how does phantom power work and what applications does it work best for. i have a line 6 amp and i have heard that it is best to make sure that the phantom power is turned off when using it with the direct line output. if you have any links to websites it would be appreciated.

Your best bet is to call an authorized dealer and tell them what you plan on doing with the equipment or visit. Never hurts to ask a lot of questions, thats the only way you can learn and understand stuff! Check your Line 6 owners manual, if you don't have it, go to their website and download the manual, there is probably something there explaining it to you.

Phantom power puts +48 Volts across pins 1 and 2 (I'm pretty sure its not 1 and 3) of the XLR. In order to turn off the phantom power for your amp, it will more than likley turn it off for the entire mixing board. Some brands do it in multiples of channels; unless it's a higer-end board with individual switches on each channel. However, you can eliminate any phantom power to your amp with a transformer isolator. Rapco sells one called an isoblox; it's a male to female XLR on a small box with a transformer inside it. The work really well with ground loop too.

Phantom power is designed to power condenser mics (which need batteries) without having to constantly put batteries in them.
