Fender HRD problem

Post by VinceM25 »

I have a fender hot rod deluxe that is making a high pitched vibrating noise when i play certain notes or frequencies. the sound isnt coming out of the speaker and i cant figure out what it is. if anyone has experienced this with an amp before and knows how to fix it, let me know

Has this been happening in different rooms or just in one location?

different rooms. It's really strange. it only happens when i play certain notes, and it only happens when i get to 5 and up on the volume knob with my guitar volume up pretty good. the only way i cant hear it at all is to turn the volume up way to high for practicing in a small room or to turn it down so low that there just arent many vibrations.

and this only started happening recently. i opened up the back of the amp and looked around but couldnt really find anything obvious.

ps. I get a lot of mixed reviews about HRD's from people and even all the web site forum reviews seem to be mixed. I'm wondering if i should consider selling it even though I know i wont get more that $500 for it and buying something else. maybe a nomad or a lonestar. for some reason i like having combo amps and just adding small cabs rather than heads with big cabs.

It may be a two man operation to find out where the sound is coming from. One person to play while you listen closely to the amp. Another avenue to explore would be borrowing a signal generator and sweeping the frequency until you find the hot note. That would make it a lot easier to pinpoint.

If it isn't coming out of the speaker then it has to be something loose in the amp which resonates at certain frequencies. You could also try taking it completely apart and tightening everything down.
... and then the wheel fell off.

i finally figured out what it was. believe it or not, it was the metal fender plate on the front of the amp vibrating really fast on certain notes.... i have my HRD stacked on top of a fender 112 extension cab and the nameplate on the front of that was vibrating too. so all it took was sliding some old picks in between the plates and the tolex. amazing that it was something so simple and right in front of my face........

the front panel of my buddy's Peavey 6505 did the same thing; the screws kept coming loose and making a weird sound that we finally figured out the culprit.

ever have the support that connects the baffle borad and the back of your cabinet get loose or shrink up? WOW- does that sound like shit!!! it sounds like your cab is ready to explode lol....
