A Lincoln Park woman in her 20s was killed in Melvindale Monday night in an accident where a firework she thought was defective hit her in the face, Melvindale police said.
The accident happened around 10:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Town Auto Wash on Outer Drive near Dix, said Melvindale Detective Mike Welch. She was later pronounced dead at Detroit Receiving Hospital, Welch said.
WWJ-AM is reporting that the victim was 27-year-old Danielle Barse of Lincoln Park.
Police have not confirmed the identity of the woman killed.
There were at least seven to eight adults and several children who witnessed the accident, Welch said. The woman’s own children were also eyewitnesses, he said.
Police believe that the accident happened during a neighborhood fireworks show.
Welch said the woman was killed while using a commercial-grade 3 inch mortar firework, and he isn’t sure if she was familiar with how it worked.
“What she was killed with you would have to be licensed to even purchase,” Welch said. “This is something a city would’ve set off… this isn’t even supposed to be available from a fireworks dealer.”
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 36 fireworks-related consumer deaths between 2000 and 2005, according to a 2006 news release. The commission estimated there were 10,800 emergency room-treated injuries associated with all fireworks in 2005, the release said. The release also mentioned an accident that occurred July 4, 2005 where a man was killed after lighting a four-inch mortal shell in a homemade mortar tube with a cigarette lighter.
Who needs gold and diamonds when you can have chrome....
My 4th was fun. I hung out with a bunch of neighbors and watched as they and some other people set off the kind of stuff that should be used in wars. I'm pretty sure everyone else in the Altoona region saw these displays as well... Heh. Was fun though, and no deaths... Although pyro was high in stock last night
Other than the blister on the guys right hand and the peeled part, the most of it looks like hot wax...I am a burn victim from years ago...I had a can of mix gas from a cycle i was working on catch fire and after looking towards two friends and not knowing where to throw it...I was kneeling down and tried to twist around and toss to a safe spot...Well i struck my leg and flipped it over myself...I was burned 2nd and 3rd degree both hands, arms, and legs 60% of my body. The rest was sunburned like... When they cut my clothes off my parts looked like his hand with water sacks all over... I had nightmares of fire for months... My hands had to be wrapped like boxing gloves to keep my fingers from healing together... I get paranoid when I smell gas now...
But I still play with fireworks and have been doing small displays for our town and old age home for past 12 years....I'll never grow up!!..
Hope everyone has a safe one because I know it's not over since the 4th is...Allot will wait till this weekend to do it....(I know my show is Friday)...and we play at a LARGE display on Sat.
"If your celebrating the 4TH with a 5TH....Don't add pyros!!"
