I'd prefer the tax cuts for businesses Obama proposed become actions.

And the inequity in tax % be fixed.

That speech last night was a snooze fest. I slept through most of it. Especially when he started talking about the tax cuts to businesses that come back to the us. Everyone with in an ear shot knows it was nothing but crap.

He needs to worry about the companies that are currently here. Sure he will give tax cuts to the companies that come back. But he will raise the taxes of the ones that are already here to pay for it. We have some of the highest corporate tax rates in the world. He needs to lower them for all businesses. Not just the ones he wants to party it up with.

The only action i'd like to see is to undo all the stupid crap they've done over the past 12 years or so and eliminate the tax code in favor of a flat tax with a poverty level exemption.

Everything else is just an attempt to save a burning house with gasoline.

I don't think many realize the consequences of the rest of the world catching up to us industrially. The politicians either don't realize it or won't admit it. The answers to our standard of living sure as hell don't lie in Washington DC. On the contrary, the more debt they pile on, the lower our standard of living will become.

Wrong Frank. He has been asking the Republicans to cut taxes on businesses who hire Americans. And increase taxes on companies who OUT SOURCE. Why is that so hard to understand ? He's been begging for it since day one. If you stayed awake you might have learned that, and you won't hear it on fox.

Ask yourself why the Republicans would be against that ? Perhaps they are bought and paid for by the companies who out source ?

We are a consumption based economy. Cut taxes to the people who buy things and increase taxes on the ones who hoard it. In other words, cut taxes to the middle class and have the people who pay half of what we do pay the same percentage that the middle class does.

We were a consumer based economy as long as people had equity in their homes. Until the housing equity problem is allowed to resolve itself, growth will be almost nil. Somewhere along the line, our consumer based economy became a conspicuous consumption economy and that standard is not sustainable without prolonged periods of debt consolidation.

Changing tax rates with the present tax code is PISSING INTO THE WIND and is nothing but a populist rallying cry.

State of the Union Address

In 70 minutes, the president, whose speech doubled as his first national re-election stump speech, laid the groundwork for new policy measures on reforming the tax code, education, foreign trade, influence peddling in Congress and clean energy tax credits, all while shrinking government.

Tax code
• To prevent businesses from getting out of paying its fair share of taxes by moving jobs and profits overseas, every multinational company should have to pay a basic minimum tax from now on. "And every penny should go towards lowering taxes for companies that choose to stay here and hire here," Obama said.
• "If you're an American manufacturer, you should get a bigger tax cut. If you're a high-tech manufacturer, we should double the tax deduction you get for making products here. And if you want to relocate in a community that was hit hard when a factory left town, you should get help financing a new plant, equipment, or training for new workers."

Trade Enforcement Unit
• Obama announced the creation of a Trade Enforcement Unit that will be charged with investigating unfair trade practices in countries like China. "There will be more inspections to prevent counterfeit or unsafe goods from crossing our borders," he said. "And this Congress should make sure that no foreign company has an advantage over American manufacturing when it comes to accessing financing or new markets like Russia."

Job creation
• Obama announced a national commitment to train two million Americans with skills that will lead directly to a job.

Education
• Obama demanded every state require that all students stay in high school until they either graduate or turn 18.
• The president called for an extension of the tuition tax credit that is meant to save middle-class families tuition dollars. The president also called for a doubling of the number of work-study jobs in the next five years.
• To colleges and universities, Obama pledged, "If you can't stop tuition from going up, the funding you get from taxpayers will go down."

Small business
• The president called for an extension of tax relief to small businesses that are creating jobs. "Both parties agree on these ideas," he told Congress. "So put them in a bill, and get it on my desk this year."

Energy
• Obama demanded Congress open more than 75% of potential offshore oil and gas resources.
• In so doing, Obama announced, "I'm requiring all companies that drill for gas on public lands to disclose the chemicals they use."
• The president demanded a passage of clean energy tax credits to create energy sector jobs.
• Obama announced he was directing his administration to allow the development of clean energy on enough public land to power three million homes. The department of defense, which he characterized as the world's largest consumer of energy, will make one of the "largest commitments to clean energy in history" – with the Navy purchasing enough capacity to power a quarter of a million homes a year.

Infrastructure
• The president said he would sign an executive order "clearing away the red tape that slows down too many construction projects," he said. "Take the money we're no longer spending at war, use half of it to pay down our debt, and use the rest to do some nation-building right here at home."

