Football armbands?!?

Post by BDR »

As my wife and I enjoyed a weekend of college/pro football, we both found ourselves wondering, WTF is the reason for those skinny arm bands a lot of players wear, usually around the elbow region.

After doing some reading, it seems they are nothing more than window dressing, just a fashion statement. Now, as I read up on this, I found that many high school players are not permitted to wear them due to the fact that they provide no benefit.

I guess my question is, does anyone think it's that big of a deal for high schoolers to wear bands around their arms and do any local high school teams wear them? Reminds me of Jim McMahon wearing a non-sanctioned head band with "Rozelle" written in magic marker and catching hell from the league.

I think HS kids should be allowed to wear them. School districts like to control as much as they can. This is just one more area. Kids do not know how to live in the real world after hs because of stupid bullshit like this.
School should help you be an adjusted adult member of society. Most times it has the opposite effect, because of all the rules and institutional mentality kids go apeshit with all their newfound "freedoms" upon completion.

It would be cool for our grandson to wear one in a color that no one else on the offense side would be wearing so we can spot him....when the play starts, they all look the same :)

What are the arm bands on football players arms for?
In: Football History

Answer: Bands that are worn the wrist are for sweating, however most all football players, tennis players etc; will wear tight bands around their elbows because the tendons of the elbow slowly and painfully begin to pull away from the bone of the elbow during stress. This is where the pain in your elbow originates. With continued repetitive use of the elbow, the tendon-bone connection continues to weaken and the pain in your elbow steadily increases. By placing continual pressure on the tendons connecting the Flexor and the Extensor muscles to the Medial and Lateral Epicondyles, thus significantly reducing the tension at the point of connection to the bone. Reduceing the stress on the Tendinitis,

I think it is just stems back to them trying to snuff out individuality. I personally think it is stupid, but, it is a way for players to stick out and that's a no-no anymore. If kids are no longer allowed to dye their hair "unnatural" colors, why should this be any different?

It's all bullshit, if you ask me.

If they want to do, let them. Who is it hurting?

That post above is the real answer with stopping tendonitis because I had a friend who wore them when we played baseball, but I have also known people who wear them on their calves to prevent shin splints. Obviously people wear them now because everyone else is doing it kind of deal.
