New Deftones album

Post by EyesOfAnguishbassist »

Any thoughts??

I just bought it and I was dissapointed. I was hoping it would be a little harder hitting like Around The Fur and the self titled album but it was very mellow, which i think is cool but not when every song sounds the same... thats my 2 cents

I liked it for it being a nice "change of pace".. but then five minutes after thinking that.. i remembered that the Deftones were around only to bring it and I didn't give 2 shits about chino moreno's singing capabilities...

all in all, it's ok... the new deftones t-shirt with the cd logo concept owns tho! =)

i dont care what you say... if you don't think "Hexagram" is one of the 10 greatest songs ever... I am prepared to fight you..

... to the death.

I dunno why, but words dont describe how happy that song makes me... weird, i know

I thought it was great. But it is a natural evolution from Moreno's Team Sleep project which is a lot more ambient and trip-hoppy. But I tend towards the ambient side of the music spectrum anyway. Even the metal bands I like are a little on the fringe. Much better than the eponymous album since it seems to have a lot more internal consistency. But if you want a straight ahead even prog-metal album this would not be your taste. For that direction just stop at Opeth or Meshuggah and enjoy that for a while!

I love the new Defones disc...this genre-bending album denies classification and conjures some of the most amazing sounds I've heard in heavy music. Despite the "wash" of production, all of the instruments create their own unique sonic space. As far as Chino's vocals go...you either love 'em or you hate 'em, and if you don't like them now, you probably never did.

Saturday Night Wrist reaffirms to me that the Deftones have a truly unique sound, sense of arrangement, and artistic sense. The album is much more King Crimson than "nu-metal"; hats off to the boys for having the balls to try something new in their sound!

Good comparison. It more or less fits in with the new prog movement with bands like Mew and Porcupine Tree. They still have an edginess and keep their song length to a something concise and not self-indulgent, while pushing things sonically and structurally enough that it is not the most MTV friendly stuff out there. "Hole in the Earth" and "Cherry Waves" are two of their best written songs hands down. Although I have no clue what was going on behind "Pink Cellphone" even if the end monologue is kind of funny - like what you hear someone mumbling about when totally stoned. But it is a natural progression from White Pony which had already broken the mold. Still think that one is their crowning achievement. Kind of like how everything Pink Floyd did after Dark Side went from good to blech. Or Radiohead after Kid A so it seems.
