The Dark Side of Flame Sky

Post by Gallowglass »

As a few of you knew Ed, Nate, and I (Shawn had to work) went to Boulder CO, for 40th Parallel Productions Dark Side of the Moon event. The event consisted of a group of 14 musicians performing the entire album live to a prerecorded laser lightshow. Despite some equipment concerns (we performed entirely on rented & borrowed gear except for Ed's Telecaster...Thanks, Liza) and a few tensions here and there, the show went awesomely and we received a 5 minute standing ovation.

The first day's rehearsal was quite interesting because we had to figure out how the 14 musicians (some of whom couldn't even make the first rehearsal) were going to change in and out of the songs without interrupting or stopping the music. The second day was a little smoother & that night, it was showtime!

I really have to hand it to Nate, who had to perform the entire album due to the second drummer breaking his wrist the night before. Because of the sequencing with the laser show we had to be within seconds of the album or everything would be off. When the last note sounded, we were one second off from the timing of the recording. I really don't know how he did it, but I thought that was pretty amazing.

We met & performed with some really amazing people including Bill Nershi from String Cheese Incident and national recording artist Liza Oxnard, who killed us all with her performance during "Great Big Gig in the Sky". Some of the other people you might know were the Fatman from Lockhaven and Drew Campbell. I really enjoyed jamming with Drew on "Any Colour You Like". I also played "Breathe/Time/Breathe" (I really came to appreciate what a beautiful solo Gilmor played on "Time") and "Eclipse". Ed played on "Breathe/Time/Breathe", "Brain Damage" & "Eclipse".

None of us had really ever done anything like this before and I have to hand it to everyone involved. Everyone we met was very professional and extremely talented, aside from being a genuinely wonderful person. The event was filmed in HD by the same guy who does all of Barack Obama's commercials, so hopefully I'll have a copy soon if he's not too busy.

Please forgive me for rambling (I'm still a bit jetlagged), I just thought some of you might find it cool.

I will definitely let you know, JP. The same folks have invited us to play a festival in September called the Tatonka Festival and are currently in negotiations with Trey Anastasio and the reunited Return To Forever. The same guy is supposed to film it. I'm pretty stoked (RTF!!!).

Glad to have you back here, I knew you couldn't take too much of all those Boulder, Co. hippies. :)

I wish I was there, can't wait to see the dvd or hear the cd.

Jason was telling me of the great live music scene out there. Even with the no smoking in the bars law. I just wish this area was not falling apart a a live music area.

Thanks, guys. Here's a link that was run in the Boulder Daily Camera before the event. It mentions some of the details that I didn't write about like the after party jam (which was really cool). Even though the paper says 18 musicians were slated to perform, only 14 of us actually performed . There was a lot of media at the event, so I'll try to find something that was actually written after it happened.

Jason,

I'd love a copy of the DVD. DSOTM is my all time favorite album. I wish I had known earlier. I probably could have gone out to see it. Maybe next time.

Rock On!

Wow. I'd love to check that out when you have a DVD of it.

I've always wanted to do stuff like this but I can never fine the people or the means to do it. I can only imagine that it was an awesome time.

Thanks, again guys. I'm sure it will be a little while before I know anything about the DVD, but I will keep you posted.

@ 4:33, I jokingly suggested that we should do the album in conjunction with The Wizard of Oz, the only difficulty would be that we'd have to play the album 3 1/2 times to cover the duration of the movie. We'd also have to make sure we started exactly at the MGM lion's 3rd roar. Nobody really seemed interested.
