New and Improved Galaxy Hot Spots!

Post by lonewolf »

While checking out Galaxy's wireless IEM system, I went thru their website and took a look at all their stuff. Many of you are familiar with their Hot Spot monitors that you put on a mic stand for personal monitoring. The idea in 1977 was to get the monitor closer to the musician's ear. At least it used to be that way....

They changed to 5" neodymium drivers late last year and it yielded new specs, namely sensitivity and max SPL output: 98db 1w/1m and 121db max output at 200WRMS (they like to report the peak SPL at 123db, but thats only 1/2 meter). They started including rubber feet to put them on the floor instead of the mic stand. Another nice by-product is that they now weigh-in at 4.5 lbs!

Always downsizing, I decided to get a few blems shipped for $100 each and try them out....

I connected a balanced send at 0db to a 375WRMS channel on a Peavey DPC1400X amp and then out to a pair of 16 ohm HotSpots on the floor with no processing. Unbelievable! I turned them up to where my EV SxA100 would be ringing with feedback and the Hot Spots just sounded crystal clear with no breakup and no feedback. Just what I was looking for.

Of course, there is a catch. These are only good for vocal monitoring. They have a steep rolloff below 150hz which helps to prevent feedback, but also limits them to vocal reproduction, which they excel at.

Anybody looking for vocal monitors that are lightweight, cheap, loud and sound good should give these a try. These aren't your father's Hot Spots.
...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...
