Guitar players, list your current gear setup

Post by metalchurch »

I know this was done a while back, but influences have changed, bands have changed for some of you, and we've all bought/sold/traded equipment since then.
Basically I'm curious to see what your current gear is.

ie: guitar/effects/amp

****I know alot of guys do not normally post much in the tech, but I'd really like for that to change, so if you guys know a rockpage member who plays guitar in a band, or at home, please urge them to post here. I'd like to see as many gear setups as possible posted on here.****

My setup has somewhat stayed the same since last time. I got rid of a few things in my rack for simplicity's sake, and changed my EQ'ing. I had my poweramp serviced with new tubes so that helped out with the sound dramatically. Here's the current setup:

Guitars:
Jackson KV2 (bolt on) - Eb tuning 9-42
Jackson KV Standard - DGCFAD tuning 9-42
Jackson KV3 - C# tuning 10-46
*(Jackson V's all have EMG'81's with 1volume only)

Charvel JEL mutt -(Seymour TB-4 JB/1volume) - Eb tuning 8-38
Kramer/Jackson V mutt -(DiMarzio DP166 Breed/1volume) E tuning 8-38

Then from guitar it goes into:
Korg DTR1000 Tuner
Boss MT-2 Metal Zone
Engl 620 Tube Preamp (3 Groove Tubes 12AX7's)
Marshall 9200 Poweramp 100W (Electro Harmonix 12AX7 & 12AT7 Preamp tubes /TungSol 5881 Power tubes)
Marshall 1960B cabinet w/ Celestion G12T-75's (all stock)
Then it's all nestled into an SKB 6 space, like tits in a bra.

So, let's hear what you guys got in your setups!!!

I'll just stick to my electric guitar setup, 'cause really, most here couldn't care less what my lap steel setup is.

Guitars:
Peavey T-15, natural ash
BC Rich Bronze Warlock, black with Bass Pro Shops stickers
(I sold off all my others)

Effects:
Arion Stage Tuner pedal into an Ernie Ball VP Junior volume pedal, then to amp. Occasionally, I use a Boss overdrive (OD-2, I think) to sharpen the the edges, but I'm not a lead player, so I mostly leave that at home.

Amp:
Hughes & Kettner Attax 80 (oddly, it's 100W solid-state, not 80W)
OR
Laney GC-50A. I call it the Swiss Army Amp. It's got a channel-switching electric side, like any guitar amp, but also has an acoustic side. The acoustic side adds a piezo tweeter, pulls some "electric guitar amp" character out sounding more full-range, and inserts a notch filter for feedback control. I use it for everything, but it really excels when I play lap steel on the electric side, and use the acoustic side for my harmonica mic... the notch filter lets me play harp LOUD, which is what every harp player wants in a band situation. You can also use both side simultaneously if needed (switchable) and each side sports it's own effects loop. Truthfully, the dirty channel of the electric side isn't the best I've ever heard, but it does so much other stuff well I don't mind, and I'm not a super high-gain fan, anyway. People use way too much gain, and it turns into a muddy, buzzy mess.
I also have a few small practice-amps, like a Marshall MG-15, a Yorkville 25W, a Peavey Transtube 20W, and a couple of others out in the garage. My prized Silvertone model 1482 tube-amp is dead with a burnt transformer, and I could buy another one cheaper and easier than fixing it, but that's way down the list of to do things.------->JMS

Pretty much cheating and grabbing from the other post.

Modded strats (Have Seymour Duncan Hotrails in the bridge. The "humbucker"
that fits in the single coil slot. Use the older versions. They’re probably more
akin to a P90 than a humbucker. More mid-y, less high end than a single coil,
no more sustain than a single. Sand the backs of the necks down a bit.
Strings are DR 10-46.

Live setup is:

TubeWorks 752. Was originally a combo, but I tore it apart and built a
head shell for this. TungSol 12AX7 in the tube side. Rest goes into:

Korg Tuner
Ernie Ball Volume
Boss Overdrive SD-1 (For a volume boost).
Cry Baby Wah
TECH 21 SansAmp GT2
Boss CE-3 Chorus (From the very early 80s. I’ve read this is the pedal
that made Boss redesign the layout of the knobs to the staggered, with
smaller in the middle. You can’t see the light on this version.
Ibanez Flanger SF10
DOD Phaser FX20-B
DOD DFX9 Digital Delay
Carvin footswitch (Gets no real use. I don't use reverb and it's rare I go
to the drive channel anymore).

