I know this is a guitar thread, but I can't resist talking rigs.
I play a 2000 Carvin LB75 into a BBE Bmax preamp, which drives a bridged QSC PLX1600 power amp, which in turn drives two Aguilar S 4x10 cabinets. I use two cabs on larger stages and only one on smaller stages and rooms. I also have in my rack a Korg DTR1000 tuner, Furman conditioner, and Shure wireless (which will be up for sale soon).
My future plan - which I've talked about here before - is to run a psuedo-switching system with dual preamps, a clean preamp and a dirty preamp, most likely a SansAmp RBI, for tube emulation. I ran into the problem of how to match the preamps' output gains to the house and power amp, then Sapo recommended a Rane rack mixer. Sometimes I wonder if I should upgrade from the BBE to something like a Demeter, but most sound guys seem to really like it, so I don't know if I should fix something that isn't broken.

Anything about equipment gets moved to tech!
My custom Gibson Flying V90 is sitting on the bench in favor of a PRS Custom 24. I also have a 1986 San Dimas Jackson Soloist (gig backup) and a rare 1976 Fender Starcaster.
This stock CU24 has the "factory" optional 3-way toggle with tone pull-switch for coil-split instead of the standard rotary switch.
I plug the PRS into my Vox-AC30, Boogie Mark I, II, II, IV, Rectifier, Marshall 1959, JCM2000, Fender Twin Rev....er, I mean into a Boss GT-8 modeling pre/FX floor processor.
Then its off to a 500W channel of a Peavey DPC1000 into a custom snakeskin Mojotone Bassman vertical 2-12 cabinet loaded with Celestion Century G12 neo speakers. The Peavey is mounted in the 6-space PA rack which sits neatly on the Bassman cab. The other 500W channel powers the vocal monitors.
We timed last week's 2:00AM tear-down/pack up at 16 minutes.

I run a squareneck Rogue Classic Spider resonator (very heavily modded, only the body is original) into a Shure SM-57 with the presence rolled off, another heavily modded maple-bodied squareneck straight to the board via it's onboard preamp & undersaddle (will switch to K&K Big shot soon), and Hohner Special 20 (w/ the occasional Lee Oskar) into whatever vocal mic ya got.-------->JMS

Indeed, Kevin. It's a quality preamp, very fast and clean. They also make a tube version, which I'd like to try also. It's a very transparent pre, so a prolevel bass sounds killer through it, and a $300 bass sounds like...well, a $300 bass through it.ToonaRockGuy wrote:Don't ditch the BBE gear, Paul. Robert swears by it, and he's got a pretty killer sound with his rig.
Everytime we play City Limits, Zilly always compliments my sound during soundcheck. The only thing I wish that the pre had was an output level for the DI. It's a post-EQ DI, and the BBEs are known for having insane amounts of gain - you can actually send them in to the company and they'll mod them for free because they have so much gain. It's real easy for me to clip a sound board.

Actually, we're starting to rehearse again after two years of nonrehearsal (I just laugh everytime I think of that). Rob's built a practice space, and I'm creating a mini-rig to put there. I have an extra rack and an extra QSC power amp, so I'm thinking of just finding another pre to toss in the rack. I could definitely find another BBE used at an affordable price.ToonaRockGuy wrote:Well, if you have another pre lying about, maybe you should have the hot BBE sent to the factory for a slight cool down. I think Port did that, I'll have to ask him tomorrow. But I know he barely messes with the gain and that rig is ripping like there's no tomorrow.
...maybe I could find the tube BBE and put the SS one in the practice rack. Hmm, so many possibilities.

Ah, gear talk. Love it!
Playing out gear...
Modded Fender Strats
Fender Standard Strat
Line 6 Spider ii 30W. Got it recently, love it. Initially got it for small places and
recording but I like it enough that I'll use it everywhere. Loud enough for small
places, mic it at bigger places. Call me converted.
FBVExpress foot controller
Ernie Ball Volume Pedal (A big, sturdy piece of steel that does it's job well and I can
beef someone upside the head with massive effect if needbe).
Boss DS-1 Distortion (Used to use this as a volume boost but don't really need it
anymore. Still keep it in the chain though. Never know. Might
have an idea mid-song and want to see what happens).
Behringer UC100 Chorus (Needed a replacement fast when my old one went for the
upteenth time and found this one really cheap. Works great,
sounds way better than it should for the price I paid. Was going
to be a quick fix for one weekend but I'm goin' to use it till it dies).
Ibanez Flanger (TECHNICALLY, this is a nice, expensive pedal. But, there are
Flangers I've had or used that I like much better. I use Flange more
than any other effect so you'd think I'd've replaced this after MANY
years of just being marginally satisfied. BUT NO, I still use it and
probably will another MANY years, all the while thinking I need to
get a new one.)
D.O.D. Phaser (D.O.D. Pedals do their thing great, I've used this a long time
and can get a myriad of effects with it from a shift to a pseudo-wah
(In conjunction with the Flanger. More of a cool Boss FT-2 sound),
but the switches on the old ones are a constant fixing-fest. I've had
several and no matter what model, what effect, the switches always
go. I don't know if this is still the case or not. Boss pedals, with
the exception of Overdrives or Distortions, I don't think sound as
good as D.O.D.s but they're much sturdier.)
Also have this old, BIG, blue Russian-made wah. Need new pots for it so it's not
in the setup at the moment. Someday.

My main setup is a Gibson Gothic SG with a Seymour Duncan installed in the bridge, a Mesa Boogie Single rectifier with lead channel, a Marshall Mode Four 4x12 cabinet (this mother is so heavy to carry)
My current pedalboard setup: tuner, Boss comp/sustainer, Morley Bad Horsie wah, Boss Tremolo, Boss Super Chorus, and Boss Digital Reverb.
I have been looking for a guitar with double locking Floyd that will have a similar sound to my SG...

