Can you think of a song that's a rip off of another song?

Black dog gay?....Wow, if that is considered gay by todays young musicians, I guess I'm out of touch and turning into my dad. I always thought gay was KC and the sunshine band or Air Supply...not Zeppelin and Black dog! Arrrggghhh.......
I am with you there,....but...Robert Plant did prance around on stage wearing young girl's blouses 2 sizes too small for him singing about fairies in the hedgerow. He did have kind of a girlish voice.
you know us youngins...we throw that word around a lot.

i don't care for the song though.

This is gonna sound crazy but, Shania Twain's "Man, I Feel Like A Woman" sounds ALOT like Aerosmith's "Uncle Salty."

By only using 3 chords and writing hundreds of songs it is hard not to come up with different combinations. The drums all sound the same to me also.
Take a listen to Powerage sometime. It has a little more diversity to it. Focus in on Riff Raff. Best AC/DC song ever. I've always prefered Bon Scott era AC/DC...they were more interesting to me then. It seems like sometime in the 80's they found a formula and have stayed with it ever since.

On a different note, I always hear people giving AC/DC guff (not necessarily the OP here) but I never hear anybody doing that style that's better.

The track was sampled from Under Pressure by Queen.

It's not an exact replication though. According to Ice himself, the Queen version goes "Dum, dum, dum, da, da, dum, dum, " whereas his version goes "Dum, dum, dum, da, da, dum, pop, dum."

You may be thinking of Ice Ice Baby. I'm pretty sure the intro was directly sampled from "Under Pressure" by Queen/Bowie.

Didn't Molly Hatchet record every song Skynyrd discarded at the studio?

CCR's- "Fortunate Son," Rollling Stones- "Sympathy for the Devil," Marshall Tucker- "Can't You See," "Traffic- "Dear, Mr. Fantasy," Blind Melon- "Change," Cracker- "Get on With it," all have the same basic progression. I remember an Altoona band from the 90's Neogumbo.

They used to do a few medleys of similar songs.

Another one I remember involved Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama," Warren Zevon- "Werewolves of London," Spin Doctors, "Jimmy olsen's Blues," Bad Company's "Fell Like Makin' Love," into Steve Miller Band's "Take the Money and Run."

Vanilla Ice had a nice lawsuit handed him from the "Under Pressure" rip-off. And in another stupid move totally ripped off "Play that Funky Music" by Rob Parissi. Rob sued, and won....big time. Could be a spin-off thread. When writing, do you sit back, listen, and ask yourself if your own song reminds you of one you may have heard before? I remember reading that Paul McCartney waited to bring his song "Yesterday" to the rest of the Beatles because he was convinced he had "knicked it" from someone. Turns out it was his and his alone. George wasn't as fortunate with "My Sweet Lord" though!

I'm not really familiar with many Beatles songs. What song did Harrison rip off when he wrote "My Sweet Lord"??

Don't you mean I - V - VI - IV Paul? And Bad Daze Rob, the bass line in the Bush song Comedown rips of Bon Jovi's You Give Love A Bad Name.

If that's the case, Skynyrd discarded all of their best songs.

If Jon Fogerty can get sued for plagiarizing his own songs, why can't ac/dc and Green Day ??

As for Vanilla ice, why is it he get sued and no other rap artist ? If you look at rap; a lot of their samples come from popular songs, hence; Puff Daddy and a slew of others ...

No, though that progression has become pretty well used in a lot of modern songs (e.g., When I Come Around by Green Day, Glycerine by Bush, Damn It! by Blink 182, With or Without You by U2).

The I - vi - IV - V progression was used a lot in early rock and doo-wop ballads such as Blue Moon and Unchained Melody. There were variations on it too; I believe Lonesome Town by Ricky Nelson was a I - iii - IV - V progression.

CCdrums wrote:I'm not talking about sampling and stuff like that, just the general outline or structure of the song. The first one that comes to mind:

"Freebird" - Lynrd Skynrd......"Highway Song" - Blackfoot

It just seems like the guys in Blackfoot said "OK, Skynrd had a huge hit with Freebird, lets copy the song format exactly and just change the words around a little bit and we could have a hit too!"
Well, Rickey Medlocke from Blackfoot was in Lynyrd Skynyrd and left to form Blackfoot and he is now back with Skynyrd again; so, I would definitely think there was a direct influence on Highway Song from Freebird

vanilla didn't ask for permission to use it. unfortunatly, p. diddy, or saun puffy combs of puff daddy (for fucks sake, how many times can you rename yourself?) or whatever he is going by now (and other rap artists that use samples), asked for permission. 'member when puffy comb dad sean used cashmere and he did it on snl and jimmy page played guitar for it. what the fuck?

oh yea, paralyzer rips off a zeppelin song... what the fuck is it called... trampled underfoot. total rip off... total rip off.

Paralyzer sounds just like that Franz Ferdinand song, Take Me Out, to my ears.

My bad Paul  I thought you were talking about 1,5,6,4. You folks know that Neil Young got sued for not making Neil Young sounding records. He made some kind of fucked up electronica records and got sued for not being Neil Young enough
