Drummer get together ON at the studio the 13th
Hey guys,
I just got off the phone with Dave Villani and we can do the drum tuning clinic at his studio on July 13th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. For those of you who don't know where it is, it's in Altoona, right across the street from where you get your picture taken for your drivers license. It's called Data Music Services, on 19th st. and 9th Ave. It has maroon awnings on the front of the building and the entrance is at the door on the far left of the building. If you have a difficult drum to tune, bring it along and we'll see if we can't get it happening. If you just want to bring a tom along to try the techniques out on, feel free to do so. Everyone is welcome! Hope to see you there!
Clint
ITINERARY:
Introduction/background & sources
Knowing your drum's sound capabilities (i.e. wood types, depth of shell, etc.)
Head selection
Optimum tuning range (sweet spot)
The advantages of tuning using a pitch pipe
Getting the head in tune with itself
Relative head tension
Interval tuning
Tuning toms in musical intervals
Recording vs. live tuning
Q&A

Very cool Clint. I am looking forward to this !
Steve Brulia ask if he could bring someone new to drumming. I said "YES". Everyone is welcomed to come. This is not a club with memberships. It's an open discussion on all things related to drumming.
Tell anyone who is interested, to come along.
If you're in a band, tell your drummer to come and join us. He'll (She'll) have a good time.
Thanks Clint.

No problem man, I'm really looking forward to it. Now that I'm doing it in the studio, I can use the studio kit to demonstrate interval tuning between toms and not have to lug my gear in. I think the information exchanged that day will be awesome for ANY drummer who wants to sound better and become more knowledgeable about their instrument. I wish there would have been something like this when I was just starting out. It would have saved me alot of time and aggravation!
If you have any questions or concerns prior to the clinic, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll see you all there!
Oh, one more thing. Please don't let your ego get in the way of sharing in this experience. I'm just a regular guy and drummer like yourselves and by no means do I pretend to be the "all knowing guru of tuning". It's just that I have a ton of experience with this and a vast library of sources, both written and verbally communicated from professional drummers and drum techs from all walks of life. I can't imagine anyone being more obsessed with this topic than me for the past 25 years and I think you will agree at the end of the clinic that it was time well spent.
Anyway, enough of that....see you guys at the studio!

Yea Randy, ego? I mean really.....everyone knows I'm the best ever.....haha
Seriously though, I'm really glad that Clint is a part of this. Learning stuff is one thing, but learning stuff from a true professional and seasoned drummer like this is great! Tuning is one thing that is ofter overlooked by many of us, including myself, I'm getting excited! I'm waiting on you too Randy to have a clinic of your own! Can't wait for that either.

That's very kind of you Rob. What an awesome attitude! It's no wonder you are as great a player as you are!RobTheDrummer wrote:Yea Randy, ego? I mean really.....everyone knows I'm the best ever.....haha

I'm just glad that you guys are open to someone like me doing a "clinic". In some circles, it may sound pompous, like I'm some ego maniac who wants to assert his experience on everyone as the final authority on all things drumming. I assure you, that is not the case. I have been fortunate to have had a great career in drumming with alot of great opportunities in which I have learned a great deal. Being professional, being a good band mate, getting a good drum sound....etc. I am just in a position now to give away some of my "secrets" to getting a great sound and to share some knowledge with you all that you will sure to find beneficial. I know I did. I think knowing your instrument and knowing how to get a sound are part of being a complete drummer and of the utmost importance.
Hopefully after this clinic is over, you'll be chomping at the bit to get to your drums to play, record or do whatever it is you do to enhance the experience of being a drummer. That's really what it's all about for me, I love drums and drumming and being able to talk shop and help out other drummers is a dream come true for me. I can't wait!
That is what the Rockpage drummers get together has been about since it's inception ! You nailed it.CCdrums wrote:

I love being around the younger guys. I always learn something and I can't wait to go home and try it.

I'm looking forward to this as well. I appreciate you doing this, Clint.
I find the timing of this interesting. I am actually scheduled to record at Data Music on July 11th and 12th. Also, I'm considering using Dave's new Yamaha drum kit. It saves me from having to lug equipment and apparently they are already tuned!
I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone.

Interesting timing indeed! Dave's studio kit is nice and sounds really good. Although, I haven't tuned them in a while. They should be in the ballpark though, so I wouldn't hesitate to use them. You may want to bring in your own snare if you are used to its sound and feel, just in case you feel more at home on that drum. The last I saw the studio drums, the heads were in good shape and they still sounded good. Hopefully, they are still that way. That was about 6 weeks ago. At any rate, good luck, have fun and I'll see you the 13th.Another-Drummer wrote:I'm looking forward to this as well. I appreciate you doing this, Clint.

This has always been my favorite thing about clinics and drum nights. You go home wanting to play, and take what you learned with you. Kind of like a rejuvenation.CCdrums wrote: Hopefully after this clinic is over, you'll be chomping at the bit to get to your drums to play, record or do whatever it is you do to enhance the experience of being a drummer. Just for grins, check out this video by Gavin Harrison. He is one of the drummers who I've been in contact with about tuning drums. His kit sounds incredible and is extremely musical sounding as you will see. By the way, he tunes his drums the exact same way that I will be showing you on the 13th!

Hey Steve if you want to drive to Bald Eagle I will pick you up there and take you backnightcrawler_steve wrote:If anyone is going from the State College area and would be willing to pick me up, I would love to attend. Ill help with gas of course.

It would be great to see you again especially at a drum get together
Oh bye the way Hell of a nice new kit....Enjoy

Your never too young or too old to Rock n Roll
Just a thought...since there will be alot of valuable information given out at this upcoming clinic that probably will be alot to remember, those of you who are planning to attend may want to bring a notepad and pen or record the session to have it documented so you can refer to it if need be. I'm going to ask Dave to video record it so there will be a copy in case someone wants one.
Can someone hook this brother up? I'd do it myself, but I don't think I can make it work and be able to get to the clinic on time. Anyone?nightcrawler_steve wrote:That is very generous of you to offer and thank you! Unfortunately, I would still need a ride to Bald Eagle because I am currently without a car.generationgap wrote:Hey Steve if you want to drive to Bald Eagle I will pick you up there and take you backnightcrawler_steve wrote:If anyone is going from the State College area and would be willing to pick me up, I would love to attend.
