Best female vocalists of all time

Post by CCdrums »

OK, I was inspired to start this thread after listening to some great female vocals. Some of my all time favorites:
Cass Elliot (Mama Cass from The Mamas and the Papas) Her shimmering crystal clear voice on songs like "Monday, Monday" and "I saw her again last night" are just incredible IMO.
Ann Wilson of Heart.....'nuff said.
Janis Joplin her raw power and soulful bluesy vocals are legendary.
Billie Holiday great jazz vocalist, incredible emotion in her voice.
Linda Ronstadt powerful and clean, she was a great folky rock vocalist.
Anne Murray Canada's finest, she has a smooth easy to listen to style.

Those are just a few....what say you?? (Hey that rhymes!)

Tori Amos
Sandy Denny (Fairport Convention)
Grace Slick (although I've heard her sound REAL bad too)
Amy Winehouse (flame on, I don't care...I think she has a great voice, except on that youtube performance someone posted, that was sad)

All the ones CCDrums said except Ronstadt and Anne Murray, can't take them, but thats just me....

I don't understand why anytime someone praises a country artist, song, etc., it has to be given a disclaimer like country is somehow an inferior form of music. Growing up with a father who played in country bands and cutting my teeth on country, I can tell you that it takes just as much talent and artistry to pull off as anything else. Some of the best musicians in the world are Nashville session cats. I know a lot of country musicians who would take many of the self-important rock musicians to school, and even then, they'd still have to stay after class for credit just to pass.

Sorry for the rant. I just see those type of posts here all of the time, and it annoys me. :D ;)

Patty Smythe. She can peel the paint off the walls.
Bonnie Rait
Maybe not the best of all time, but Brody Dalle from the Distillers has a pretty amazing set of pipes
Joan Jett! Not very desirable as a songwriter, but her voice can't be denied.
Chrissy Hynde from the Pretenders has a rawness and a matteroffactness in her voice that puts her at the top of my list.
Patsy Cline. I fall to pieces when I hear her.

Here are some of my favorite female singers

- Ann Wilson (Nancy's pretty good too)
- Pat Benatar
- Annie Lennox
- Alannah Myles - she had lots of hits in Canada but we know her from her huge hit, Black Velvet
- Pam Bradley, Sandy Caulfield, and Barb Erber from the Chicago based band in the late 70's and early 80's called Tantrum that had 3 female singers who were all great.
- Carly Simon
- The Supremes
- Joyce Kennedy from Mother's Finest

Have to go with Janis, Aretha, and Ann Wilson too.

Id like to add Whitney, Joan Osbourne, and Clay Aiken.

Agreed on that one! I thought I was the only Distillers fan on this board...lol!
Tori Amos
Patsy Cline
Billie Holiday
Sade
Jennifer Hudson *melts*
Sarah McLachlan
Lauryn Hill
Natalie Merchant
I have to add my friend Jess to this list too since she's -hands down- the BEST female metal singer I've ever heard (she could kick a few guy's butts at it too!)
Worth dying for. Worth killing for. Worth going to hell for. Amen.

For one of the purest sounding voices, you can't beat Karen Carpenter.

Darby Mills from The Headpins has a great raspy, rock voice.

Annie "Holly" Woods from the 70's & 80's band, Toronto was really good.

A few newer country singers who can belt it out are Faith Hill and Carrie Underwood

Doro Pesch - metal to the bone, not to mention hot as sin

Pat Benatar rules the female singer world, imo

Not the "best singer", but something about Jewel's voice makes me wanna... well... you know.....

Grace Slick - the power in White Rabbit is all about her......

I agree with all. I can't believe that no one said Barbara Streisand. I could listen to her for hours. Her voice and Bono's voice are two that are un matchable.

I agree with Paul. You will find more country performers that have more talent in their little finger than you will find rock performers who have in their whole body.

Along with so many already listed that I won't repeat, I have to add Christina Aguilerra (spelling?), Corinne Bailey Rae, Adrienne Young and Norah Jones. I believe I read somewhere Norah's first cd was recorded as a demo and left as it was. That was SOME demo! :)

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Stevie Nicks or Belinda Carlisle.

I agree with the Patsy Cline mention as well.

Bessie Smith- I love Those delta blues style female vocals.
