I did, made my way to the front row right against the railing. Bob looked and sounded great, AWESOME show. Junior Brown was...interesting. An even better show (sorry Bob) was CSNY last Sunday. Its in my top 5 shows of all time. They played for over 3 hours and were EXCELLENT.

Yeah, I'm a little late in posting about it, don't get around (online) much anymore... ;)

Anyway...

The show was supposed to be at Medlar Field, but was moved to the Bryce Jordan Center at the last minute due to the rainy weather. The seating was pretty much a free-for-all there, so we opted for the floor, since seats at the BJC suck and are very uncomfortable, and don't have a very good view when it's a stage setup.

There were 4 bands all together. The first act was Elana James & The Continental Two. This lady was formerly in a band called "Hot Club of Cowtown", and also was in Bob Dylan's band on his last tour. It was old school country, with a jazz and rockabilly slant, and surprisingly, I enjoyed it a lot. I've always had more respect for old style country music, and this act made that respect stronger then ever. They were top-notch musicians. Elana plays the fiddle and sings, and her skill is unbelieveable! There were also 2 guitarists and a double-bass player, and they all were also very talented at their craft.

Next up was Junior Brown. Another old-school country sounding act, and damn can that guy play guitar! He actually plays an instrument that he designed himself, called a "guit-steel", which combines a 6 string Telecaster-like guitar and a n 8-string lap steel, all in one. He sang while going between both necks of this thing *flawlessly*. Man did he ever RIP! He even did a blues number, which was totally mind-blowing. Dare I say, even better than the guy after him...

Jimmie Vaughan was up next. Stevie Ray Vaughan's older brother. Just what you would expect, heavy blues, and when he sings he sounds just like Stevie Ray. Very enjoyable. He even had a lady come out and sing who used to tour with his brother, named Lou Ann Barton.

Finally, it was time for Dylan. Before the show, I had listened to Bob's latest album, "Modern Times", and it was alright. Traditional bluesy sound. Overall, Bob Dylan's set was cool, but it did tend to drag on at times. He did a few classics, including Just Like A Woman, Tangled Up In Blue, Highway 61, All Along the Watchtower, Like a Rolling Stone, etc.., which was cool and all, but the way he sang them left a lot to be desired. It's like he would only sing 3 words at a time, spacing it out, making it tricky to sing along with. ;) I have to say though, his newer material is interesting, completely different than his classics, and worth a listen.

But anyway, it was a great show, got exposed to some new stuff (for me)and I got my money's worth! ;) (I won the tickets from Q94!)

Definitely glad I went.

I also went to the Dylan show. I'll admit it - before the show, I wasn't a Dylan fan. I could name a handful of songs I liked, but never really got into his music overall. I went because a) my wife told me to, b) my brother-in-law wanted me to go, and c) at least I was going to see a rock icon/legend.
The first band was amazing. They each mastered their instruments and had fun while playing.
The second act, Junior Brown, I detested. The last post said he could really play his instrument (the guit-steel), and while I believe it is impressive that an old man such as himself had it in him, most of what he played was screechy, choppy (moreso than lets say Jimmy Page), and overall not impressive most of the time. He hit a few licks that I liked, but all the songs were the same (old time country I guess has that effect) and lacked energy... I thought his drummer was going to have a heart attack on stage - looked to be about 80 years old.
Jimmie Vaughan was cool to see, but he didn't play much that amazed me like I expected. He did sound like SRV, my favorite artist of all time, vocally, just lacked the flare on guitar. I will say, I was excited when he played Texas Flood.
Then came Dylan - I gotta say, I was proven wrong about how I thought the show would go. Despite the lack of stage performance or acknowledgement of the crowd at all, I was into it the whole time, and went nuts for his encores, Watchtower and Rolling Stone. It was a pleasant suprise from start to finish. So now my bass player, who has always made me listen to Dylan on long trips to shows, can be satisfied that I can dig some of the stuff he'll play now.

Junior's not all that old. He's in character. And to say that he couldn't play is like saying that Dylan can't sing. Dylan sings a better Dylan than anyone! Followin' me? :D ------>JMS

Yeah, Junior's only about 53, and I thought he looked even younger than that.

I stand corrected - but I still didn't like it. To each their own though. The great part about the Dylan show is that there was something for everyone.
