Has anyone here ran their EMG 81's w/ an 18v mod? I'm running mine in 9v now and I know you can run two 9v batteries in a series to get even more output. It's supposed to make the batteries last longer. The '81 is rated for 27v, but the company doesn't recommend anything past 18v. I might try that mod and get the EMG Afterburner for another 25db of gain just for something to do. I just thought of this today at work and the idea sounds wicked, but I'm not sure how practical? Might be a little bit too much, my ADA might beg for mercy.

It shouldn't make much difference in the output level...the higher voltage will bias the op amps at a proportionally lower current. What this mod will do is create more headroom so the signal won't clip as easily with harder picking, resulting in more dynamics (and perhaps a little more signal) on harder picked sounds. The only gain you should get is from the reduction of compression from clipping.

BTW, I was thinking of selling my ADA MP1 SS mod.
...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...

Thanks for the info. I tried looking on EMG's web, but my computer is messing up. I remember they had all kinds of Q&A's and different mods and stuff like that. I think I'm gonna try the 18V to see if it makes any difference
