"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.
I think that Buckethead is a technically savvy guitar player, but he just doesn't fit GNR for me. The old GNR was greasy, sleazy, blues influenced rock, and Slash fit that mold perfectly. I don't want to hear sweep arpeggios in a GNR song... sorry Axl, you struck out.

Axl stopped being relevant in 1992. His crybaby pretentiousness was annoying back then; now it's just pathetic.
On the other hand, Velvet Revolver, Slash's Snakepit, and Izzy's solo stuff has all been top-notch, IMO.

That was the best part about this new album.
I was gonna throw in "Appetite for DePepper" and cure my cotton mouth with Axl's free Dr.Pepper....sumbitch...there goes my New Year's plans...thanks Axl.

i must be in the minority cuz i really, really dig it. i do look/listen to it as a different entity than GnR however. let me put it this way- i love Axl's new (using the term incredibly loosely) solo project named GnR- Chinese Democracy. i like the soaring vocals and three dimensional feel of it. if Phil Collins was a badass, this is the album he would make.
I like this part:
""Sources have said that record bosses are fuming because Rose has been AWOL
for the last two months - meaning he hasn't done any promotional work for the album.""
SURPRISE! When this is a shocker to a label...can see why the industry's in the pooper.

HEY
I actually like what I've heard so far. I try to separate the music from the individual. There's a ton of messed up musicians out there, but a good song is a good song and from what I've heard Axl, (as messed up as he is) is still capable of writing good songs.

I haven't heard the record ,only two songs. Heard the song "Better" on XM yesterday and i gotta admit i had to stop and listen.I was pretty impressed.Loads of kickass licks,no they're not Slash's greesy gravy soaked blues(which i love),cool breakdown, and i thought Axl sounded pretty cool. All this and i'm not really a GNR fan.Never have been.So i'm not sure i'll buy it but it sounded good to me.Ofcourse it's not 1994 so some people are gonna hate it no matter what.

Completely agree with that. It seemed like a lot of the licks and solo's were forced. Really wasn't disappointed though because I didn't expect much.

about the guitar playing... when duff left, they got a better bass player and featured him more in songs. just like when jason left metallica. what i think it boils down to is more like axl saying "hey slash, fuck you, look what i have now." whether slash gives a shit, i dunno, but it seems to me that alot of bands, not just metallica and gnr try to feature newer, better members just as way of showing the person that left that there is "someone better out there"
once you get past the obvious attempts to make slash jealous and relise it really is just a cd with the name g n r on it, and not a g n r cd...... i like it. i think the songs rock hard, have good groove, and some are even kinda catchy. the breakdown in better i love.
the guy that let me rip the cd (because honestly, i refuse to pay for it. it's been to long in the making and i'll be damned if i'll help axl pay that 3 million dollar production cost) is what i consider the biggest guns an roses fan i ever knew, or will know. and he described it to me as "an updated use your illusion 2."
and i understand what he means.
i didn't get the free dr. pepper.

Ya, I've only heard the one tune, and it only, maybe, twice. Wasn't bad, and is prolly
better than most of what I've heard lately, in my opinion. Still, for that long in the
process, would like to have seen more of "the razor" aspect.
Too much tweadling can make a good song "Eh" for me. Though I was never a big
GNR fan, Slash's playing did have character. Buckethead's...well...boring....and even
a KFC "hat" can't make his scales suffice for "music" (Ya, ya, I know....Just never
been keen on the sweep-y wankin').
Oh yeah, with regards to Paul's post earlier, Izzy writes some really good albums.
Cool stuff.

cool`
I think the album is cool. It is different. I think that Bumblefoot is a good player, what is with the guitar player names? The rest of the band is hot, they are all top notch.
In regards to waiting, I can't say that I believe anyone really "waited" for this. They were just sort of still alive when it came out. I don't think this is the kind of statement that "Black Ice" is for AC/DC.
I am hoping that with this album people start to say "no More" to the loudness problems with recorded media these days. I hate it, I can barely listen to new release cause they all sound so distorted.
Death Magnetic epitomized that trend and this release, Chinese Democracy, continues it...
Hopefully it will go away soon cause it is killing me...

I gave it an honest shot and I can say it doesn't do it for me. I'm looking for kick-ass, and only 4 or so songs have it. The rest are mid-tempo melodramatic textbook Axl. I give him credit for trying something different. He's got the guts to keep going. It's hard to give credit to any one guitar player because so many had a hand in it (if you're a guitar player and read Guitar World, the latest issue features Bumblefoot and he covers all this) but I can hear the tell-tale Buckethead riffage and solos.
Production-wise, I think the hard rockers lack. The treble is too high and can be unbearable at a times. Again a solid effort, but I'll pass.
