What are you listening to?

Post by songsmith »

As the year reaches it's end, I tend to reflect, and I was wondering:

What is in your CD player right now?

What CD spent the most time in the player this year? Why?

Right now -- A compilation of bootlegs and studio stuff from Jason Mraz, mostly DL'ed from Kazaa. Jason's hot on Adult Contemporary right now... great songwriter, very melodic, and doesn't stick to normal song structures and rhyme schemes. I'm old.

This year -- Another compilation from Kazaa downloads... this time it's Government Mule. Why? Bootlegs rule, and Gov't Mule allows taping, so the quality is decent. And, I'm really into the blues-based jam-band stuff lately. Ten-minute songs, kickass guitar soloing, and you can tell they're enjoying themselves... it all reminds me of a Hurricanes gig.

I've been listening to the new Fleetwood Mac Say You Will, it has more of a Lindsey Buckingham influence than any FMac has for a long time. A few of the token radio-friendly boring songs, but lots of really good other ones. Also, Dylan's Blood on the Tracks because its taking my current depression to a new (lower) level. Comforting somehow. Also that new Jack Johnson is good. And old Johnny Cash...the new one is good but that is too depressing.

I made a comp CD of the Police & Sting. It's my work CD. I've been listening to it every day for about 6 months. Keeps me from blowing up my office.

Some days Type O works, some times mushroomheads latest for those days that just arent going so well.

Also, I listen to a lot of Zappa's guitar stuff. My favorites are 'Watermelon in Easter Hay' and 'Muffin Man'. I have to say that is what I have listened to the most.

A LOT OF WHAT I LISTEN TO depends on time of day and mood. Porcupine Tree's "In Absentia" CD spent more time in my home CD player this year than anything else, especially late nights when I'm winding down. Tool's "Lateralus" and The Grimm's "Resurruption" have also spent a lot of time in the player. The new Alice Cooper "Eyes of Alice Cooper" CD has done a lot of recent time in the player. If my mood is a little rowdier, Motorhead's "Snake Bite Love" gets my pulse racing. In the car, either Hurricanes CD and the "Rocksbury: Musicians for Kids" CD make great road listens. But I'm always listening to (and reviewing) new stuff, too, so these CD choices might all be different if you ask me that question a year from now...

Rush and Slipknot!

Diverse, isn't it?

Right now: A Bowie compilation, and some stuff from And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead (cool band, sounds like Sonic Youth having a cage match with Radiohead).

Over the past year: Whatever my band happened to be learning at the time! Which means burning 2-3 songs to a disk and repeating them endlessly. Guaranteed to make you a little less sane. For recreational listening, it would have to be Coldplay, because I don't listen to the radio and therefore aren't completely sick of them like everybody else is. :P

Cheers to Dwertz for mentioning "Muffin Man". Kickass lead. Maiden's new "Dance of Death" is definately worth a listen. The new Offspring "Splinter" sounds good. I've been on a Black Sabbath binge, lately. Especially "H & H", "Mob Rules", and "Vol 4". Just got a new copy of Rainbow's "Rainbow Rising". Can't go wrong with Dio and Blackmore. A few more great jams I've listened to lately, out of the archives....Testament, "Practice What You Preach"...Overkill, "Years of Decay", and Nazareth, "Razamanaz".

The Crown's newest release-Possessed 13 is in right now, has been for a few days. Arch Enemy-Wages of Sin is the winner for me for the whole year...just a phenomenal metal album. Bach's 25 greatest pieces is a close second....

Cool topic....

As of late, I've been listening to

A lot of Jazz compilations. (mostly Bebop stuff but there's some Fusion in there also including Howland, Laug, Morrison & Pinnick; it's two of the guitarists from Chicago getting together to do a Fusion jam. If you are into Chicago or Allan Holdsworth/Robben Ford type of Fusion, check it out)

I Mother Earth - Dig and Scenery and Fish: I Mother Earth, the band from Canada that should have been 10 times bigger than what they were. Dig's heavier with a lot of SRV, Zepplin and Santana influence. Scenery and Fish has a more "arty" Beatlesque sound to it. (and was also produced by Alex Leifson from Rush!)

Dream Theater - Awake: Images and Words is everyone's favorite DT album but mine is Awake. It's great to hear John Petrucci and Kevin Moore tear things up.

