We cover some 80s pop/hair/whatever-you-wanna-call-it metal and we cover some modern/nu/alt/whatever-you-wanna-call-it metal.

As far as technicality in the music, the 80s stuff has the blazing guitar solos and stratosphere falsetto vocals, but I find the modern stuff to be much more rythmnically challenging. Some of that stuff (i.e. Disturbed, Godsmack, Pantera) is syncopated as hell! And I've spent a lot of time in the woodshed nailing down the pockets on a lot of it. Often times the 80s stuff just calls on me to throw down a straight 8th note pulse. I'm not saying that either one is superior to the other, but every playing situation that I've ever been in, despite the style of music, has challenged me in one way or another.

May I suggest Mista Bone from Great White and Line Em Up from Dangerous Toys as songs from hair metal bands that use syncopation? I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of any at the moment. The Dangerous Toys song is cool because not only are all the guitars syncopated, but the lead vocal as well.

Just as a fun fact, Distubed's guitarist was actually in a hair metal band in Chicago before helping to form Disturbed.

I love Great White. I always have said that the only thing worse about them always being known for that club fire is them always being known for that Ian Hunter cover, because their stuff killed.

Well, these guys wore stripy shirts and teased their hair for the same reason I did for a short time: At the time, that's what you did. I assure everyone, there will come a day you will look at band pictures and laugh. You'll look silly, but it's part of the deal of being a working band. It evolves. Someday, sleeve tattoos will be as passe' as painter hats or JAMZ pants. But I remember a time when if you didn't have hair beyond your shoulders, you were considered a weekend warrior, and didn't get an audition. You do what it takes to compete.
Now if somebody would just make backfat fashionable, I could have a career rebirth, and start nailing unwed mothers again. ---->JMS

My favs are Ratt & Dokken but I could also go with just about any band listed on Victor's list as well. Definitely some of the best guitar work came from this era hands down. Don't get me wrong though, I really dig some new stuff out there too. You wouldn't know it from their music but that guitarist from Staind, Mike something or other, is a huge shredder and took lessons from Tony MacAlpine. I also thought that the Darkness was going to bring back some of that 80's style but I think people just didn't take them seriously. When I heard their first release I was diggin' it until I saw the video. Enough said.

With a capital "Z" AND a vanity plate that says "I ROCK"!!!!!!!

Yoy. Ya know, I was a teenager in early the 80s...and even then, if I would'a
seen this (and I may have, but have purged from memory) I would've said
"What a dork".

But, ya know there would'a been some Poison blaring out of the thing!

Little hint for the IROC... those little rainbow stickers everybody had in their back window in 1982? Those mean a totally different thing now. And 8-tracks are a bitch to find at National Record Mart. And so is National Record Mart. 8) ---->JMS

Right now there a dozen or so guys scrambling to find razorblades for some
sticker-scrapin' and know why people have stopped asking why they don't
have a girlfriend.

Some really great stuff listed here that brings back alot of great memories for me. I'll definitely have to consider making Clearfield this year for Quiet Riot and Skid Row. I've seen QR several times and they do put on a pretty good show. (even though Kevin's look reminds me of a flaming Rod Stewart)

Also looking forward to seeing a reunited Ratt on the Poison tour this summer. Great White was said to be the 3rd band on the bill but I've heard conflicting statements on that one.

best 80's hair band

Post by lynch1 »

I would have to say Dokken. Lynch is the one that really made me stand up and go "Wow, look at that guy's playing!!!" I played before I heard him, but he inspired me to get very serious. Iron Maiden is not a hair band, they are definitely a metal band. I loved Victor Synn's list. He even brought up some bands that I almost forgot about. It is good to see some good metal coming back. I miss the 80's because the players were good, the music was good, the bands had appeal. When Nirvana came out I stopped listening to new music all together, I hated that grunge garbage. Then bands like Creed and Godsmack came out and I started listening again, but where are the guitar solos? These guys could write some awesome, aggressive riffs, but no solos in the songs!! The bands out now have to scream or bark, that I don't get at all. Musically it is awesome, reminds me of old techno metal like Fates Warning, Dream Theatre, etc, but then they start that screaming crap. If I could get the music and eliminate the vocals I would love it. I guess I'm getting off the subject. So again, Dokken I would have to say is the best hair band of the 80's.

I think that my favorite band out of the the era would be Extreme. As others have pointed out, they really weren't "Hair Metal" (the same could be said of other mislabelled bands such as Saigon Kick)....
Saigon Kick had some seriously cool stuff but were known for their ballad...
forget what it was called. There was a lot more to them and they put
a pretty good variety of things on their albums. Not comparing the two but their song "Chanel" could be akin to "Big Bad Bill Is Sweet William Now"
on Diver Down, plus, in legendary
fashion, the guitar player and singer didn't like each other. I have no doubt
it was the singer's fault, just a'cause it always is.

ANYWAY, they do get lumped in with the "Warrants" and it's pretty unfair.

Oh...no Rough Cutt fans out there, eh? Nah, me neither...BUT Amir Derahk
was one of their guitarist and he does some pretty interesting guitar synth stuff
with Orgy.

The song was "Love Is On The Way", from the album "The Lizard". They also had a minor hit with "All I Want Is You" off the same record.
