road Show, Stone Ponies and Incredible String Band. I have a signed copy of Arlo Guthrie. I used to have a signed copy of Leon Redbone, lost somewhere.

I worked in a record store for 3 years while I was in college and was able to get some really different stuff. I have an early Roy Buchanan that no one has ever heard of, with Billy Price singing on it. I have a Ronnie Hawkins album with a young Duane Allman on guitar.

I should figure out how to record all of these albums onto cd's.

This actually reminded me of my parent's relatively new vinyl collection. They recently bought a "5 in 1" music center, which plays radio, tape, CD, and vinyl, as well as converting vinyl and tape to CD. As a result, they have been picking up vinyl at garage sales and the like. I'd actually forgotten that they were doing that until Undercoverjoe's post, so thanks! :)

As I am visiting with them currently, we all went through what they have. Ironically, they didn't realize half of what they have, including Three Dog Night, the Beatles, and Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass. Hmmm...that may be one of the benefits of vinyl for me. I got to sit down with my parents and go through what for me is music history, but for them is personal history, since some of the collection was bought by them during college.

I'm going to see what I can do about adding to their collection while I am visiting...and see about getting my own music center, so that I can take the vinyl they are thinking about selling at their own garage sales. :)

Most of the albums that people hope might be valuable are not. In particular, the mainstream records by artists such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Rollings Stones, Pink Floyd, etc. are worth very little for two main reasons. There were millions and millions of copies made and they were usually played a lot and not in mint condition. Just because the artist was big does not make it worth much. The albums by some of the huge selling artists that are valuable are the rare pieces such as The Beatles original butcher cover (there are fakes out there), radio promos, autographed jackets or records, picture discs, gold records, limited edition odd pressings like the 7" 2 disc Magical Mystery Tour, records they made or groups they appeared with prior to making it big, etc. In some cases; especially with 45 records, the picture sleeve is worth more than the record because they were limited printings and many times people threw them away and only kept the record, decreasing the amount of sleeves still out there.

I'm up there with JP...about 1000 albums and I stll have the first album that I purchased at Gable's: "Telstar" by the Ventures. The very first album that I learned songs of off was "Wipe Out" the Surfari's. I still have it also.
I've cataloged and alaphbetized my collection which took me quite a while. Some of the albums are in bad shape, but most are OK. Some day I'm gonna sell the whole bunch. (I hope)!

I have collected vinyl for a while now. I gave about 1200 away in 1989 in trade for a Move of my stuff back to LA. I didn't do much then till about 1996 when I totally burnt out on the CD sound.

I have about 800 now and I have them categorized by vinyl condition and by sleeve/jacket condition. That way I can mix and match if I need to to get a good match as long as the units work together.

I keep the spreadsheet on my phone and in Google docs for easy access. I also have my video game collection in there in case I run into some Colecovision or PS2 games and am not sure...

Vinyl does rock, I am waiting for Paul to get back with the info on the store he goes to for vinyl. I really would like to check that place out. Anyone else familiar with places to acquire vinyl?

PS I misspelled "That" and one of the choices was "twat", would really like to check twat place out...

Go figure...
