Where have all the venues gone?

Post by bsaller »

Someone please enlighten me!
I called Driller's Lounge and there phone has been disconnected. Their website states"Driller's and The Kay Arena are not closing" Huh?
I talked with Anthony at The Saloon in State College several weeks ago.
Said he was having a meeting with his boss( Jennifer@ Dante's INC. and to call him next week. Alsa nobody answers the phone day or night, anyday of the week. There also have been 3 venues in the Hagerstown area that have had there phones dis-connected.
"Then there's Burgi's which isn't closing, but is For Sale"
Does this have anything to do with "spring fever?"

Maybe everyone is quitting drinking and stopped going to the clubs?

I know how hard it is for bar owners. Increasing liability insurance costs, continual threats of law suits, increased min. wage issues, increase fuel costs, etc, kill the business whose customers argue about paying higher prices for drinks, paying cover charges for entertainment, or tipping to help offset the costs of having a great bartender (if a bartender can't make money, they won't stay). I think a lot of owners do it because they enjoy it...but after awhile the burn out factor sets in. If you keep doing a job without seeing a reward or benefit, no matter how much you enjoy it, you get burnt out. I still enjoy helping my husband with his bar.

Do they still have the ceramic tile floor and the corner stage in the basement?

Many venues have either closed, stopped having bands for one reason or another, or cut back on entertainment. It keeps getting more difficult to get places to play.

As far as Driller's. They never return phone calls anyway and nobody ever answers the phone there at anytime. It was not that way when they first opened. It is a nice place with a nice stage and the pay was good. Not long after they opened, they started cutting the band money and cancelling gigs. They seem to go through lots of different management and somebody will book the bands and then not tell anybody who is booked. We showed up there once and the previous manager never told anybody we were booked and we were not advertised. We did play but hardly anybody was there and then all our other gigs were cancelled. Several other bands went through the same thing.

It's a tough business. You gotta scratch & claw & be persistent. Anymore, getting a gig is like trying to find a frickin' needle in a haystack. But as our singer/bass player always says, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease". Even so, it seems our profession these days is a dying art form. Many people(talented musicians) have backed away from it to face reality. There's just too many x-factors & I understand that. But if you're gonna do it, you gotta go at it like your life depends on it. I know 'cause mine does.

You see what happens when I leave town? J/k...that really sucks. I've had some really good times playing the crowbar and the saloon. Those venues were off the hook! I've never played Burgi's but, seen a lot of bands play there. At least you still have Aldos, City Limits, and 4D's in Altoona. Not sure what there is in SC right now tho.

Kay Arena is selling the ARENA part. Word has it that UPS is going to be buying it as their new Indiana warehouse. Driller's is supposed to stay open though. And...YES...they suck at returning phone calls.

The Saloon is still going strong, and the bar scene in State College is as strong as ever. With 40,000 students within walking distance to about 10 bars that offer live music, the music scene in State College is pretty much immuned to problems of recession, gas prices, DUI issues, etc. Unfortunately for bands SC is also probably one of the most competitive live music markets in PA, and almost all the bars do vertical booking, which makes it very difficult for a new band to get booked. So even when the venues are there its not always easy, but I think that helps separate the good bands from the not-so-good bands, which ultimately helps the music scene in general.

No doubt about it though, booking shows is the shittiest part of being in a band.

Amy Kay is moving down South to continue college and she also does pro circuit barrel racing. They have tried to make it work with rodeos and events at the arena, but have not had the best of luck.

OMG ... not another "gloom-and-doom-for-the-local-music-scene" thread ...

You must be referring to a different Driller's Bar in a different Kay Arena in a different Indiana, Pa. then, because we've been in their rotation for about two years now, we play there every 5-6 weeks and each time, the ƒü©king place is packed from front to back and the crowd keeps growing. At our show there a few weeks ago, before I identified myself as a band member, security tried to park me at the bottom of "Mount Drillers," down by the highway — they were running a shuttle bus up the hill to the facility for the patrons because there was no place to park up top.

Since we've been dealing with them, they've had ONE manager — Bubba. He's the only person we've ever dealt with there. If he doesn't answer (I actually just called him Thursday and he answered) he always calls back within 24 hours (maybe you have a bad phone number or something?).

As far as "cutting band money," we've NEVER been cut on money — EVER. As a matter of fact, we've actually received substantial increases in pay at each of our last two gigs.

Driller's is by far one of the most professionally run establishments we deal with.

We have had clubs that don't get back in touch so quickly with us (or at all) and, in most cases, it's a situation where either:

A) We haven't drawn real well there yet or,
B) Their schedule is full with bands that are drawing well and there's simply no room for new bands.

Just because a particular club isn't booking you doesn't mean they're closing. We've been trying to get into 4Ds for quite sometime to no avail, but I understand they're staying open anyway. :D

All I stated was that the number for Kay Arena has been disconected. I called Bubba on his line (412) ,but didn't get an answer. I see were you guys are scheduled next month...I think. The 724-465-5370 is not operational. If you guys have another number please let me know. :D

I agree with Rob. Drillers is a great place to play. We always have a good crowd as well and they are always in the mood to party. We have never been cut either. We look forward to playing there! :)

Great post ... these are the things all of us who do the bookings must consider before becoming frustrated. No one owes you a gig. You have to go get it and when you don't get it on the 17th try, try an 18th time. And a 19th. And a 20th.

This, I disagree with. The challenge of getting into a club and then keeping the club on your book and working to make the $$$ go up is one of the most rewarding parts of my role in our band. Hells yes ... The key is to not get frustrated and always remember, if Club A doesn't book you, Club B, Club C or Club D will.

I find my challenges elsewhere, like trying to convince the hot girls to show their boobs without also encouraging the ones who keep their boobs in their pants pockets...
