Drum Count Question For Drummers
Could you all help me out and let me know:
1. If you use two bass drums live (not ghost-pedal)
2. How many rack toms you use live
3. How many floor toms you use live
4. How many cymbals, minus hi-hats you use live.
5. Any special percussion you use live that needs a mic.
I may end up having some good Audix or EV tom mics for sale after this...

Thanks for the reply Riksylvania. I assume your kit consists of 1 bass drum, 1 snare drum, 1 rack tom and 1 floor tom. In that case, I would use a different microphone on each piece. That's why I need details--I'm trying to figure how many and what mics I need for most situations.

LoneWolf,
Most of the drummers that I've seen in the area including myself, use a standard 5 piece kit, using 1 kick drum, snare, 2 rack toms and a floor tom. A lot of guys are using 4 piece kits with only 1 rack tom.
For my rock setup, I use the following:
5 piece kit:
18"x 22" kick drum
12" x 12" rack tom
13" x 13" rack tom
16" x 16" floor tom
6.5" x 14" snare
I use 3 crash cymbals, 1 ride, 1 china, and 1 china splash.
Hope that helps!

if it helps
My set up is:
1 bass Drum 22"
1 mount tom 13"
2 floor toms 16" & 18" (bass type mics work best for big floor toms)
2 snare drums 13"(main) 14" by the hi hat
Ride
Hi-hat
3 crashes 14/17/18"
1 splash
1 swish aka. china
2 zil bels 6/10"
3 cowbels
The type of music i play currently is Indie/Alt. Rock. But i got the setup config from playing swing and blues.
I use the Shure kit, it has:
3 sm 57's great for the snares and mount toms
1 Beta 52 great for a good solid live thump in the bass drum especially the closer to the beater you get it.
These all came as a kit and had mounts too.
1 audio technica bass freg. mic for the 18" floor
Still need to get one more mic for my other floor tom.
Let me know if you end up with any extra mics you might want to part with.
Any questions about micing i'd be glad to help.

My kit consists of your basic five piece with two extra toms on the left. I use a single bass drum with a double kick pedal. Two bass drums are a little bit too much for the small rooms around here, but I've seen them. I have about 12 cymbals minus hi-hats, but cymbals don't get miked too often. I would suggest (if you want to be professional) to have 2 bass drum mics just incase, a good snare and hat mic, four tom mikes and two overheads. That's if you want to be able to do the avearage show and do a professional job. Some of it seems excessive, but you are a pro! Most of the time, the top bands have thier own sound guys that work everything for them. But hey, you gotta start somewhere!
Ahhh the Old days
I have to Agree with Bobbie from the canes I have a Sonorlite yellow Drumset with (2) 22' bass drums (4) rack toms (2) Floor toms and a Deep VERY HEAVY snare Drum I've cut my set WAY BACK in Fact I DON'T even use the Yellow Kit any more, it is all housed in flight cases, I have the Title of having the most Mics On a Drumset at Data Music services, If you would like to see Pictures here's my web site address
Http://hometown.aol.com/maknmymove
just click on the pictures and you can see the Cymbal set up and the drumset up I used to use, I don't even want to go thru the hassle of setting the whole set up let alone try to use it for a show.

Mark, how many sets does it take to hit all those cymbals?
I'm not really trying to add mics, I'm trying to figure out what to sell. Here's my INSTRUMENT mic list:
1 Electrovoice ND868 BD mic (sold all of my SM91As--too much hassle and too delicate)
1 Electrovoice ND168 SD mic
3 Electrovoice ND408 tom/instrument mics
5 Audix D1 SD & tom mics
4 Audiotechnica ATM11R cymbal/instrument condensers
4 Neumann KM84 instrument condensers (they're not allowed outside)
I was thinking of selling some Audix and buying 2-3 EV ND468 and maybe another ND868. Opinions????????????

I am thinking of getting my kit mic'd..I am a pretty heavy hitter, and use Zildjian dipped rock sticks and pinstripe heads, so I get plenty of volume for most of our little venues around Bedford County, but I want to get in the mix. I lug around a 7 pc Tama kit w/DW delta accelerator double pedals, Pearl Eric Singer snare (LOUD), and 8 cymbals+hihat. I also use an Alesis DM5 and 4 pads mounted on a Gibralter side rack connected to the main mixer. I figure I would need 9 mics, including the overhead condensors. Is there a mixer made specifically for drums that I can plug all the mics and the Alesis into, and then connect it to just one channel of the main board, or would any 10 channel mixer do the job
And which of the reasonably priced mics sound good..I don't want to spend alot, but I don't want to sound like shit. And, can someone teach me how to play??

Mark, Alesis makes a nice 3-space rack mixer with 8 phantom powered mic inputs and two stereo inputs for a total of 12 inputs. You could rack it up in a 4 space shallow rack with the DM5.

We need to set up a date to get together and talk drums and stuff. That would be cool. All we need is a place and time and all that good stuff. We can share ideas and technique. It would be very interesting. I have some cool vids of Virgil Donati. He's just wicked! We could also talk about rudiments and such...anything would be cool, and anyone would be invited.
