Help Tuning Drums

Post by Big Jim »

In anticipation of doing some recording, how should drums be tuned? Is there any exact method based on head size and number of drums? Or just do what sounds good to you?

Also, how close or far away should the drum mics be from the top head? (I will be using pro mics.) What do you do to eliminate ringing? Should there be some compression on each channel when recording?

I don't recall seeing this topic covered before. I did read the thread on the Shure Beta 52 bass drum mic.

Please discuss. Or PM me your ideas/thoughts if you wish. (I know many drummers are on here, but don't post much anymore.)

Thanks,

Big Jim

Here is a drummers forum I visit a lot. Scroll down and you will see a section for recording drums. It's a very busy forum with thousands of members world wide, where your questions are often answered within minutes .

Also there is a section called University with links to often ask questions.

Thanks Bill. That first link will keep me busy answering questions I had, and making me think about things I never realized.

Now I just gotta get around to doing it...writing & recording, that is.

Thanks everyone who got back to me. You gave me a lot of great tips & ideas. I'll do my best to be around to check out your bands (except Florida & Nevada...sorry) in the near future.
