Vacation spots

What's the coolest place anyone here has been to on Vacation?
My Girlfriend and I are trying to think of someplace different to go, but we're at a loss. I'd like to hear about you're experiences and maybe we can get some ideas. Thanks alot

If you don't want to do the beach thing or have the money for an extravagant trip, Toronto is a great place to go. It is a huge, safe, very clean city with a fantastic live music scene and many other activities to do. I have been there dozens of times and always have fun. I even got to jam at Jeff Healey's twice. Also, you can stop at Niagra Falls along the way and see all the sites there as well. Nashville is also a very cool place.

st. Lucia was cool, anywhere in the northwest i reccomend, columbia river gorge/ mt saint helens was cool , red wood forest. grand canyon, sadona if you want to head to the southwest but i wouldn't head there now. too efing hot! there really isn't any place i would rather be in the spring and early summer though than right here in western PA. or maybe ireland, never been there. just some ideas, theres alot of cool stuff to see on this continent, thats for sure. good luck!

I like heading to North Carolina's Outer Banks every summer. All the beach, but only a fraction of the crowds you see at other beach hot spots like Ocean City or Virginia Beach. (Although it is starting to build up there, that might change.) I'm heading back there with some friends in early August, can't wait!

I'm gonna second Toronto. I've been there a bunch and I love it. Check out Casa Loma, the Toronto Zoo, or the Hockey hall of fame!!! There is a bunch of things to do and it is a really safe, clean city.

Savannah, Georgia. Lot's of fun historical stuff to see, it's beautiful, plus it's one of the most haunted cities in the U.S.

Besides, A common joke about Savannah and the cities nearby is: "If you go to Atlanta, the first question people ask you is, 'What's your business?' In Macon they ask, 'Where do you go to church?' Chincoteague Virginia....

Is a Wildlife Refuge.....very user friendly.....wild horses....nice quiet beach...bike & hike paths all over the place...camping is available (for those who love mosquitos at night)...

Cool place....we thouroughly enjoyed it there.....

We stayed at the Blue Herron......highly recommended!

Bethany Beach in Delaware. 10 Minutes from Ocean City, but none of the annoying constant partying. It's a family beach, and well worth it.

BadDazeShelly and I escape to the Poconos at least once a year. We hit the honeymoon resorts up in that area and get those rooms with the swimming pools and the champagne glass hot tubs.

Yeah and no taxes!..Has a cool small magic shop in the mini mall near the strip to the beach.

Don't go to the gay beach!

If camping, Letchworth State Park in Western NY is absolutely beautiful, the hiking is outstanding...highly recommend. It does not take that long to get there.
For a romantic vacation, we liked Rosarita Beach in Baja California (Mexico) off season (we were there in November and the place was empty) expensive to get to Cali (take a bus over the border dirt cheap) but once in Mexico everything is CHEAP...we had an oceanside room in an empty hotel for less than $100.00. Beach was not the cleanest (it IS Mexico), but we really hate the popular places like Ocean City and even Outer Banks (but Okracoke down there is quaint). Depends on what kind of vacation you want I guess, we hate lots of commerce and people but some like it.
Here is a warning: if you are going out of country and you don't yet have a passport you now need them even for the Carribbean...this is new. I think Canada and Mexico you still don't need them but everywhere else you do. It is now taking at least 10 weeks (my daughter and I are going to Jamaica soon and I am getting worried hers has not arrived...it has been 10 weeks and we are leaving July 7)

Those are some cool rooms there Rob...I did some of the phone service to the resorts and had a few tours of the newly finished rooms...They also have a great indoor waterpark thats open year round.

I believe it recently went into effect, but yes, we now even need passports to visit Canada and Mexico. At roughly $100 each, for some of us, that bites!

ZXW, if you're having problems with your daughter's passport, contact your Congressman or Senator - that's one of the things they're supposed to help with. "Hey mon", have a GREAT vacation!

The Finger Lakes region of New York isn't far, and there's a lot to see and do: water falls, the lakes, of course, Curtiss Air Museum, Corning Glass, et cetera. One I'd definitely re-visit is situated on the shores of Seneca Lake. Watkins Glen, NY has not only the race track above the town for those of you into that (I didn't go see it.), in the town proper is a car museum (I did go see that! It was interesting to learn that races used to run through the town.), and lots of antique shops to browse. Plus, there's a beautiful, amazing gorge to trek! (Yep, I did!)

The Thousand Islands of New York or Canada, on the St. Lawrence River are a bit farther, but easy to get to - straight up I-81. If you are looking for a romantic spot (Heart/Hart Island and Boldt Castle. A man built a Bavarian-type Castle and shaped Hart island into a Heart for his wife...but stopped all construction on the castle upon her death.), or are into fishing (The Pike and Muskie are HUGE!), this is definitely where you want to go. Taking the boat tours around the Islands and seeing how the Kellogg's "rough it"

in the Summer was always a treat the several times I visited there. The earlier in the season you go, say June, the less crowded and cooler it is, and there are no mosquitos. July is still "okay", and August, never mind! There was mention of rum-runners during prohibition, pirates once upon a time, and even the Skull and Crossbones Society. The Canadian side was much less expensive - the one place I stayed at there had a view of the bridge in the distance, and seeing the ships going by - on the St. Lawrence Seaway -

was way cool! Also, the proprietors told me if I saved all receipts that I'd be able to get a refund of certain taxes. I did so, and also found that way cool.

Oh Yeah, Thanks Donna - I forgot about the Finger Lakes - fantastic area especially if you like to sample wines. There are soooooo many winneries up around the lakes.

I really liked the ones on the West side of Seneca because they didn't charge you anything for tasting, but the ones on the East were also good.

I can't read your link, and no, I can't verify anything, but I recall hearing/reading that we now need a passport for all border crossings, and that they cost approximately $100.

Edit: OKAY, I finally found the info at travel.state.gov. As of January 23, 2007 they are required for air/sea travel from anywhere in the Western Hemisphere, except for U.S. territories, if I read it all correctly... However, as of January 01, 2008, passports will be required for all border crossings, such as driving to and from Canada or Mexico.

I think passports for border crossings begin in January. Anywhere else (except maybe as part of a cruise) is now.
