National Recording Acts

Post by facingwest »

With so many bands on this forum, I wanted to see what national recording acts everyone has opened for. I'm sure everyone has some good stories as well. ;)

In '94, Night Wing opened for Dangerous Toys at Sabs. The guys were really cool in the band, however, since I wasn't 21, I couldn't stay in the bar to see their entire show. What I did catch of it was awsome.

In '93, the same band played Sizzle Jam, a battle of the bands, in Windber. The winning band (I believe it was Nixon Pit Crew) was supposed to open for Night Ranger, but because of running over in time, they didn't. We were the last band to go on, so I don't know if you'd consider that opening for them or not. That was one of the funnest experiences I had simply for the fact that you got to hang out and party with musicians all day. Definitely a day I'll never forget.

Just one on my resume: Warrant at Sab's. Lots of neat stuff happened at that show, like crowd surfing during our set. A personal highlight was during setup. I was playing a PRS at the time, and one of the Warrant guys (Erik Turner?) was playing all PRS stuff. His guitar tech wanted to check mine out, and in exchange let me jam on all of his guy's guitars!

Another notable point was that I never actually got to see Warrant. They didn't show up until 30 seconds before their set, and by that time I was way at the back of the crowd. And as you may know, I'm not the tallest guy in the world. :D So I spent Warrant's set BSing about professional wrestling with a guy from the other opening band!

The other Hair Force One guitarist, Michael J. Cox, has opened for Quiet Riot. I got to spend that show right on the front monitors, which was cool. Except for being dangerously close to Kevin DuBrow's package, of course.

I got to open a few... Thin Ice opened Dirty Looks (like a lot of bands did at that time) and the bass player tried to pick up my wife while I was standing there with her (Jack Pyers, I haven't forgotten ,you putz!). In addition, they sucked...really bad AC/DC ripoff, and the singer was so wasted he wasn't sure he was even onstage.
On the other hand, we opened Foghat at Carlsbad Tavern in '90, which was awesome. We absolutely slayed that night... one of those rare combinations when you need to hit the mark, and do so in spades. Their drummer took me aside after the show and said, "You can't open for us anymore." I was devastated. "Why?" "How the fook do you expect a bunch of old men to follow something that good? We had to play our asses off!" I've never been prouder. I used to sit and listen to their live album, and look at the live photos inside the cover, and wish it was me. Too cool.
We also opened Savoy Brown (English blues rock band that actually gave birth to Foghat) at Swizzle's in York. Their guitarist, Kim Simmonds, was flat-out awe-inspiring. They played a slow blues, and I managed to tear myself away from what was happening onstage, and looked at the guys in my band and some friends we brought with us. I swear to you as I stand here today... we ALL had tears in our eyes. Not one lyric had been sung, just a beautiful, haunting series of notes on a Les Paul Black Beauty. It changed me. I then fully understood how profoundly someone could express themselves on guitar. Our set was average at best, but I still came away with the best feeling ever.
We also did an opener with minor hairband Heaven's Edge, with Reggie Wu in guitar. He was great, they were all very nice guys, but I wasn't into the choreographed dance moves they did. Thier vocals were good, and the band's work ethic was top-notch (only band other than mine I ever heard actually rehearsing vocal harmonies in the dressing room).
Oh yeah, there was a shot with a nobody band from Philly named Von Damien at the Empire Rock Room in Philly. That band was forgettable, but I met the guys in Cinderella right before they broke national, as well as Punky Meadows from the 70's band Angel (and also Giuffria, I think), and Tommy Conwell.
Boy does this thread take me back to the glory days. I told BadDazeRob not long ago that everybody should play in a rock and roll band for at least a little while. I'm sure you all know what I mean. --->JMS

We got to open for The Jeff Healy band in a club in Hershey, Never got to meet him though. and the club owner stiffed us, The crowd was awesome tho, I think that's what I remember most that incredible sea of people, in the dark, cheering and holding up our T-shirts and shouting "Vin-Nee, Vin-Nee", (a thing like that can make a guys night)

We got to play in a jam sesson with Reggie Wayne Morris, who's on the Alligator label, Nice guy. and of course I got to meet B.B. King in Harrisburg, a nicer, kinder genteleman I have never met.

