I have been wanting to get this mod done to my Boss Metal Zone now for a long time. This guy named Robert Keeley does them. Has anyone ever had a pedal that was modded by him? If so, was it as good as everyone says?

He sells brand new modded pedals, and you can also send your's to him to get modded with a 10 day turn around.

I love the sound of the MT-2, but the high end is way too buzzy sounding, and I always thought it needed more gain also.

He does all kinds of pedals like the TS808 and the TS-9 as well.

Looks like it is worth checking out for sure.

I love the sound of the MT-2, but the high end is way too buzzy sounding, and I always thought it needed more gain also.

What does the Keeley mod do? Does it roll off the presence to get rid of the fizzy, buzzy top-end on the Metal Zone? More gain? I like the gain, actually, but that buzzy stuff turns me off big-time. I used to work with a guitarist in a metal band who put his guitar into a nasty Boss Rocker distortion (actually an okay unit that would have done the job nicely by itself... it had a rocking pedal like a wah that you varied the gain and/or volume with) then into a Roland multi-effects floor unit (a cheap one from back when they sucked) for more buzz, then into a very nice 50W Marshall half-stack. What came out was a shapeless blob of noise that sort of sounded like how cotton balls taste. No note definition... which was thankful considering his lead guitar skills. He played rhythm mostly anyway, so it worked for him. We rolled of his presence in the PA, and got by, but damn, I hated that sound onstage. No matter how tight a player you are, it still makes you sound sloppy.
Lord knows, the Metal Zone is a popular pedal. We have one on the display board at the Emporium, and it gets more use than any other pedal in the rack. We sell jillions of 'em, too, mostly to the under-18 crowd. We could get away with just selling those and the DOD Grunge, I think. Don't get me wrong, I like the Metal Zone, but ya gotta roll off that bacon-sizzle for my old ears. Give me a Boss Blues Driver, OD-1, ProCo Rat, or my all-time favorite, the Arion Tube-Mania from the 80's (closest to real tubes I've ever had). This modern stuff is just so... modern. --->JMS

I know that Travis, when he was playing in Gin n' Juice/Plazma, was telling me that he was sending in one of his pedals (I believe a wah) to have it modded for true-bypass. I don't know if it was the same guy that you're talking about.

Sound clips for all three modes supplied by Jason Meyers. This was one continuous clip that we broke up. Yep, that's right! ALL THREE CLIPS ARE AT THE SAME SETTINGS! The only thing different is the position of the switch! We recommend a pair of headphones to get the full effect.

* Complete Hi-fidelity upgrade! Nothing like a heavy distoriton channel that is produced well!

--> It's hard to improve a hammer, right? Well, that is what we were faced with. The MT-2 is like a hammer, so we had to work on details. What seperates great metal bands from bland ones? Sometimes it's the fact that the production and sound quality are awesome! That is what we wanted. We wanted a metal pedal that had an Aural exciter built in. We wanted that "metal tone to die for" in a box!

* Increased fidelity leads to better bass response and less harsh upper high-frequency. Translation: Bass that punches below the belt!

--> Using our Boss schematic we were able to find every harsh sounding cap and replace it with audiophile grade parts that let the midrange sparkle and breathe. --> The Toggle switch gives you three different distortion types. Couldn't talk Soldano out of using tubes right?!?! So what we did was create two different tube amp characteristics and make them available through a toggle switch. the high end on my Metal Zone is at about a 1 'o clock position.
I cannot stand the high end at all.
The best feature is the Parametric mids, which there are only 1 or 2 other pedals that I know of that has that.
One of which is the Uber Metal Pedal. Charltor has one of those and I really like the sound of it.

I tried alot of pedals and the MT-2 is about the best sounding one for what I want to do. It just needs more gain, the high end I've dealt with so far.

Robert Keeley has a good reputation for his mods, I was just wondering if anyone had one of his pedals?

For $150.00 it better be good.

Dax from HF1/Lies Inc has a Keeley TS-9 in his rig. It has a more open, transparent sound than a stock one. It's not a huge difference, but noticeable to a tweaker's ear. I'd like to pick up one of the DS-1 mods.
