Ok...I think MTV ripped off LOST LEDNY'S intro song(LOST)...track 1. Now hear me out before you think this is just publicity and that I'm crazy. Our drummer's uncle lives in California. Last summer this uncle took 10 cd's back to Cali with him to distribute to know producers and such. The uncle is a "B" movie actor or some crap like that. Anyway, this uncle is friends with the producer of the Super Bowl's half time show. As we all know...MTV produces the half time show. So this leads me to believe that the producer does have a copy of LOST LEDNY'S cd. So that also means MTV has access to that cd. Ok, for all of you MTV junkies...next time the "Newlyweds" show is on, wait until the credits roll and all of that stuff is finished. Watch the whole time during the credits....now listen for the instrumental hum and weird church like sounds. Now if you have LOST LEDNY'S cd, place it into your player and play TRACK 1. Call me crazy, but they are one in the same. LEDNY'S cd came out before "Newlyweds" did. Here's the bad part...if it is the track...LEDNY isn't collecting.

Assuming you have your material copywritten, can't you do anything legally? I know you would probably like to be paid but even recognition would be a great promotional tool. Good luck with this issue and keep us all posted on the matter, I know you drew my attention!

Jaybird, more than likely you would never be able to collect any royalties. Not because the material isn't Lost Ledney's, but your description makes it sound like there are no words or transcribable music in the clip, just instrumental hum and weird sounds. If so, the clip may not qualify legally as a copyrightable song. That may also be one reason why MTV is using it.
I personally wish you could get money from MTV, but I wouldn't spend any money on lawyers or anything.

I see a lot of misunderstanding about copyrights in the forums, but the most important thing to remember is that if you write down or record a song, it is automatically copyrighted. You don't have to do anything else. Registering with the US copyright office will make sure that you have proof of the date of the material for litigation, but it is not necessary to maintain the rights to your material.Chevelle7982 wrote:Assuming you have your material copywritten, can't you do anything legally?

Ron, thanks for that piece of useful information. I myself did not know that. I have worried several times about the same situation possibly happening. I've had friends, etc., take my cd and then distribute the material to many other sources and always felt paranoid about it. Not because I want paid, but I would hate to have someone steal my material that I have put forth my life for. I guess being young means that there is still alot more to learn about it! Ha Ha!

Well I just got done watching the "Newlyweds" at 4:00. I sat through the whole episode just so I could record the ending credits. The LOST LEDNY intro in full is about 1:30. The actual part I'm concerned is only about 2 seconds worth. The "Newlyweds" end credit humming and such is also about 2 seconds worth. Hmmm...strange!? It just seems so odd that two people in this world (LOST LEDNY & MTV) could have the same exact material. I sent MTV an e-mail asking what the end credit humming is from: a song, just an instrumental made for the end credits, etc. No response as of yet.
