Schecters are some of the nicest import guitars out there. You're not going to find a set-neck guitar with as nice of finishes/tops at that particular price-point.
Though as you find with guitars that are at the high-mid level quality point, the bottleneck is the pickups. old sKool has two Diamond Series C1s which he uses for drop tunings. He ended up dropping a set of Duncans in one of them, and none of us realized how muddy the stock pickups were until he upgraded. His appregios now are very distinct, and his leads cut through more. The Duncans are more Les Paul sounding and have just the right amount of gain to get a dirty sound that still retains its distinctness. So I definitely say go for the Schecter. If you don't like the EMGs (which should be fine, EMGs are very respected pickups), you can always drop another set of pickups in.

"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.
It comes down to you get what you pay for. Schecter makes a decent guitar for the money but they skimp on some things like hardware, electronics and paint, don't get me wrong the look pretty but any of the flame tops or fancy tops are a super thin veneer or a laminated photo of a flame top (alot of companies are doing that now since Fender came out with the photo flames years ago) and not solid quarter inch caps like the more expensive guitars have. Also any of their graphic paintjobs are not paintjobs but a printed out laminated picture which is then clearcoated, and they are not airbrused at all. But they are not going to tell you any of that. You can even see the dot patten from the cheap resolution printers that they use. This is how they keep the cost down. But their higher end stuff is a lot better. But like I said you get what you pay for, Ibanez, Jackson, Charvel and Fender also make cheap junk (or affordable depending on which side of the fence you are on) and then nicer quality high end guitars it just comes down to how much you are willing or able to spend.

well, i dont wanna go with the brands ive used before. its metal that i mainly play. i cannot spend a shitload of $$ , nor would i.
i have played high end guitars like gibson les pauls and didnt like it @ all. in fact, the les paul is prob the worst guitar ive ever played.
so far, i think the one i found is it. ive had emg pickups before in a jackon V i used to have. i liked them alot.
i dont want something that looks JUST metal, because there are some other musical things in the works.

The Peavey EVH Wolfgangs are much better than the Schecters but also alot more money. You can get a cheaper used Wolfgang special which is a flat top, no binding and solid color paint for in the $600 to $700 range. But the nice deluxes which are bound and arch tops with a nice flame or quilted maple caps are quite a bit more. They will sell for $1200 and up. And mind you these are used prices as they haven't made them since Eddie hooked back up with Charvel to make the new EVH seris guitars which are way way over priced as I heard Eddie is getting a 70% 30% split with Charvel and that is why they are trying to get $2300 for them and they are sitting because realistically they are not worth half of that. Just buy something that feels good in your hands and has a nice neck because everything else can be changed. So it doesnt matter if it is a $400 or a $4000 guitar it just matters the way it feels in your hands and plays.

no, i havent tried that brand.
also, graphic paintjob.....photo or not, i dont care. i think the design looks cool, and thats all i need to know.
stuff like that doesnt bother me @ all. i wasnt even worried about having a floyd rose (or FR knock off). it has one, so thats cool i guess. i guess ill start using the bar. im not too hard to please with guitars. ive played on beat up guitars, and really cool ones.
I just find one my eye likes and then i go down the line with what it has.
i guess its good that i havent heard "man, this guitar sucks ass".

I think the low-end Schecters are the best current value in electric guitars. I see guitars as tools. A carpenter needs a good hammer, but it doesn't need to be laser-guided, nor does it need a Chromalume paint package. I agree the Schecter p-ups aren't world-crushing, but they're similar to other guitars in the price point. However, you get carved tops, set necks, string-thru, and Schecter makes some damn pretty guitars.---------->JMS
Actually, the Floyd Rose should be a major factor in whether you want that guitar or not. If you plan to use the bar, be prepared to revamp your palm muting technique a lot. You also have the extra maintenance, and not being able to change tunings on the fly. If you don't plan to use the bar, get a fixed bridge one instead and save some bling.SpellboundByMetal wrote:i wasnt even worried about having a floyd rose (or FR knock off). it has one, so thats cool i guess. i guess ill start using the bar.
Great advice Jimi. Spellbound, if you do any bends while there are open strings ringing, which is common in a lot of metal, the tuning on the open strings goes out when you bend the other strings. If you're happy using a fixed bridge now and don't use a bar, you are probably going to hate a guitar with a whammy.Jimi Hatt wrote:Actually, the Floyd Rose should be a major factor in whether you want that guitar or not.