It's too bad no one can figure a way to bring even b-level acts into Altoona, so more of us can have stories like that.

This year Never the Sunshine opened up for Endo (Columbia) who were on Ozzfest this summer. And we opened for Speedloader (Arc Light) this summer too. We opened fro some other smaller national acts. And a few years ago we opened for Overkill, Shank-456, and some other Roadrunner bands. Always fun to meet this people and get their ideas and POV's on stuff...

I was on the road with a band out of Dallas, Tx in 1984 called "Trick". We opened a really cool club called the Hungry Bear in Albuquerque, New Mexico and one of the nights we played (it was a week long gig) we opened for James Cotton. I also got to meet Heart there.
A few years later we played at Madame Wong's West in West Hollywood and opened for, believe it or not, The Bay City Rollers! (You younger folks probably won't even know who that is!) Here's a link to the ad if you're interested:
http://www.tracemoranband.com/tb_01.htm
It was kinda sad, really. They were pretty bad and they wouldn't get off stage. I ended up throwing a drink a their (very drunk) manager's head yelling "Get those F**kin' hasbeens off my stage!
Alas, Madame Wong's West has since burned down and God knows whatever happened to the Rollers - but it was a hoot!

Over the years, The Grimm has had a FANTASTIC time hitting the road and opening for a variety of national (and international) acts! Of all our adventures, I'd have to say that the most memorable shows would have been on the 1999 Kenny Rogers/Grimm tour. Kenny bucked his record label and management by signing us up (we hadn't even finished recording our first CD yet) and, contrary to any kind of common sense we were on our first national tour!

We were scared to death that Kenny's core audience of country music fans wouldn't accept us, but by the end of our first show, we had everyone in the crowd, from teenagers to 85-year old women, singing along to "suk-a-pon"! Kenny was so pleased with the way that the country music crowd accepted us that he often joined us on stage for improv versions of classic songs! I'll never forget the Kenny/Grimm versions of "Cotton Eye Joe" or "What's Up Pussycat"...those moments were....magic! By the second leg of the tour, Kenny had fired his backing band to have Otto, Ron, and I back him for the entire set! After the tour wrapped in December 1999, we talked about collaborating for a prog-metal/bluegrass fusion concept album, but other priorities just got in the way (although you can call us anytime Kenny! We're ready!).

To this day, we still get free fried chicken at any Kenny Roger's restaurant in the country! As they say, you gotta know when to fold em.....

This little trip down memory lane has reminded me of some great moments in Grimm history that I'd nearly forgotten! A few months after we wound down the Kenny Rogers/Grimm tour, we finally released our debut CD! Much to our surprise, a new friend of ours dropped by to help us celebrate the occasion....none other than Dolly Parton! We met Dolly backstage at the Grand Ole Opry and discovered a lot of common interests (did you know that she's a HUGE Tool fan?). Dolly hung out for the whole show and joined Bob on stage at Peter C's for tear-jerking renditions of "Islands in the Stream," "I Will Always Love You," and "South of Heaven." Nary was a dry eye in the house to be certain! And man, was Dolly fun to hang out with ...she kept up with the Grimm boys shot for shot (the lady knows her Tennessee whisky, friends)! Rumor has it that Dolly may do a cameo on the next Grimm CD... but don't believe everything you read!

Oh yeah, Kenny's BIG into body art! He's got a big one on his back that says "you picked a fine time to leave me Lucille"! We can't wait to party with him again!

photoshop is photo editing software for a computer. You can do all kinds of cool stuff with your pics. You can scan in a pic of your band and when you open photoshop, you can do numerous things to your pic. I took a picture of Retroactive and made us look like we were drawn in pencil, painted with water colors, embrossed in metal. All kinds of neat stuff as you can see with what The Grimm guys did. You can cut out pictures with precision and paste them together. Retroactive got one of our first pix done at the Altoona Mall. We scanned it in and ran it through photoshop to make us look like we were drawn in pencil. We ended up using it for our t-shirts.
