NORTHERN CAMBRIA - Northern Cambria Borough Council members have tabled suspending its embattled police chief's health care benefits, which have been paid since the officer was charged with driving under the influence, assault, insurance fraud, forgery and theft last year.
Police Chief Kevin Stanek, 49, was suspended in May without pay, a month after he was charged with driving under the influence and assault on a police officer.
While the assault charges were dismissed at a June preliminary hearing, Stanek is still facing DUI charges.
In October, Stanek was charged with insurance fraud relative to an alleged hit-and-run crash involving his personal vehicle. In an unrelated case, he also was charged with theft after he allegedly submitted forged doctor slips to the borough in an effort to collect unused sick pay.
While Stanek has not received a paycheck since his May suspension, the borough has continued to pay his $1,700 monthly health insurance bill, which includes coverage for his spouse.
The council adjourned to executive session shortly after opening a recent meeting, citing personnel issues, and did not divulge further information upon returning to the meeting.
When council members got to the insurance issue listed on the meeting's agenda, members voted unanimously to table the matter until next month.
The agenda noted that the council had planned to suspend all of Stanek's benefits until his legal matters are adjudicated in Cambria County Court.
Last month, the council voted to pay Stanek for his unused vacation time that accrued in his 2007-08 contract.
