ACORN and the Fight Against Voter Suppression

ACORN released a video today, produced by Brave New Films, that calls attention to both the concocted Republican issues of voter fraud and the Republican coordinated attempts at voter suppression.

This video, which will be widely distributed via the web, is part of an ongoing campaign by ACORN to set the record straight. The United States has the lowest rate of voter participation of any western nation. Over the last 18 months, ACORN has waged a voter registration campaign, which successfully helped enfranchise 1.3 million new voters. Recently the McCain-Palin campaign, the Republican party and some sensationalist members of the media have been on a weeks-long campaign to discredit ACORN over bogus allegations of "voter fraud." This video examines both the skewed media attention and the real story of ACORN's voter registration program. It also aggressively calls attention to the ongoing campaign of suppression, which affects far more voters than anything recently covered by the mainstream media.

ACORN is planning screening house parties in 17 cities around the country, including: Washington, D.C.; Boston; Springfield, Mass.; Los Angeles; Cleveland; Columbus; Cincinnati; Philadelphia; Hartford; Orlando; Houston; Dallas; Bridgeport, Conn.; Detroit; Flint; Twin Cities and Charlotte.

The video is available online at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdNgMKPV9xQ

Another opinion of Acorn, from a mostly liberal biased network, CNN.

How does guilt by association work ?

Obama did not go out and get illegal voter registrations. Acorn turned in their own people when they found out what was going on.

So because there were some people misusing the voter registration forms, unknown to upper management, it's Obama's fault ?

And when upper management found out about it and then DID something about - it's still Obama's fault ?

I don't get your negative comments. Acorn is increasing voter registration. Are you against that ?

And the Republican agenda to supress vote is OK with you ?

Wait...how is increasing the voter registration with fake people helpful? To me, it doesn't matter if Obama is connected to them or not. Doesn't sway my vote either way on this topic. However, I believe that ACORN should in fact be held responsible if they have committed a crime in the election process. And it needs to follow the chain of command within the organization. You start with the low guy who was responsible for the fake forms being filled out or having people who are not eligible to vote to register (in some cases, 15 year olds were asked to complete registration forms). Then their supervisors should be held accountable because they have a level of responsibility.

The right to vote is precious.

Republicans - just skip to the yellow, please !

I try to stay out of these conversations but come on! Acorn turned in the voter registrations that they found to be questionable. They did that on their own. Yeah some guy registered Tony Romo. Do you really think that Tony is going to show up to vote again? Or for that matter do you think that Mickey Mouse is going to show up and vote? And who do you think Mickey will vote for?

A company hired people to go out and register voters, a very small percentage of the people they hired seem to have a "moral" issue and they broke the rules. When it was discovered the company turned those illegitimate registrations in as illegitimate. So the company is bad?

Worse case, say we do register "Underdog" a thousand times in each state, do you really think he is going to show up and "Rock the Vote"?

On the other hand the voter suppression that is occurring is frightening. Did you know that 1 out of 5 minority voters do not have a Drivers License? Did you know that it is not illegal to not have a drivers license? What if a state requires a drivers license to vote? Do you realize that eliminates 1/5 of minority voters who just happen to be Democrats? Is that alright?

I know he is a Dem so he has to be full of shit. But wait could it be that we are just tired of the crap that comes from the Right Wing. Try as I may I still don't get it...

I am so sad about what always appears to be unethical standards.

This is where the conversation of Unity comes in. Which party do you feel is doing the most to bring the people of the US together and what makes you think that? Do you think that we are stronger as a country when we are divided or when we are together? Do you think that people will stand behind Obama if elected the way they stood behind Bush?

Don't get me wrong, I think that the republican party is truly God's party in the respect that they are all about bringing the biblical "end of Days" to our shores but I am still curious....

And just say that as a staunch republican I hire some guys to go out and sell Kool aid to children. Say that the guys actually give them the red pill and they become enlightened and can see the truth. As the republican sponsoring the kool aid distribution am I responsible for those nasties who went out and gave them the red pill?

Or am I a victim also?

If the republicans gave as much a damn to the wall street losers that f'ed everyone's retirement as they do about this damn ACORN thing, they might have won this year...

A few years back, it took 3 tries for me to register in Blair County. I mailed the form in twice, no dice. (I called each time after a month or so and was told they never received it. ) The third time I walked it in.

Don’t get mad but after I posted this I looked into it a little more. From what I can gather on the internet this company was started in the 70’s and very small. They seemed to do wonderful things for the people in this country but as time went on corruption seemed to sink in. Things like they didn’t want to pay their workers min wage and they fired employees for contacting the union about working 54 hour weeks with no over time. Their past is riddled with kind of crap.

But this still does not convince me Obama had any other plans then to register more voters. I agree that the suppression by republicans on lower class voters is ugly business even more so then ACORN's past.

It isn't a crime to register Mickey Mouse as a voter. It's a crime if you go and vote as Mickey Mouse.

ACORN, Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright (whose name you will hear a lot AGAIN over the next 2 weeks, it's the next McCain attack course), Rezko...
It doesn't matter a bit. It won't stop after the election, either. Suddenly, Republicans will do another 180, and decide that patriotism DOES include criticizing your president. :D -------->JMS

Ah, but wait, there's more! :) Is everyone forgetting about the Voting machines? Namely who owns the company that manufatured the vast majority Americans will be using and what political party they backed 4 years ago (and those PESKY exit polls)? (If you'd like to see an example of Voter fraud, go to: www.witnesstoacrime.com and click on the link to view the dust jacket.) I keep noticing McCain and company saying 'WHEN' he's President, Obama and company, 'IF'. Until the election is over, I won't count my chickens (B'GOCK!) before they're hatched...uh, make that Vote before it's cast. :D
