New Lychesis song up!

Post by J Michaels »

Alright!! Check it out - Dave has finished mastering our song "Break" and it's now available on the myspace - http://www.myspace.com/lychesis . The rough mix version of "The Call" is still there as well (for now), and Dave is now mastering that one and "Prosperity?" so we should have those in the near future. Once those are done, the EP will be officially complete and ready for distribution.

Meanwhile, we are recording the rest of the songs for the full CD, which we hope to have completely finished by the end of the year. Working titles on the remaining tunes are "Beyond the Veil", "BSO", and "All That I Am".

Once everything is done and the CD is ready to put out, we're going to have a CD release party. We're working on arranging a first-rate venue for that, and we're hoping a few hundred or so of our closest personal friends will be there. But, of course, more on that later - first things first, and we're working on getting the songs finished.

Anyway - check out the new song.

J., I gave your new one a listen, and man what can I say, but wow!
There's alot going on vocally throughout the entire song, which is a good thing, and it fits the music well.
You have a very wide and dynamic range for sure.
The music is complex also, and it has an odd sense of timing to it which is somewhat disturbing in a good way. It left me kind if wondering what was coming up next.
The lead break really caught me off guard and not what I was expecting at all.

It reminds me of alot of bands but it is original enough that I cannot put a comparison to anyone in particular.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, thanks for sharing.

Were the vocals tough to lay down? Seems that there's alot of layering and overdubs.
Did you do the backups yourself also?

Wow - thanks again for the comments. Glad you guys are digging it. We're rather proud of the fact that you can kinda sense what our influences are, but we try not to sound like any one thing / band, so I guess it's working!Image

As for metalchurch's ?s....

The vocals weren't really that hard to do - just took persistence. The lead vocal track had about 3 or 4 different incarnations. I kept tweaking it, particularly in trying to get it to sound more aggressive and edgy.

The "whispery" vocals between the main vocal during the verses were actually done by our drummer, Darryl. I think he really nailed that sort of threatening, ominous tone I wanted to hear. I thought a voice other than mine might work better, sort of an opposing player in the flow of the song, since the lines I am singing are from one point of view, and Darryl's are diametrically opposed.

The backups on the chorus are a combination of Bill, Mark, and me doing different harmony lines. The really cool one is the minor third that Mark performed (the one that gives it an almost Alice-in-Chains kind of feel.) We would each do our harmony, then double it for richness and depth.

The crowd chants of "Break!" are most everyone in the band and some friends all gathered around the mic in the middle of the studio. There were about 8 or 9 of us, as I recall, and we would do the part, then all change positions around the mic, do the part again, shift positions, etc. We did that about 5 times, so it's alot of voices.

Dave, the lead guitarist, did the mastering and added the effects. This really brought out the hugeness in the crowd chants, and just made the whole thing rock.

the only reason bands play this kind of stuff is because they love it; kudos to you. too bad you don't live in Europe. you don't sound like any one band, but you maintain all your influences nicely.
good job, fellas.

Wow, that was some great stuff. Finally a metal band that doesn't scream, your guy can actually sing. I could definitely hear your influences in the music. It is a lot of the same stuff I grew up on and listened to. Really impressive.

Thanks again, everyone.

Bloodsong - you're right about living in Europe. We already figured that we'll do better there and in S America. But there are plenty of metal festivals and fans in the States - metal just isn't the "mainstream" anymore like the 80s - early 90s. And I kinda prefer it that way. Our ulitmate dream at this point is to play the Wacken Open Air Metal FEstival in Germany. I ain't holding my breath, but you never know.... ;)

lynch1 - As the singer, I say thanks. And I totally agree about the "screaming" (and "cookie monster" vocals) in metal. I've always been drawn to bands with great vocalists in a melodic, singing sense - Queensryche with Tate, Maiden with Bruce, Priest with Halford, Dio, etc.

Another-Drummer -- I have been amazed at the musical abilities of these guys. And not just in a playing sense, but also writing. Prog can often get bogged down in musical masturbation, but all of our songs are written with an eye toward hook and melody, not just technical flash. It's been a pleasure being involved.

313 -- we hope to have the fullo CD out by the end of the year. Rockpagers will be (at least among) the first to know when it's done.

We should have mastered versions of "The Call" (rough version on the myspace now) and "Prosperity?" in the coming weeks. I'll let ya know when those are up.
