xp w/IE6 connection status

Post by onetooloud »

I haven't been able to find an answer to the question below . I've searched microsofts support site several times. I'm not saying its not there just tired of looking.

If I open up the connection status window (xp IE 6 ) at least thats what I'm calling it , (the place where you can see the transfer of information between computors and the speed) I'll see errors listed somtimes many.

These errors are incoming. Some sites are worst then others. What exactly is this telling me?

Its hard to tell without seeing the errors, but you might want to update to IE7 and get all the security patches. If everything is working OK despite the errors, chances are they are just security warnings.

These don't have any number associated with them it simply says.

Errors followed by the amount of incoming errors under the received protion of the activity show. Sometimes I've seen up to 60-70 errors. Theres no error number with them just errors.

Usually eveything rolls right along but where the error count is hi problems sometimes occur.

yeah i would try to upgrade to IE7 and try to delete you cookies and old internet history by going to your control panel and clicking on internet options to delete all things that are stored by the internet.. if that still doesnt work id suggest using mozilla firefox as your browser

I recommend Firefox to begin with... But yeah, you probably should delete temp files, delete cookies, upgrade IE, etc.

I would guess that they are just dropped UDP packets. They are used to transmit non-critical data such as streaming A/V. TCP packets are used for more important data, such as file transfers and control data. TCP packets are retransmitted if a packet is lost, but UDP packets just drop. A network interface will purposely drop UDP packets if it is seeing a lot of retransmitted TCP packets. This is normal stuff and dependent on the network connection and type of data coming from the host. YouTube may show a bunch of errors because the data is primarily UDP, while a secure bank site may show zero because it is almost all TCP.
... and then the wheel fell off.

Ron that seems like what I've seen. Its not really anything I'm super concerned about. I just couldn't find out what that was telling me.

Time to upgrade no doubt. I just don't care to jump on the upgrade bandwagon all the time. There have been times when I have perfered the older versions of differing software.

Well how old I've gotten so used to using win 98 that I refuse to totally give it up. Some day I'll have to just not yet. Where I need Xp or such I use it as my machine is set up daul boot.

I feel that fewer people are going to write viruses for the older operating systems. If this is the case wouldn't it be more unlikley to be infected with a virus or such.