Girls Against Boys - Freakonica: Yeah, this is GVSB's "sellout album", but I like it.

Goo Goo Dolls - Superstar Carwash: I think this is GGD's best album by far. Falling Down, Lucky Star, On the Lie, Girl Next to Me, ect, great pop-rock album.

Third Eye Blind - S/T: God, Stephen Jenkins has to be the most underrated songwriter of the 90's. Just listen to "I want you" or "Motorcycle Drive by".

Cypher 7 - Security: Ambient electronic stuff. Kind of in the vein of The Orb, but more atmospheric.

Shootyz Groove - Hipnosis: I have Jammin in Vicous Environments also, but I prefer this album. It has brighter production, more of a "311 vibe" to it, and their new bass player has a more groovy funk influence style. I think the rapping flows better also.

Garth Brooks - In Pieces: It's hard for me to pick my favorite Garth Brooks album cause I love them all but I've been listening to this one a lot. It has a killer cover of New Grass Revials "Callin' Baton Rouge". (with Bela Fleck guesting on Banjo!)

Athiest - Elements: I was in a big Death Metal mood last month for some reason. (had to rock out to all of my Entombed, Obituary, and Broken Hope albums I have) Of course, Elements will always be my favorite DM album.

Stabbing Westward - Darkest Days: I'm really dating myself by mentioning this album. :D I just listened to it earlier tonight and forgot how much I loved it. Truely a piece of art.

Hawkwind - In the Beginning: A cheaply recorded live album I picked up in a bargain bin somewhere. This was back when Lemmy was in the band. Of course it has they're cult hit, Masters of the Universe. Also has my 2nd favorite Hawkwind song (the first being Space is Deep), Hurry On a Sundown.

Spin Doctors - Turn It Upside Down: I just gots to have my Spin Doctors. This is less jammy then their first album and is more song oriented. Still a great album though.

Amen to that. Joe Lynn Turner Rainbow was alright though.

Best Testament album. (Low's pretty awesome also) But am I the only one who thinks that the intro to Sins of Omissions sounds like the theme to Knight Rider?

AAAHHH that question always comes up in discussions with musicians. Right now I am listening to Fuel's new album "Natural Selection" and Outkast's new double disc, and of course Third Standard's new CD, "Rabbit Run" (some bias is included in that selection). This year has been a great year for music in my opinion (and I know I might step on some feelings here, but....with the exception of the pile of shit Metallica called a new album). Our Lady Peace released a killer live album which inhabited my cd player for about two months. Albums like Incubus 's "Make Yourself" as well as my many bootlegs and burnt (that's right I said burnt, musician or not, $18 is ridiculous) copies of music by Wilco, are my favorites to listen to at work, as well as "How the West Was Won" the live Zep album released this year as well. There are so many more.....but it hurts my head to think about them....

Ahhh... I Mother Earth - fantastic band with really cool songs. Met those guys at Crowbar. Very cool guys, especially their bassist, bassist. 8)

I'm going to go dig those up right now and take a listen.

Ron, I'm glad that someone else out there recognizes I Mother Earth for the great band that they are. I try to tell everybody I meet about them.

Colton, good call on Roberth Randolph. It's like Hendrix reincarnated as a steel guitar player. His music has a lot of soul to it also. Something that I think's lacking in a lot of music today.

Robert Randolph's going to be on a live show on Music Choice (digital cable music channels on Charter and others) sometime soon...check musicchoice.com for schedule.
Way cool band, I've been into the Sacred Steel sound for a few years now. I heard about him first in a guitar magazine, then happened upon his appearance on Austin City Limits with the Blind Boys of Alabama (also frickin' excellent, those old dudes outgroove EVERYBODY, look them up). I also saw him on a documentary about unsung American music, playing at church... he can play honkytonk style, jazz-fusion, funk, old school R&B, or go way psychedelic, or cop Jimi Hendrix like a MF. And his tone... that "woman tone" gives me a chubby every time.
If he knew there were this many fans around here, we could get him to play nearby... he's only from Jersey, a few hours away. I'm in his fan club, and he's been known to do stuff like that.------->JMS

That would be cool Johnny. I normally don't go out to concerts but I would definately go see Robert Randoph. He should get together with Ralph Mooney and do a jam. Now that would be some awesome steel playing.