I like it alot Chad,it's a hybrid that uses 3 12AX7's on the tube channel. The solid state preamp sounds pretty good as well. The clean is solid state. Randall incorporated a 6 band eq. in the head itself which is cool and it can be run on any channel, same goes with the effects loop. It is MIDI capable also, haha,I have no freakin' clue how to use it yet!! They put in it a Valve Dynamic power amp(up to 400 watts at 2 ohms) which helps replicate the feel of a tube power amp and a master volume. They list for 1200 new,I got it from a dude in Cleveland for $800 w/ shipping(ebay) which he had bought it at the end of December. Here's the link if ya wanna check it out.

what i use:
Black Ibanez RG
Blue Schecter C-1 Diamond Series
Ibanez halfstack. BOSS GT-6 Processor.
The only thing i own above is the Schecter!
I need to get my own gear again and build my own sound.
The first move, is Getting a Dimarzio Evolution pickup for the Schecter.
As far as a head and cab..i have NO CLUE what to do.

Re: whats your guitar set-up?
Hey Mike, is that really the order your effects are in? You should try putting the delay last in line. You are tone shaping the delay instead of delaying the tone shaping.mjb wrote:i've seen this for basses but i don't think guitars, mine is simple, fender strats (clapton and a 57' reissue into an Ibanez dl10 delay which i use a little for reverb into a original ts-9 tubescreamer into an old original crybaby into a reissue 59' Fender tweed Bassman, sweeeeet!
The order of the TS-9 and wah doesn't really matter except that you may be getting some extra solid state distortion from the wah since they are designed to work with a pickup level input, not the higher level you are getting from the TS-9.
If you are happy with the sound you have though, just ignore this.

yeah ron, that really is the order i have it in
i really just added the delay just for that tinge of reverb since the bassman has none. i don't really get to play my electrics that much since the baby came and to sit here by myself and play electric guitar gets boring to me pretty quick. sometimes it's allright but i play alot of acoustic, aalways have. the electric guitar unaccompanied seems, i don't know, lame. that's just my opinion but i'm gonna check out what you suggested. i do like and am happy now, the way it sounds, it's mean, and thats the way i like it. i'll let you know when i try that, will ther be a big difference? i think around the house here it really doesn't matter, when i do play it's at such a low volume i'm not getting any tone anyway, thats why right now i don't even bother playing electric. no volume= no tone = no fun. the brite side is: the new shop/jamroom will be going up in a couple months and i will have tone again and jam nights! again. thanks for the insight ron.

I'm just starting to get back into playing electric guitar again, I have all the components for what i want to buy, and what im definitly planning on getting in the initial stages of my purchasing frenzy, so here goes...
I am buying a PRS Tremonti SE, taking out the standard PRS pickups and replacing them with a Tremonti neck pickup, and a Dragon II bridge pickup, also putting either Grover or Schaller locking tuners on it and Schaller strap locks. Definitly going to replace the pots with original PRS Tremonti pots, as well as the knobs because i heard the pots are very noisy.
As far as an amp goes, im trying to decide on weather i want a Hughes & Kettner Matrix solid state amp, or if i want to wait a while and go all out on a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier. As for effects, i'll probably just run a Morely Tremonti Power wah and a metal zone MT-2 distortion pedal, because i really dont require much as far as effects go. I will probably also buy a chorus pedal too, not quite sure. I definitly want to have a smaller combo amp to piss around with, so i might get a Line 6 Spider II or something of that nature.
As for my current rig, i have 2 Audio Technica wireless microphones, one is a DR1600 and the other one is a Freeway...basically because im a singer...but i loved BadDazeRob's AKG wireless mic, so i might end up getting one of those bad boys (I believe it's an AKG, correct me if im wrong) It was kick ass, and really sounded clear, even though he sings out of key.

Ken, just some thoughts - If your planning on buying a guitar and then changing out all of the electronics right off the bat, do you think that you should be buying that particular guitar in the first place? It's pretty much standard practice to buy a Fender and rip out the noisy single-coils in favor of rail pickups or something, but I just don't know if throwing down the coin for a PRS warrants a change of the pickups and electronics right off of the bat. Of course, if you're looking used, then it won't be so expensive. That's why I'll never buy a Schecter Stilleto bass brand new. I know that the first thing I would be doing is pulling the EMG pickups and replacing them with Bartolinis. The price of doing that just doesn't warrant going that route, but if I found one used, I may consider it. They are very cool basses.
I'm a fan of Mesa gear, but the Hughes and Kettner stuff is very nice. I've always called it Boogie on a Budget. If you're really set on the Rectifier though and it's not to big of a deal to wait, I'd get it. I've bought gear that I needed because I was gigging, but really didn't want. I was never happy until I got the actualy piece I had my heart set on.
Rob does use an AKG. He was using Nady mics before he picked that up, and the quality was very noticable on the first gig. Of course, as you said, he still has trouble staying in key much to the chagrin of psycho sound engineers.

Well, it looks like I have to eat crow. I stopped into Emporium today to buy some strings and saw a really sweet Schecter Stilleto Custom hanging on the wall. The Deathmaster plugged it in and fired it up. It's rare that I pick up a bass and it just knocks me out, but I was VERY impressed with the sound of it, even though I generally dislike EMG electronics. I'd probably like Barts more, but who knows. It was a great sounding bass with a tight focused low, highs that weren't nasally or introduced excess amounts of finger noise, and mids that were present but didn't become honky or muddy. I've never played a 35 inch scale five string before. The B was INCREDIBLE on this thing. It was one of the tighest and most focused Bs I've had the chance to play on.
I think that I have found what my next bass purchase will be.
