3 Doors Down, SEETHER, Octane Show...

Post by JayBird »

We'll last night was a great night for area music. IUP played host to three great bands - Octane(from Philly), SEETHER, and 3 Doors Down. My main reason for going was to see SEETHER, but I must give props to Octane and of course 3DD. I was impressed by 3DD and their crowd appreciation. Thank you after thank you, guitar pics everywhere, handing out of drum sticks...they just gave back so much to the crowd. Being two rows back is a bonus...I was lucky enought to get a pic while my friend caught a sweatband from 3DD guitar player.

SEETHER played a mellow accoustic set. I must say I was bumbed about this because I was wanting to rock. All in all they still did one hell of a job. And if you didn't know...their new drummer is a PENNSYLVANIA BOY! Kevin Soffera is living the dream of a lifetime. It was neat to see the ties between a few local cover bands and a now growing rockstar. I'm talking about his connection to Rob of Bad Daze and Kevin from SEETHER. I was lucky enough to get the inside scoop about Rob's friend Kevin month's ago when Kevin landed the job with SEETHER. It was nice to actually get to meet the guy I heard so much about. By the way Rob...Kevin Says, "Hi". We had some small talk about your old band FEIGHT and the new band BAD DAZE. It was a nice experience!

The openers, OCTANE have the edgier heavier grooves and didn't dissapoint the crowd. From what I understand they are sponsored by the "Budweiser True Music" and just released their first national record. I highly recommend picking the album up. The whole night was one for the record books. Bands hanging out with fans signing autographs and getting pics taking out the wazoo. This was a night of giving back to everyone that has made them who they are. These guys all have my respect...thank you!

Hey Jay, I'm glad to hear you got to meet Kev...yes, I'm proud to say Kev and I are close personal buds...lol...no shit. I met Kev about five years ago when he was with LiQuid A out of Wilkes-Barre and we struck up an instant rapport. We've kept in constant touch over the years, we've jammed together on the same stage numerous times, and he was a big inspiration to me to follow my personal dreams where music is concerned. I couldn't have been happier when he dropped me an email back in March with the news of his new gig with Seether. I called him that day as the movers were collecting his gear and we talked for a few...it was pretty unreal. My bud movin' up to the big leagues.

Honestly, I've made a lot of friends and met a lot of cool people in this scene over the years, and this couldn't have happened to a more deserving and hard working guy.

By the way, if you don't have "Disclaimer," Seether's debut release, pick it up...it friggin' rocks!!!

I saw another excellent concert last night (Tues.), in the opposite direction from IUP. Yes keyboard man Rick Wakeman (one of the gods of rock keyboard, in my opinion) put on an excellent solo performance at the Whitaker Center in downtown Harrisburg. He did some Yes material, lots of compositions from his solo albums, even some classical and Beatles remakes. In between music, he told stories from his career (most of them were funny stories, like when he tried to smuggle a KGB uniform and admiral's jacket out of the USSR during a tour). Rick also did a meet-and-greet after the show and signed autographs for everyone who wanted one.

The Whitaker Center is a great place to view a show. It's a theater venue that holds around 700, but gives you that one-on-one atmosphere with the performer. I might be headed back there on Nov. 13 to see Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull!
