My vote's for satch... I have a few of both their albums, have the Satriani about played out but just cant get into the Vai... Dunno what it is, but i just cant dig Vai as much

I see no mention of Steve Morse. He got to fill the shoes of Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple and Satch turned the gig down when he was offered it. No only Morse plays in DP also the Dixie Dregs and the Steve Morse Band. Listen to some of those Dregs songs like Take It Off the Top, Assembly Line, etc and Steve Morse Band's User Friendly, Tumeni Notes, anything from the Southern Steel album and you will see that Morse is a guitar god! Also to the he was voted 5 times running in a row "BEST GUITARIST!"in Guitar Magazine that the magazine retired him for the voting!
