Namely, shut down gasoline production under the guise of maintenance and create a gas shortage. The free market traders freak out and unleaded gets bid up on the open market. I just didn't think I'd have to explain it in so much detail.

See what happens when beliefs get in the way of facts?
I was too busy ranting to get your point.

That's funny. I mean, yeah, you do . At least for me anyhow. lol

I resolved quite some time ago to stop purchasing all Exxon/Mobil fuel. While I haven't harmed their record-breaking profits in the slightest, if enough consumers did the same, who knows?

I seen something in Monday's Altoona Mirror about gas could hit $3.50 a gallon this summer. If regular hits that high, think of what diesel fuel will be. So much for that raise in min wage.

I am waiting for the truckers to do something also. If they would all go on strike; there would be some major problems in this country .... These gas prices are ridiculous. I blame Bush .......

In reality, its not big oil or politicians driving up gas prices this time, its the refining companies*. The rotten bastards shut too many refineries down for maintenance a few months back and a few others went offline unexpectedly, so gas supplies dropped.

Unfortunately, there is no incentive for these companies to build new refineries. It is extremely expensive and between the environmentalists and the "not in my backyard" crowd, there has not been a new refinery built in the U.S. in 31 years. Until a few years ago, there was no profit in it either.

*some refineries are owned by companies perceived as "oil companies".
Then I say we all chip in and build a refinery here in Central Pennsylvania.

Read sarcasm.

I'm sick of all the excuses for their record setting profits ! "Things are so bad we keep making more and more money. We just can't help it that all of these things go wrong, and we just have to raise prices. Really , It's not our fault. And when things are going well......We have to raise prices because we have to be ready for something to go wrong. "

If anyone believes their spin, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I can sell you cheap.
If you dropped the sarcasm, we would all be multimillionares.

If we all could chip in and fight the environmentalists and governmental regulators, could you imagine the wealth we could create here in central Pa. with the first refinery in 30 years?

I've been watching this topic and find it interesting, but really didn't want to get involved, but then I figured - Oh what the fuck!!

I don't agree (completely) that performing an illegal act would be a good idea, but it is an interesting concept.

Skatetoad is right - it wouldn't hurt the big oil companies - it would hurt the local owners.

Paul, I don't know why you have such a hard-on for SUV drivers. I guess I am one of the idiots that you were talking about. I have several reasons for owning the vehicle that I have (and I don't feel I have to justify it to anyone), but I will say that I rode my bike to work today and figured I saved myself $4.00 just for today!!

And, correct me if I'm wrong about this one: I believe that Quick Fill (bottom of old rte 22 going into Duncansville) is one of the only local gas stations that has "American Made" gasoline - and supposedly they are 4 cents cheaper per gallon right now ($3.05).

Also, I'm sure it wasn't a "legal" (or at least ethical) activity at the time, but the Boston Tea Party sure did make a difference in this country's history!!!

Rather than build an oil refinery, how about a future-oriented enterprise? Possibly an ethanol plant or even some sort of bio or other alternative fuel refinery/plant - one that can be used with OR, in the place of gasoline. It would bring jobs and capital to the area and the person, or those people who owned it, would make lots of money. Long-term, EVERYONE would save $$$ purchasing less expensive fuel.

IMO, .04¢ less a gallon for AMERICAN-made gasoline is a pitiful joke. Short-term in this country, something akin to a good ol' fashioned "Tea Party" is overdue. :D Of course, those participating would most likely be deemed "Unlawful Enemy Combatants".

Thats got nothing to do with oil, but I thought it was catchy so I posted it.

I don't know who posted it, but just not using the gas is really the only way to help alleviate the problem. As prices go up, people are going to have to conserve anyway, at least us poorer folk.

Bicycling, carpooling, walking, whatever. Just conserve.

However, I do feel that something needs to be done by all Americans to show our distaste. I'm tired of taking out a loan just to cut my grass.

Why not have a "Call Off Work Day?" Nobody likes work anyway, and if everybody did it, maybe someone would get the message. I can't make it to work because I can't afford the gas to get there---you get the idea.

Tom, you need to reread my original post before posting a reply. If you saw, the "idiots" I was referring to are the people who buy gas-guzzling V8 monstrosities who have no need for them other than to drive down to the mall. I'm a musician; you're a musician. A lot of people on this site are musicians. That affects our decisions when it comes to vehicle purchases. A two-door Chevy Cavalier isn't going to cut it for a lot of us. I understand if someone needs to purchase a bigger vehicle to haul equipment, for their job, to haul a trailer, etc. I almost bought a small SUV last fall when I was looking for a new vehicle, but I found something that suited my needs better. I can't drive down the road and see who drives a large vehicle, then criticize them. I don't know why they bought those vehicles, so I can't say anything. I do know a lot of people in my life who own huge vehicles who have no need for them. That's fine. You should be free to purchase what ever you want. I'm a libertarian. I just get a little irrate by being a po commuter student and then hearing some yuppie bitch about how much it costs to fill up his Humvee.