Refinancing homes
• Obama announced that he would be sending Congress a plan that gives every responsible homeowner the chance to save "about $3,000 a year on their mortgage," by refinancing at historically low interest rates.

Lending reform
• Obama announced the appointment of consumer financial protection bureau chief Richard Cordray as the country's top lending watchdog. "If you're a big bank or financial institution, you are no longer allowed to make risky bets with your customers' deposits," the president said. "You're required to write out a 'living will' that details exactly how you'll pay the bills if you fail – because the rest of us aren't bailing you out ever again."

Financial Crimes Unit
• The president announced the creation of a Financial Crimes Unit comprising highly trained investigators to crack down on large-scale fraud and protect people's investments.

Investigation into mortgage lending
• Obama also announced the creation of a special unit of federal prosecutors and leading state attorney generals to expand investigations into the abusive lending and packaging of risky mortgages that led to the housing crisis. "This new unit will hold accountable those who broke the law, speed assistance to homeowners, and help turn the page on an era of recklessness that hurt so many Americans," he said.

Payroll tax
• The president demanded that Congress pass the payroll tax cut "without delay."

Influence peddling in Congress
• Obama asked Congress to send him a bill that would ban insider trading by its own members. "Let's limit any elected official from owning stocks in industries they impact," he said. "Let's make sure people who bundle campaign contributions for Congress can't lobby Congress, and vice versa."

Shrink government
• The president said that he has asked Congress to grant him the authority to consolidate the federal bureaucracy for a "leaner, quicker, and more responsive to the needs of the American people."

Defense spending
• Obama demanded a defense a cut of nearly half a trillion dollars to its budget. He said that he also sent Congress legislation that will "secure our country from the growing danger of cyber threats."

Veteran aid
• Obama proposed a Veterans Job Corps to help communities hire their returning veterans as cops and firefighters, "so that America is as strong as those who defend her."

1st of all, any issues you may have are cleared up with my flat tax plan. PERIOD. END OF MY SOLUTION...however...

Lets assume that the man who makes $57K per year pays $10K in federal tax. Are you saying that the man who makes $57K per day pays about $5K per year in taxes? I don't think so. I don't think the man who makes $57K per day has a salary of $57K per day either, or it would be taxed at a higher rate. As a matter of fact, I would bet that very little of that $57K per day is taxed at a lower rate...

I think you have a problem with long term capital gains taxed at 15%. By definition, long term capital gains cannot be income in the year the assets are received--they can't be taxed until the assets are sold. Another misconception is that the value of the stock at distribution is taxed at 15%...nope, sorry. Only the amount of stock price appreciation from receipt to sale is subject to 15%. Unless the stock skyrockets, this gain will be minimal compared to the basis. The basis is taxed as ordinary income. If the stock is sold before a year after receipt, gains are taxed as ordinary income. The 15% taxable gains from stock options are minimal at best and non existent in a down year.

One thing that all but the most idiot politicians are on record with is that if you raise the rate of long term capital gains to that of ordinary income, it would result in fewer revenues to the treasury. Even Obama admitted that.

You have been lied to about a great many things.

All 200 or so companies out of tens of thousands who are not multinational?

This is just more populist bullshit that accomplishes nothing.

Is he suggesting that with the gigantic size of the federal government, we don't already have people who do this?

Typical state bullying by the federal government.

I would like to see ALL misplaced federal funding stop. All it does is cause the tuition problem in the first place.

Actually I based the $57,000 on Mitt Romney. He made $57,000 a day in 2010 and paid 14.8% in taxes while someone who makes $57,000 a year might be paying 30%.

Will your flat tax increase middle class taxes ? Will it increase the 14.8 percenters like Mitt ?

The first sensible thing he said...so long as they aren't gutting Social Security by cutting contributions and calling it a "payroll tax" cut.

Who said this and who kidnapped President Obama?

I have always been a proponent of the federal government becoming the first big customer of clean energy so that the industry could have a customer base to start with.

One thing that he didn't think of was to convert all federal fleet vehicles over to natural gas so that service stations would have customers to justify adding natural gas to their offerings.

I don't understand your point. Are you saying tuition goes up because the government subsidises college education ?

Fuck that...its time for the federal government to get out of the mortgage industry...didn't anybody learn anything from 2008? DUH.

Besides, people who are underwater need to learn a lesson from this so that fewer people will make the same mistake twice. Nobody, corporate or individual, will change their bad behavior if they are rewarded for it.
