Attention Metalheads!

Post by ToonaRockGuy »

Okay, I hope I don't get flamed for this...(And Ron, if this is inappropriate, I'm sorry...)

Most of you know that I work at Rocky 104.9FM, and we appreciate all of your support! But we need your help!

We have started a new feature at Rocky, called "Mandatory Metal"! it runs at 10pm every weeknight, and it features METAL. You know, REAL METAL. But we need your help. We'd like all you metalheads to listen and give us suggestions on what to play. We plan on playing stuff (or are already playing music) from bands like Slayer, Killswitch Engage, Nile, Damageplan, Napalm Death, old Metallica, Pantera, Puya, well, you get the idea.

We are inviting the metal public to visit our site and let us know what you want to hear. This is your chance to help us and get the metal you want on the air.

So please give us your input, and try to be positive, we are just beginning, and your suggestions will help us get the music we need. We are only playing a couple songs a night right now, but if the demand gets huge, we'll blow it up into a full 30-minute show, and we may get some local metal acts in on it as well. Just head to www.rocky1049.com for more info.

Thanks again, and rock on.
Dood...

what nights and what time slot are you running your metal show? I work at 105.5 WCHX of Lewistown, and I am starting a heavier show as well. My slot will be from 7-12pm. We are a classic rock station and we are looking to revolutionize the rock listeners in our area. It's great to rock out the community. Rock em' hard!

Good deal! My late night showcase has not had a date set yet, but we still rock out through the day, especially Christina Scott on the morning drive! Again it's 105.5 WCHX

Here's a few bands to feature:

Motograter
40 Below Summer
40 Grit
Nevermore
Element Eighty
Lost Ledny(oops...shameless plug)
Spineshank

That should help out on some bands.

After my show kicks it's way into top gear, then I'm going full throttle into a local musician showcase very similar to The Professor's Back Yard Rocker. Not to copy or compete with you Jim, but Lewistown area does have alot of good, solid local talent and most people cannot tune into Q94 down here. If anything, you have mentored this idea for me personally and I only hope that I can host the show to the standard that you have set.

Those are all cool Metal bands, but don't forget the very overlooked and underappreciated Stoner Metal genre:

Kyuss
Sleep
Fu Manchu
Corrosion of Conforminity
Monster Magnet

And Opeth, Xentrix, Whiplash, (greatest Thrash band from the 80's no one knows about), Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Moonspell, the Gathering, Diamond Head, Broken Hope, Entombed, and the greatest Death Metal band of them all: Athiest. (I always have to plug those guys when a Metal thread comes up. :D )

some of Jason Newsted's pre-Metallica stuff with Flotsam and Jetsam is always good - they did a killer version of Saturday Night's Alright for Fightin, and of course their original stuff is kickin'.....

heck - you could even bust into some Samson, Manowar, Metal Church, Saxon, Celtic Frost, Sacred Reich.... And Armored Saint is a must! John Bush kicks ass!

the J's main votes definitely second the calls for Anthrax, Testament, Exodus, early Metallica (tho you can hear that on quite a few of stations anymore - 20 years later!! :P ), Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio (I think that counts, as long as it's not just Rainbow in the Dark), early Queensryche.....

Gotta tune this in!! YEAH BABY!!!!
You better call me a doctor - feelin' no pain!

Ask 313. He knows SO much about metal, especially the early stuff, and local stuff. I'm telling you, the guy is just scary how much he knows. I used to buy a record, play it to death, memorize the liner notes, all that, but that was 20 years and a lot of kind bud ago... Todd still has all that old stuff playing in his head!------>JMS

I would love to hear some prgressive music on the radio waves. Here's a very breif list of who i think should be heard- Dream Theater (of course!), Liquid Tension, King's X, Planet X, Symphony X, Majesty, Ring of Fire, Pagan's Mind, maybe some Nightwish, and the list goes on...

True metal and progressive music is definitely lacking on the waves. All this repetitive pop rock crap on the radio makes me sick.

I hope i dont get mugged for this one, but it wouldn't be bad to hear some shred like Vai, Satch, or Malmsteen on the radio.

All kinetic, no potential.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I will definately use most of them anyway. We're in the process of re-formatting, and changing selections, ordering cd's, etc. We are starting to play Judist Priest, which is a big step forward for our classic rock station. I can't wait to rock out on Black Sabbath, and much more. It's a shame the majority of you guys are located in the Altoona, Johnstown area, etc., because I want to bring in various co-host to get full rock knowledge and listener participation.

Hey all, want to thank you for all your replies and the positive vibe that this thread is generating. I showed my boss this thread, and his general response was "Holy Crap, this thing is gonna be big!!"

We have taken all your suggestions to heart, now the next step for us is to get some of this stuff in our system. Your continued input and support is valuable beyond words to us. Thanks again, we really appreciate it! We'll keep you updated with how the show grows, and let you know when we open it up to local bands!

A "local" artist that you could include NOW is a guy named DC Cooper. He has about 5 national releases, including his stint with Progressive Metallers Royal Hunt (1995 to 1998), his solo CD (1999) and his newest band Silent Force (CDs titled "Empire of the Future" and "Infatuator" were both released in early 2000s)

In case you haven't heard of this guy, he hails from Bedford County, played in several local bands (Ex-Caliber) before joining joining successful Pittsburgh bands (Toast and Tung Bandits). When Rob Halford left the mighty J. Priest, Cooper almost got that job, but instead ended up with Royal Hunt. If you listen to his latest Silent Force CD, you'll see why he was a finalist for the Priest job. While in Royal Hunt, he was voted the top male vocalist for 2 straight years in Euro Metal magazine called "Burrn", finishing ahead of guys like Geoff Tate and Bruce Dickinson.

I would love to see him get some local exposure. I think it's a shame that a guy so successful internationally isn't even known around here. Check out his stuff... very good.