Lopo 2x12 cab with Eminence Legends

Will throw in Ibanez Pre Ped in there at some point to see how it works
out.

http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.c ... D=34431500

Also have an H&K (Not the Attax from a coupl’a years ago) head sitting in
the basement. Got it not too long ago and have only plugged it in once or
twice. Considering using it to try some different rectifiers, etc…or selling
it. I dunno. Assorted amps, effects, guitars/parts sitting around.

Recently put Ernie Ball strings on my acoustic and really liked them. Went
From Ernie Ball, to GHS, now to the DRs, through many years.

OrangeKick,
LOVE the Toronados! One of my favourite guitars. A "someday I’ll get
one" item.

What do you think of the HellaTones?

Songsmith:
Your Hughes&Kettner Attax 80 , is that a combo amp?
That is weird that it's called an '80' and not a '100' considering it's 100 watts. I've never heard of those, what do you think of that thing?
What features and controls does it have?

VENTGtr:
You also have a Hughes&Kettner Attax, you said your's is a head unit though. Is it tubed or Solid State?
What features and controls does it have?
What do you think of it?

I never had an H&K, but from what I hear they are a quality company.
I believe that they're mostly known for their Bass equipment, right?

My Attax 80 is a combo. I can't really say why its called "80."
It's what I need it to be... channel-switching, verb, has a Modern/Classic switch on the OD channel. It's loud enough, and tough as all get out. It's been connected to 220V, dropped off the truck, and keeps on going. I bought it used from Tommy Brown at Jarrett's before they closed.--->JMS

I keep it pretty simple...

HM Stratocaster -> Digitech GNX2 (but never use amp modeling, due to... ) -> 1965 Fender Princeton or 1967 Fender Bandmaster
Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.

I'm down to a short list:

Standard Strat w/ vintage noisless pickups
Fulltone distorion ( forget the model )
Crybaby Wah
Electro-harmonix boost
Peavey Classic 30

I'm not a gear junkie, I like it simple.

MC,

H&K makes incredible stuff. Their Matrix amps, and a bunch of others are really
incredibly built and great sounding. They have a Lifeson model out now that I'd
love to try.

I had an Attax Combo that was, maybe, the best built amp I've ever seen. Was
just solid all the way around. Unfortunately, and I think mine was an anomoly,
it was the most souless thing I've ever played through. Nothing brought any
life to it. Lent it to a friend who knows a ton about amps and he said the exact
same thing. Sold it to a guy who loves it, so who knows. I'm thinking with that
particular amp, if I would've used a Boss GT-8 or something, it would been fine.
I've always heard good stuff about the Attax and got Songsmith's thoughts on
them. Hence, I think it was just something with that amp. Tube pre on drive
channel and (I think) SS clean, solid state power.

What have now is a Vortex. I wanted something solid state to run the Tech21
through on the clean side. It's overdive side is actually really good and does a
good tubey sound. Cleans side is good as well. Again, built incredibly. But, what
I found is that I still like my TubeWorks better so it sits.

Jimi,
Using a Fender now? What happened to the Mesa?

So many amps in the world, so little time.... :(

+1 for that. The TriAmp is amazing. Or any Engl. They always talk about the "British sound" and "American sound" in amps, but the "German sound" is distinctive and wonderful too.

Yeah, I have been watching a few on eBay every now and then and it looks like they can be had used for a really good price. I have always been interested in the Triamp. There is also a guy over here who was asking me about joining a Rush tribute band on guitar and since Alex plays the Triamp... 8)

Well, we shall see if that ever sees the light of day. I think it would be loads of fun. I have been "borrowing" riffs and chord voicings from Alex for years, so I feel that I should at least put those back in their proper place.

They call that giving back to the community.

That would be interesting to hear that setup once it's done. I've heard some great H&K rigs, they definitely have their own distinct sound.

Jimi, yeah I'm diggin the German sound!! Bush's 100w Powerball head totally floors me! I've never heard a head that sounds that tight in my life.
I considered selling my rack and buying one. Maybe after I try out a few Mesa preamps and maybe that Engl Special Edition Preamp.
That's the main reason that I've stayed rackmount was for the experiments.

But there comes a time when you just want to say fuck it all, and simply plug in and play. Which I think that's the conclusion that Bush came to.
