Depends on your perspective, I guess. The music scene in central Pennsylvania is just fine from where I'm standing. Are there roadblocks? Sure, but, as the saying goes, nothing worth having comes easy.

Case in point, we were off this weekend because of a club closing. No paycheck for us this week and it's sometimes tough filling a date at the last minute. Sucks, but it's reality. Just keep your eyes forward and stay positive. A negative point of view will, in most cases, produce a negatiuve result.

(I sound like a ƒü©king motivational speaker or something ...)

I love it. The music scene is what you make of it. Finding serious musicians, writing, recording, booking, travelling, all can be a pain in the ass or it can be fun. Maybe you need to take a break from it. Get a fresh perspective, or a new hobby. If you're in it to get rich and famous, give up hope now.

I really wish the original poster hadn't been so vague. I did a little post search, and I would guess he thinks the scene sucks because he can't find musicians to play with. But I don't really know.

Like Rob said, from where I'm standing the scene doesn't suck. But I have a band, and we aren't having any problems getting successfull shows, but we've been at it for over a year.

I don't remember ever saying the scene sucked, even when things weren't going as well for me.

I havn't really spent a major amount of time dealing with scenes in other areas, so I can't really say for sure how they stack up.

I do get the feeling that there are probably far better original music scenes elsewhere in the country. But if you believe in your music, and you stick to it, you'll make it work.

I really do empathize with you, but as Sanchez said....it really is what you make of it and sometimes it just takes time and persistence.

I am editing in responce to Meyatch.

We're lucky because we are established somewhat in the area.

I think it was August 2005 or 2006. Rolling Stone Magazine gave State College honorable mention in best music scenes across America.

That's pretty darn cool. Proud to be a part of that in some small part.

It was vague because I wanted some different opinions... I've been at this for awhile and it's not about the $$$. (Never really made much to speak of nor do I care!!) Or anything else. I like to do everything involve in the "process" of being in a band.... I guess I like to "move forward" when others like to "stagnate" or "just be" for the sake of being...

I was going to go on this big rant and rave.... But I won't....

Maybe, I should and will step away for awhile... (Maybe it's me???)

Maybe you do need to step away, or maybe you need to find some new people to jam with.

There are a ton of people out there who Know how to play well, that doesn't entitle them to shit. Some of these virtuoso's you'll see looking for new projects every month because they're so good. Have fun and compromise with your bandmates. I'm full of ideas and sometimes (often) they're shit ideas, but I don't think so at first, I depend on the other guys in the band to let me know and vice-versa. If you can't compromise, it's definitely you, and maybe a solo acoustic show is best for you. If it's not you, just relax and have fun.

I'm the "king" of compromise... (I don't care what we play, where we play or how we play it. Just as long as it works for what we are doing. And that we move forward in what we are doing...) And I am NOT a solo guy. I'm not the greatest at anything. I can get the job done and I like having fun doing it. I encourage people I play with to tell me my flaws. Only makes me and anyone I'm playing with better. Plus, if I tell you I'm going to do something... Guess what, I do it!!! And if I can't, I won't take on the task. Someone else might know better... (All for one and one for all, ya know!) I guess I do need to find some new band mates...

i think that the music scene is a booming thing although it seems to be hard for bands to find drummers...i have seen alot of band changes and bands taking steps backwards but i have also seen bands move forward...you just have to bust your ass if you dont want to stay in one place...book new shows everywhere all the time...see new crowds promote promote promote...its hard work and that sucks but its life...hope all works out for you...

It's why I left,and I'm glad I did because I found people who want to do this just as much as I do.
Because It's never been about the money,never has been.
But I get to go all over the place to do it.
If it was about the cash,I would have left the game years ago.

Not to get all philosophical or anything (that's Paul's job), but is there really a "scene" at all? Or just hundreds of individual stories?

It's amazing how many different ways people find to apply their musical talents in such a small area. What's satisfying and rewarding for one person might be intolerable for the next. If you don't like the view from where you're sitting, shake your personal scenery up a bit.

For the most part, the music scene doesn't suck. There are lots of bands playing and lots of places to play. If you're willing to take some sacrifices and put up with some of the crap that gets dished out to most of the people booking the bands...go for it.

But on the dark side of things.....

If you're not old enough to remember that bands made about the same amount 20-25 years ago as they do now, I guess any musician would say the local music scene is great provided you're getting paid to perform these days. I paid for half of my education by playing in bands. I believe the average weeknight was around $180 in the late 70's early 80's and I remember the average was $240 for a weekend job. I've been playing bass in bands since I was 14 years old and I've seen a decline in the way clubs owners treat band members. I did the booking for my band when I was 18 years old so I know what it's like to explain to a club owner that a band member is not really making $20/hr to play and have fun (ya know....explain about the gear expenses, travel, setup and practice time). These days it seems like getting $80-$100 a night for each band member is even more difficult than ever and you have to make the same pleadings. It is a completely different club scene these days. Clubs and bars don't have built in crowds and the bands need to draw the people in.

Turning the guns on some of the more seasoned (...polite for older) musicians: I've seen some great musicians resort to not playing any longer for these reasons but some have adapted and are still doing some wood shedding. I think I'm becoming the former.....I'm starting to become sick and tired!

Groups like Rush and Yes would have never made good bar bands in this area.

I guess "scene" was the wrong word.... How about "people" and "attitude" toward what needs to be done to actually make a band function. I guess if I would have put it that way it would made a difference in my statement. (Correct??) And yes I understand all the "up's and down's" of the business. I've been thru it many times. I guess this time I just said to my self, "Self, when is enough, enough?!?" But, it's tough to do that when I love to do what I do... Ya know... And from what I'm getting from you all. Is that it's not really all that bad out there if I just get away from the "situation" that I'm in now. Go try to be something somewhere else than this "one horse" town that I'm in.... I still have some stuff to consider but I truly thank you all for your opinions....

I quit playing "the scene" because I thought to myself "Enough is enough"
I got sick of playing covers, sick of spending my weekends in crappy little bars in J-town, and really sick of dealing with asshole club owners that try to screw you no matter what. I quit for a year got my head in the right place. Just when I started to get the itch to jam again, the perfect opportunity fell in my lap. Now I am active with a new band where the situation really suits me. I don't play covers, I get to play brutal metal, and we are actually releasing a disc with real distribution. If we ever do play live it won't be in a bar. It will most likely be at a Metal fest where our music will be appreciated. Not to say that a lot of people around here wouldn't like what we do but it makes no sense to me to play a show where every metalhead in J-town that we know is there and we're playing to 50 people and losing money. I'd rather spend my money on going to see a national act that I really like or buy a sack of good green. Besides I hate hauling equipment around but that's just me. I did what was right for me and now I'm happy. The point I'm trying to make is you just have to do what makes you happy. If that means moving, taking a break, or just trying something new, then you gotta do what you gotta do.
Just make sure it's for the right reasons.

OMG YES!!!!!! i've been tired for years...... there was a post on another web site about the music scene in central pa, it was some one trying to get there point across, BUT it was an attack instead and it put all involved on the defensive, but there was some truth in it all in all.
