Yeah dude go for it. Where does EMO come from?

Actually, to be honest, even though I'm not keen on Rhoads tone, knocking the
guy is really more of a joke. I think his technique was incredible and I liked that
he brought the Classical modes, etc. into rock (Prog Rock certainly used it,
as did Blackmore, but as far as actual "metal", I'd say Rhoads did more than
anyone).

While it's not my style and such I certainly respect the guy and his contributions
immensely. That his life was cut short the way it was is really one of music's
great tragedies.

I love the Stones, but that Keith has done all he has and lives but someone as
decent and straightforward as Rhoads died the way he did is a strange irony.

All of that being said, I'm sure some Randy tone-knocking will arise again in the future.

What's this doing on an emo thread? It's cool anyway
Ya, Jake Lee was never going to win, was he? The guy after the guy. No
chance. But, he was, and is, a great guitarist (Great tone on the Badlands
albums as well. Hm.).

What would be the precursor of E.M.O.? Hüsker Du? THEY were great, as
was Sugar (Both Bob Mould bands). Buzzsaw guitars in short, awesome "pop" tunes.

Goo Goo Dolls? First few albums were cool, then they started singing about
angels and garbage. I dunno WHAT happened there. First single "Kick Yer Ass
With A Baseball Bat". Nowadays, they're more akin to "Rainbows and Butterflies".

The Cure? Didn't like them back in the day at all but have more of an appreciation
now.

Inspired by the softer side of Saxon maybe?

Its worse than that. He was the guy between the guys. Between Randy and Zakk. Two highly touted players. He's kinda like the 'Jan' of the Brady sisters.

Trace Emo back to Ian Mackaye and minor threat.
Emo meaning emotional, whatever everything could be Emo.
To me it's just a bunch of pussies.
I guess that's how punk rock was viewed when it first hit the scene, but at least those pussies would throw down. These little bitches will just write a nasty blog on myspace about you. To each his own but don't cry on my shoulder about your problems, I've got enough shit to deal with.

Buy me a bottle of Beefeater and I'll tell ya how I really feel.

Maybe I'm a bit confused here. What exactly is emo music? Is it a real style of music or a fashion trend? And then what's the difference between emo and screamo? I have a CD by a band called Emery that I think is classified as "emo." Dashboard Confessional is emo, correct? What is "emo" to me just sounds like a more commercial version of a lot of indie music. I really can't handle a lot of it, because the vocalists seem to sing purposefully sharp, but I guess to each his or her own.

I definitely agree about the Goo Goo Dolls. Superstar Carwash was such a great album. Then they just got a little too commercial for me.

I liked Rhoades tone, and I'm not really much of a Marshall guy. I think that the recordings left a lot to be desired - because as Chad said, the production on those first couple of early Ozzy albums wasn't all that great, especially considering that production values were becoming pretty good by the early 80s - and his tone suffered because of it. It's kind of funny how the tones of guitar players and bass players changed in heavier music if you compare Rhoades with the newer stuff. Rhoades's tone was very midrange-oriented with not a whole lot of gain, and Bob Daisley's bass tone was fat and Ampegish. Now, guitarist run insane amounts of gain and a scooped sound, where the bass players are going more for a high end sizzle and a more SWRish sound just to cut through. I am seeing a shift though back to the lighter gain, more Marshall sound with some of the newer bands coming out.

Ya, I even liked Boy Named Goo a lot. But "Hold Me Up" and S.S.C.W. are
so much looser, and less produced sounding. Lot of S.S.C.W. sounds like
The Replacements (Westerberg even co-wrote "We Are the Normal").

Now they seem bent on Adult Contemporary sales. Too bad.

Indeed, I thought that Dizzy Up the Girl had some solid tracks on it, but after that, they got a little commercial for me. There's nothing wrong with taking a different direction, but I still like the "midcareer" stuff, when they weren't as snotty as Jed, but they weren't as produced as Gutterflower.

I'm also disappoitned that Rzenik doesn't play a lot of the guitar parts anymore, because I've always liked his playing.

Brian,

It's 20+ years later and you still just "want to be with hot chics and
drive around in an IROC".

Granted...sounds like a snappy enough idea...I'm just sayin'.

Sometimes in a week, the old sKool quotes pour forth like the sweet wine of the gods, and I must choose which one gets the coveted spot in my signature. I think that we should petition Ron for longer signatures. :D

yes....yes I do. Hot chicks and an IROC. Thats still the goal. And playing to a crowd. Thats important to me too.

as far as EMO goes...eh...like EVERY genre, there's some I like and some I don't. I LISTEN to what I like, but I PLAY what puts asses in seats. If I was forced to choose, I'd rather play EMO to a thousand screaming fags in girl's jeans and go home to my mansion with a pool then play speed metal for my sister in the living room of my mom's double-wide. Think of that as a buddhist parable, somewhere in there you can find a metaphor for hot chicks and an IROC...metaphorically speaking. Although I'm pretty sure my sister's not the hot chick and the double-wide isn't the IROC

Agreed. Mebbe he's just too busy doin' interview to be bothered.

Really like their drummer though. Plays cool stuff in that context.

I believe you meant to say "play speed metal for my double-wide girlfriend in the living room of my stepmother's mobile home"

The origins of Emo, in my opinion, can be traced to, and fully blamed on, one man:

Morrissey.

Okay, fair enough. His voice can be a bit much and the whole moody-thing
is tough to tolerate, but Johnny Marr is/was really cool.
