Devo Rocked!

As part of a work trip I took this week (Macworld 2008) I got to see Devo at the Warfield in San Francisco. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't excited to see them when I heard earlier that day they were the musical guest. However, I was fairly impressed. They played about a 90 minute set of mostly original material and a handful of covers. They had a surprising fan base and many people were WAY into it. Into it so much, they too were donning the trademark Devo domes on their heads.

I was especially impressed with their drummer and specifically, his sound. His cymbal sound was amazing! I didn't recognize him, of course, but when I looked up their Wikipedia entry later in the week, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was Josh Freese. Josh has worked with a TON of better known bands, like A Perfect Circle and many others. It kind of aggravates me that I didn't go to the after party with the band I was offered a ticket to. It would have been nice to talk shop with such an accomplished drummer for a few minutes.

Devo's an awesome band. AND, ya, frikkin Josh Freese is unbelievable. He's toured
with Sting, I think Smashing Pumpkins, and a ton of other people. One of the only
session/sideman/studio guys "most" people have heard of.

Josh Freese is awesome. I used to have some video of him with the vandals. I hate that he played with Axl Rose though.

DEVO was one of the most underrated synth bands of the 80s as far as I'm concerned.

Their first drummer's name eludes me as he was only with the group in their developmental stages. Then they has Alan Myers take over the job for most of the band's career.

Mark Mothersbaugh (lead singer/synths) has gone on to produce films and film scores much like Danny Elfman from Oingo Boingo.

Gerald V. Casale (bass) has done the same. Check out some early Foo Fighters videos and you'll find that Gerald V. was the producer/director.

IMO, this band was ahead of their time. Judging from the current fan base and interest, they only now might be slightly appreciated for what they've done.

They've always been one of my favorites.
