Very cool Hawk, thanks for the info! My pitch pipe is all dented up and smells like old spit, so maybe I'll spring for the electronic one.Hawk wrote:If anyone is interested. I picked up a small (fits on a key chain) electronic pitch pipe (just push a button) at Ford Music Store.
It's called "Pocket Tones". Cones C to C or F to F. The F to F goes lower so I got that one. You might call to see what stock they have, 943 8520.
Retails for $14.95. You can probably get a discount on that. I haven't tried it yet, buit I know it will work.
Yeah Steve. Very enjoyable evening talking with you. We should get together sometime. Here is an old thread with my snare collection :nightcrawler_steve wrote:Bill, I had such a BLAST talkin with you last night. Lookin forward to next time
Speaking of the pitch pipe.....
I just found some aps for my iphone I can download that have pitch and metronome all in one. Im stoked! Some of these aps are really cool, and some especially extra cool stuff for guitar and bass players.....but they dont frequent this thread do they - na na na-na na!

No particular favorite. The Slingerland we played was the Super Sound King. Slingerland's answer to the Ludwig Super Sensitive, with extended wires and a throw that lowers both sides. And it is micro adjustable on each side. EDIT : Yes it is a COB. 14 x 5.5
The Manu Katche is actually a prototype. 500 prototypes were built. 100 were sent to the USA (#401 to 500)
The Chambers is the most versatile.
The DW is a Craviotto. Nuff said.
My favorite,
ah,
the.......ones I made
Well they are built to suit what I want from a drum, so perhaps not everyone will like 'em. But.........I do.

My favorite,

With all due respect to DW and Craviotto, I had a 14x5 craviotto gold plated maple snare drum for a day. I bought it at Dales and no matter how I tuned it, it just wasn't happening for me. I'm a sucker for the Ludwig sound I guess. Give me a supraphonic, a cob supraphonic, a hammered bronze (I used a 6.5x14 on our live TV show recording of "Battleground" and it was one of the best snare sounds I ever got. I wish I had an MP3 of the song, I'd put it up here for you to check out.) or give me a 60's or 70's Black Beauty, preferably engraved, and I'll be happy.
That's funny. I had a Ludwig Bronze (not hammered) Super Sensitive for a week that I got at Dale's. No matter what I did I couldn't make myself like it. Took it back. That happens to be one of Aaron Kimmell's favorite snares.CCdrums wrote:With all due respect to DW and Craviotto, I had a 14x5 craviotto gold plated maple snare drum for a day. Shawn's using my 1970 Supra Which still sounds good after it's been beaten up for decades. He also uses a Pearl Ultracast. But he's been wanting a deep Black Baeuty.
With the Supra's, do you prefer ludaloy (aluminum alloy) or brass ? And what depth ?
Hawk,
I prefer the 6.5x14 luddaloy supra. I'm running a coated ambassador on top/ambassador snare side with 42 strand snares (Bonham's snare set up only he used a coated emperor which I sometimes do as well). It sounds great IMO. Lots of power, nice pop and very versatile. I really like it. I'm working on getting an MP3 formatted version of our song with the 6.5x14 hammered bronze supra on it for you to check out. I think you'll like the sound of the snare on that recording. Big and powerful with lots of poppy tone...a great rock snare sound if I do say so myself

nice collection bill.
Hawk,
I haven't seen the video and I don't really have any official plans for it. If I were to do something with it, I probably would edit it a bit to make it a little more professional. If someone wants a copy, all they have to do is call Data Music Services (944-2406) and Dave will burn them a copy. It hasn't been widely requested or anything, so as long as his cost of copying it is covered, we should be good to go. I'll contact him and let him know what's up. If there are any changes, I'll post them here. Thanks.

I did read it, I'm just sheepish about taking my new tom apart to test the mount. I don't know why, but I'm a little reluctant to disassemble the drum and mess with the yamaha "mojo" if you know what I mean. Maybe if I saw how it works, I'd be a little more comfortable with it.Hawk wrote:If you would please and thank you.
Would you read my last post in the tech sector section - dated 7/27 - about the drum mount ? If you are interested in increased tom resonance, I just happened to get lucky. It works.
Thanks,
Bill
I understand completely ! I took notice that no one volunteered to try it. That's why I thought if you (plural) saw it you (plural) could decide for yourselves.CCdrums wrote:I did read it, I'm just sheepish about taking my new tom apart to test the mount. They are still in the prototype stage and I'm searching for feedback from area drummers so that I can finalize a design.
Even if you don't want one, your feedback will be a great help.
An ideal selling situation - say I was selling them at Dale's Drum Shop - would be to have two or three identical toms (all tuned the same) with a shell mount, a rims mount and one of my mounts.
The demonstration would be obvious. A drummer could then decide if the effort is worth it.
Once you see how it's mounted you might see that it's not so intrusive.
OK, so what do we need to do? I have a 10" drum that I rarely play, I wouldn't be so reluctant to use that one for your test. Let me know.Hawk wrote:I understand completely !
