The Jaggerz from Pgh early 70's with their hit "The Rapper". Donnie Iris came out of that band. Also my understanding that Tommy James & Shondells from Harrisburg. Lou Christie, The Marcels and others made it as headliners.

I think they were from Maryland. Can't forget Paul Gilbert and Nick Cantanese, the bands they are in or were in may not be from Pa,but who cares, they made it.

Todd Rundgren was from the Philadelphia area. His first breakthrough band from the late 60's, The Nazz, featured Altoona's Thom Mooney on drums.

Pennsylvania has actually had a good number of bands and artists that made it as far as getting signed. As far as hitting it big once they were signed, there have been a few. Todd Rundgren, Poison, Fuel, Breaking Benjamin, Donnie Iris/The Jaggerz, Rusted Root, The Hooters, Live, the late Jim Croce, Cinderella, Lou Christie, The Marcels and Bobby Vinton were among the biggest.

Tommy James himself actually was from Dayton, Ohio. After his original Shondells dissolved, he got his break in Pittsburgh, when "Hanky Panky" started getting played at local dances, and he wound up recruiting a Pittsburgh band, the Raconteurs, to become the new Shondells.

Depending on your definition of making it big, both The Badlees and The Clarks got substantial radio play while they were signed in the 90's (The Clarks actually sold more albums after they left Mercury Records than when they were signed with them). Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers tasted the limelight briefly with "I'm Not Your Man." Billy Price used to sing with guitar legend Roy Buchanan. Although they never scored a huge hit, Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers have appeared with Bruce Springsteen, and Norman Nardini has appeared with Bon Jovi. Norman's old band, Diamond Reo, had some minor hits in the 70's. There's more, depending on how deep you want to dig.

Britney Fox was actually formed by 2 original members of Cinderella. Michael Kelly Smith and Tony Destra. They were replaced with Jeff Labar and Fred Coury after Night Songs had been recorded. (Interesting fact... Fred turned down a slot as Ozzy's drummer to join Cinderella) I have the pre night songs demos with the 2 guys from Britney on it.
The person below me enjoys a good spanking.

• And We Danced
• Day By Day
• Where Do The Children Go
• Satellite

There were others not quite worth mentioning but The Hooters were able to pull a couple of noted hits out of their collective a$$es ...

Rock on, Pa. bands ...

Anti Flag certainly does suck!!!! They even sucked before they made it.

Also on the punk side. Digger sorta made it. Anyone remember them or am I the only one.

They had a good song called "I want my hat back."

The Raspberries...at least one member from Johnstown
Joey Covington, former drummer for Hot Tuna and sometimes Jefferson Airplane AND Jefferson Starship, even co-wrote some of their songs including 'Pretty As You Feel' and 'With Your Love', from East Conamagh section of Johnstown.
Papa John Creach, electric violinist, also from Jefferson Starship, from Beaver Falls.
