They have number one right, and a few others are very deserving but, Kirk Hammet, Tom Morello, and Kim Thayil??? The fact that these people are listed and guys like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde are all left off makes me wonder what the criteria for a "great" rolling stone guitarist is...BTW, Jerry Cantrell is more deserving than Kim Thayil if they are wanting to recognize more grunge...In my mind anyways

I forgot to add, Kirk Hammet never even wrote a song for Metallica until the Black album. Hell, on the first album most of the solos he played were written by Dave Mustaine. And without Joe Satriani teaching him, Kirk Hammet wouldn't have been shit....I can't believe he's number 11....

The fact that Michael Schenker isn't even on the list immediately qualifies it as a farce, in my opinion. Kurt Cobain #12
Johnny Ramone #16
I could agree with those two only if the list was for influential guitarists, but not best guitarist. Hell even I can play any song Johnny Ramone ever did. One last comment - is #43 a typo?? I think that should be JOHN Hazel of Nitro, not Eddie of P-Funk.

Not to mention that he rarely, if ever, plays rhythm guitar on their records. Since there are VERY few ripping metal lead players on that list, you have to think they put him at #11 mainly on the basis of Metallica's pulverizing rhythms. So it's even more of a farce. If they put Hetfield/Hammett as a team at #11, I'd buy it.Punkinhead wrote:I forgot to add, Kirk Hammet never even wrote a song for Metallica until the Black album. Same deal for Angus Young . . . gotta give Malcolm his due!
Given some of the other guys who made the list, it's surprising that punkers like Steve Jones, Mick Jones, and Bob Mould missed the cut. Gimme them over D. "$5 Tone" Boon any day. Or East Bay Ray from Dead Kennedys. He ruled ass.
And where the !#@& is C.C. DeVille??

I'm just wondering who's opinion it was for all the guitar players picked and how did they come up with the order? I see a lot of good players, but I also see a lot of great players, that influenced a lot of people, missing from that list. There are also players on there that I honestly don't get why they're even mentioned.

By the way, Where's Al DiMeola, Pat Methany, John McLaughlin, or John Scofield. They are some great jazz guitarist that are probably among the ten best guitarists in the world.
I love nirvana, Kurt Cobain was a good song writer, but, by no means, does he rank in the top twenty, hell if that's the case, I should be on the list.

HAHA. That's funny. An entire forum of guitar players influenced by so many different musicians think that list of Best Guitarists are a joke. Hmmm...Why don't we take a pole and find out what Rockpage's votes are for the top 100? Everyone participating pick 10 of your choice, then we vote who they are. Just an idea to pass around.

ok.........i had to get in on this one. can someone please tell me how makes any sense:
# is 12 Kurt Cobain of Nirvana and # 70 is Eddie Van Halen????? how in the world can cobain be a better guitar player than eddie? it's a bit confusing.........please.....help me......to...understand

i'm a fan....not a player.

Anyway, back to the list. It's just about what I'd expect from Rolling Stone. The big surprises are Zappa. 3 cheers. And Glen Buxton. They should have paired him with Michael Bruce, though. These guys are where the term "ahead of their time" came from. I can't believe Alex Lifeson and Alex Skolnik didn't make the list. What about Yngwie Malmsteen? Sure, he sold out early but his debut album should have been enough to put him on the list. David Chastain? Better than most of those guys on his worst day. Also, Brian May, David Gilmour, and Adam Jones should have been a lot closer to the top.

Again, I think everyone can say that Rolling Stone really doesn't have a clue to what a good guitar player is, basing this from the forum here. I'm just curious to find out more about all the players mentioned because I'd like to look into them. What style do these players play and what would be their highlight to listen to? I think with a forum like this, we all can learn something and have our styles expanded by others here. Also, I'd like to know if there are any "jam nights" in the area? I've heard soooo much about a lot of the local players here and would love to have the opportunity to sit down and jam with anyone interested.
