Here's another article...
Roethlisberger injured in motorcycle crash
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle crash Monday morning and taken to a hospital.
"He was alert and conscious," said Ernie Roman, shift commander for the Allegheny County emergency service.
Steelers Dave Lockett, outside Mercy Hospital, confirmed the accident but did not provide additional details.
In only his second year in the NFL, Roethlisberger helped guide the Steelers to the Super Bowl championship last season.
Calls to Roethlisberger's agent, Leigh Steinberg, were not immediately returned.
The 24-year-old Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding his motorcycle. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended to make helmets optional.
In May 2005, Steelers coach Bill Cowher lectured Roethlisberger on the dangers of riding without a helmet.
"He talked about being a risk-taker and I'm not really a risk-taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said at the time. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."

Surgery going on now, from ESPN:
PITTSBURGH -- Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was badly hurt in a motorcycle crash Monday and undergoing surgery. The extent of his injuries was not known.
Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition, said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma at Mercy Hospital.
"He was talking to me before he left for the operating room," Jones said before the operation. "He's coherent. He's making sense. He knows what happened. He knows where he is. From that standpoint, he's very stable."
The 24-year-old Roethlisberger likes to ride without a helmet, a habit that once prompted coach Bill Cowher to lecture him on the dangers.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that Roethlisberger wasn't wearing a helmet. The Associated Press reported it wasn't clear whether he was wearing a helmet or not.
The crash happened at an intersection at the edge of downtown at about 11:30 a.m. A pool of blood was still visible there by early afternoon.
Police spokesman Lt. Kevin Kraus said police and homicide units were investigating the crash, something standard when there is an accident with critical injuries. Kraus would give no details on the extent of Roethlisberger's injuries or if anyone else was injured.
The accident occurred on Second Avenue near the intersection of 10th Street in Pittsburgh, around 11:30 a.m. The route is one often taken in traveling to the Steelers' facility in the Southside section of the city.
Steelers backup quarterback Charlie Batch was at the emergency room. He had no comment.
A silver Chrysler New Yorker with damage to the front passenger fender was removed and Roethlisberger's bike was loaded onto a flatbed truck. Police were detouring traffic around the crash scene as onlookers and media gathered.
One of his agents, Ryan Tollner, is in route to Pittsburgh for what was supposed to be a pre-planned trip and will arrive later Monday.
In only his second year in the NFL, Roethlisberger became the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship. He was 23 when he did it last February.
Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended to make helmets optional.
In May 2005, Cowher warned him about safe riding after Cleveland tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was injured in a motorcycle accident. Winslow tore knee ligaments and was lost for the season.
Roethlisberger continued to ride after Winslow's accident and that angered Terry Bradshaw, who quarterbacked the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories during the 1970s.
Visiting the Steelers' training camp last summer, Bradshaw remarked: "Ride it when you retire."
ESPN.com football writers Len Pasquarelli and John Clayton and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

An update from www.thepittsburghchannel.com
"According to a police source, Roethlisberger suffered a broken jaw, broke his left sinus cavity, suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, lost many teeth and has severe injuries to his knees from hitting the pavement.
A plastic surgeon has been called in, the source said."

I'm an insider...
Retired halfback Jerome Bettis, in California today, was keeping in touch with some people in the organization and said the reports he's received are that Roethlisberger will be fine.
"First, it's good to see he's not in bad shape, as a friend, and to make sure he's OK," said Bettis. "Another good thing is it is minor enough that it shouldn't affect him on the field this fall."
Gonna be ok , y'all.

And I agree with that...however, I choose to ride with a lid.Hurricane wrote:Let those who ride ...decide.
Interesting though...if Ben were wearing a helmet, most of his injuries would have been prevented. Although, if that cager would not have pulled in front of him, wouldn't have been an issue at all.
I know that he has a clause in his contract that negates or seriously reduces his pay if he is doing reckless things - and I recall Cowher thumping him previously for riding a motorcycle.
Interesting debate about highly paid personalities and controlling what they are permitted to do with their personal time.
Opinions?

You would think him being a professional football player and having to wear a helmet everytime he plays football that he would know to wear a helmet when RIDING A MOTORCYCLE....Nonetheless I hope he's alright, but you would think he's smart enough to wear a helmet since he wears them all the time to keep from head injuries.

I know the intersection well. Like most left-hand turns off of a bridge nearing a tunnel, out of towners typically panic when the see the tunnel. Rumor has it that her car had Maine plates, so I have a feeling that she was more at fault than Ben.f.sciarrillo wrote:Sources say he was going threw a intersection, and another car went in front of him. Had right of way, so the other car was at fault. I also wouldn't necessarily say his career is over, yet.
I hope everything turns out Ok for him, I think its a shame they are turning this into a helmet issue. Even with a open face helmet he would have still had his face and jaw all smashed up so i don't think we can say the helmet law would have saved most of his injuries. A full face would have but that wasn't the law anyway when it was in effect.
I choose to wear a helmet but I don't want the government telling me I have to.

Tony, I'm glad to hear you're smart enough to wear a helmet but to those who choose not to (everyone's entitled to his or her opinion) it is absolutely retarded to get on a motorcycle without wearing one. It's extra protection for the most important part of your body — your brain — and you are safer with one on than without. Period.tonefight wrote:I hope everything turns out Ok for him, I think its a shame they are turning this into a helmet issue. Can you suffer injuries with a helmet on? Of course. But it's another layer of padding that the pavement or the car fender has to get through to damage your mellon, regardless of who's at fault.
I hope this serves as a reminder to all who ride that the danger of riding motorcycles is not the rider but rather the careless motorists out there who aren't watching for you ... and there are a TON of them. Car vs. cycle ... car ALWAYS wins.
Wear a frikking helmet, everyone ... please. Being alive is much more important than looking cool.
