Beer Lovers
In this thread Tell me some good beers to try.
Price is not a factor. Not trying to get smashed, I want some tasty new (to me) brews.
Here are some of my faves:
Sam Adams (Boston Lager)
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Sapporo
Dos Equis
St.Pauli Girl
Moosehead
Sammy Smiths (Taddy Porter)
Smithwicks
Tetleys
Murphy's Stout
Bass Ale
Chimay White- (Those monks know what's up)
Hacker-Pschorr
I really like pale ales and Ipa's. The hoppier the better. But, I like all beer styles (except I haven't had a lambic that I'm particularly fond of).
Gimme some of your faves and tell me where I can get them locally.
Also, Is there anywhere I can get some Fat Tire around here. I'm told it's amazing.

Sanchez,
When I lived in Belgium I lived about 1 mile from the monastery where they brew Chimay Beers. If you think its good here right out of the vat is unbelieveable.
My travels have also allowed me to go to the Becks Brewery in Breman Germany, again right out of the vat.
A beer that you cannot get in the US that I loved was a little brewery in the Czech Republic called Radegast. This by far is one of the best beers that I have ever had.
Our home office is in Germany and I was in Dusseldorf about a month ago, the local ault (sp?)beers are unbelievable also.
But you have to remember that beer is like sex, there is no such thing as a bad beer some are just better than others.
You need to go to Fat Heads in Pittsburgh on Carson Street sometime. They have an excellent selection of beers on tap (42), both domestic micro brews and imports. Besides their food is excellent also.
http://www.fatheads.com
You can download a PDF of the beers on tap at Fat Heads.
In reference to Fat Tire, I had it when I was working in Nebraska, another good beer.
You have listed Dos Equis, if you can find Negro Modelo or Bohemia these are much better than Dos Equis even if you can find Sol still a much better Mexican Beer.
Other good Belgian Beers are Stella Artois and Jupiler.
Oh crap a subject I know something about, I could go on forever
May tastes in beer run more to the Pilsner, Ale and Lager side of things.
Not big on IPA's and heavy dark's.
If you like traditional German Beers they have just opened the Hofbrau House in the South Side in Pittsburgh. The beers are all brewed on site and are brewed in strict accordance to the German Purity laws for Beer brewing. Some colleagues of mine have gone and said the beer was excellent. I am hoping to make it next week.
Enough already, I have hit the 50 post maek and I can't stop

Wow I could go on forever too, I will just mention a few of my faves:
Chimay (I like the red label best)
Dogfish Head Raison d'Entre
Arrogant Bastard
London Fuller Stout
Rogue Shakespeare Ale
Three Philosophers (not sure of the brand but I think its Oomagang)
lots others....
Dirty, there is a new Sierra Nevada called Torpedo, hoppier than the pale ale. We recently got it at the distributor in Hollidaysburg (Rt 22 near Dunkin Donuts) Quite nice....
A great way to try expensive beers is a the Wegman's in SCollege. They have an EXCELLENT selection of large bottles, its the only way I can afford to try some of them to be honest cuz a case of them is beyond my means. And good luck finding them in bars around here....

Zeno's in State College is also a good place to sample different beers. They also do beer-tasting fests every so often; their next one is April 18 from 3 to 8 PM, sampling Pennsylvania beers. Their website is www.zenospub.com.
One beer out of State College I've started enjoying recently is Otto's Spruce Creek Lager. That's from Otto's Pub & Brewery, www.ottospubandbrewery.com.

Thank You for this. I've been searching for a good bottle shop. The knickerbocker is about the only place I've found in altoona with a decent variety, but they don't sell the 22-24 oz. bottles.ZappasXWife wrote:A great way to try expensive beers is a the Wegman's in SCollege. Big Jimi Cee- Did you get to try the Chimay that the monks only brew for themselves? (I forget what it's called). Also, The mexican restaurant El campesino has Negro Modelo and Sol.
I also had some Russian Imperial Stout at the PSU Michigan game last year. I forget the name , but OMG it was awesome.
Spaten Optimator is also a good beer. I like the darker stuff when the weather is colder (fall/winter) though.

If you like Blue Moon, you should try Wittekerke, like blue moon, it's a heffewiesen (wheat beer) but it's smoother (this is all in my opinion) and has a cleaner after taste, and when I get Wittekerke, I get it with thin slices of lemon and lime in it.redawg wrote:My absolute favorite beer in the world is Blue Moon served with a big fat orange slice. My other faves are Corona and Bass if I can't get Blue Moon.

If you decide to slum it, come to Johnstown. There's a bar that has only microbrews and imports. It's called Tulunes Southside Saloon in the Moxham section of town before you go over the bridge to the Ferndale section of town. This town is so effed up.

Is that where Johnstown Brewing Company used to be? I really enjoyed their White Hat Pale Ale.REDillon wrote:If you decide to slum it, come to Johnstown. no, the JBC was on Menoher Blvd, in Westmont. The South Side is on the border of Ferndale and Moxham on I believe Central Ave. It's basically right across the street from dollar general and right beside the do it yourself car wash, you really can't miss it.ToonaRockGuy wrote:Is that where Johnstown Brewing Company used to be?
