Looking for a tuner for bass and sometimes acoustic guitar. I have a Boss TU-6 that doesn't do a very good job, its kinda old. I also have a Fender stomp type box that does a decent job but I'm looking for something better.
Any Ideas?

I got a cheap black clip-on tuner at the Emporium that works great... it's brand-name is Pamlico (no, I never heard of it either) and unlike the familiar Bare Bone clip-on that everybody in bluegrass uses, it works perfectly for me everytime, on guitar, dobro, bass, mandolin, and lap steel. I've also seen it badged with the Eleca name. Try it out, it's under $22.00.
I have a Boss TU-12H that's been tortured and abused for over 20 years, man I wish all gear was that tough. It was $90 back then, but it's been worth it obviously.
I've pretty much tried every non-rack tuner that comes out. The Fender pedal tuner is good and tough as hell, the Fender Sparkle tuner works great, and is cheap. The Sabine stick-on jobs are cool, but some don't pick up well, others do fine. The Planet Waves stuff sells pretty well, too.
Really, even the cheap ones are better than they used to be, and there's lots of choices.------->JMS

My father told me that when personal electronic tuners came out, they were about $400. The first guy he knew who had one was a steel guitarist he played with.
Anyways, I've been using a Korg DTR1000 for about two and a half years now, and next to my pre and power amps, it's the most important thing hanging in my rack. I honestly don't know how I ever played without it. Even a quality instrument is susceptible to minor flucuations in tuning during a set, especially in the crazified climates we have here in PA. When I came back up for the second set on Saturday, my bass was actually sharp. At $180 brand new, the DTR1000 isn't cheap in the world of tuners, but it's definitely work the extra couple of dollars. Best of all, it's completely trasparent and won't add any noise to your signal. The DTR2000 has a lot of bells and whistles that I wouldn't use, but it could probably be pretty useful for a guitarist or any other stringed instrumentalist.
I do have two compliants: 1.) The B string sometimes tracks very slowly in noisy environments. 2.) There is no front-panel output, which is, IMO, a huge advantage that Sabian has over Korg with rack tuners. I plug my bass directly into the input of the Korg and then run the tuner's output directly into the input of my preamp. That way when I mute, I'm quiet through both my rig and through the FOH. I have to run patch cable from the back of the tuner, up under my power amp, into the input of my preamp. It's not a big deal if you have some room in the bottom of your rack, but if not, you'd have to take the cable out everytime you put the panels on, and run the cable from the side when you use it.
For handheld tuners, I've been using a Korg CA-40 and it's a very handy and portable unit.

Korg makes all kind of good tuners and I would recommend any of them for their intended uses.
You need to decide whether you want a stompbox tuner, an amptop tuner or a rack tuner. Also, if your acoustic doesn't have a pickup, you need to get a tuner with a microphone. Once you know what format you want, it narrows down your choices a lot. If you don't already have a rack, there is very little point in getting a bigass rack tuner when you can get a similar Korg amptop with a mic for $100 less.

Go straight into it, then from it into my Ernie Ball volume pedal. Can cut volume and tune.
As Paul said, with our climate and going from a warm house, to a freezing cold, then into
a warm venue, then with all the temp/humidity fluctuations in a night, staying in tune can
be a hassle.
Couple of weeks ago I was having ALL kinds of trouble staying in tune one night. The
next no problem at all.

I've had a Boss TU-2 for quite a while now. I always have it on my pedalboard right before my delay pedals. That way I can hit the delay, make something happen and then tune while there's still something going on. Sometimes it's just the decay of the delay, sometimes it's a loop of whatever I was last playing. We're not big on silence during our sets, so this really helps.
I like the idea of a clip on tuner for my acoustic, I didn't know they existed till now.
I will check out the Korg tuners for my bass. I have a Fender tuner I use, but sometimes it just won't tune the E string on the bass.
As far as tuna goes, yeah Chicken of the Sea packed in water rules.
Thanks guys

I got the rack mount for christmas and have "0" complaints. I also dig the "Knight Rider" LED's.onegunguitar wrote:I use the Fender PT100 (stomp box) with the note read out, works fantastic, picks up our "A" tuned shit quick and, it is accurate.

I like the PT100, too. Those things are tanks, and they read very well. For those of you who are gadget-heads like me, Music Emporium got the little Qwik-Tune deals with the chord computer onboard... okay, not the most pro gear, but it works, and it's a little over $15.
