Van Halen (music)--a band that has made more headlines over the past decade for its offstage drama than for its musical endeavors--is continuing that trend, this time for reportedly deciding to neither perform during, nor appear on stage to accept, its induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
According to Launch Radio Networks, rockers Velvet Revolver (music) will perform in Van Halen's place, and VR frontman Scott Weiland and guitarist Slash will speak on the band's behalf. The report indicated that it remains unknown whether any of Van Halen's past or present members will attend the event.
Former members--David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony--have hinted in recent weeks that they would likely be on hand, but uncertainty has reigned in the wake of the recent announcement that a summer 2007 Van Halen reunion tour that would have re-teamed Roth with founding members Eddie (guitar) and Alex (drums) Van Halen--along with Eddie's 15-year-old son, Wolfgang, filling in for Anthony--has been indefinitely postponed.

I am a longtime and HUGE fan of Roth-era Van Halen. But the repeated Roth reunion teaze jobs since 1996 have finally (though I should have come to this realization much sooner) made me realize this band has been dead since 1985. While The Police embark on a well-publicized, well-organized, and sold out reunion tour, Eddie Van Halen continues his steep descent into rock and roll lunacy. Over the past 2-3 months - Announce new bassist-Wolfgang Van Halen! Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction announcement! Announce "reunion" tour with Roth but no Mike Anthony! Cancel "reunion" tour one month later! Now, Eddie and Alex might not attend much less perform at the rock and roll hall of fame induction?!?! Without Roth, Eddie may have been a reasonably well known shredder like Vai and Satriani but not the rock legend he's become. One CD in the last decade! One tour (ill-fated Sammy reunion in 2004) since 1999! This guy blows. I've given up hope that he'll ever get it right. Bring on new DLR or even Mike Anthony solo CDs. Like 'em or not, Roth and Mike are still functional - working, touring, recording.
Screw VH ... in any incarnation. IMHO, a band that reaches this level has an obligation to the fans not to be a bunch of dickheads.
I think the fact that they can't seem to get together even for an appearance, let alone for a reunion tour, shows what kind of putzes they are, both individually and collectively.
Roth seriously needs to remove head from said rectum and realize it's not 1986 and he's no longer cool. He'd be a lot cooler if he'd just shut his ƒü©king mouth and perform the songs that made him what he was.
(I know, I know, how can he sing if his mouth is shut ...)
Today, David Lee Roth is just a balding-but-still-wearing-a-mullet "Gary Coleman" who won't say, "Watchyou talkin' 'bout, Willis?" anymore, only he's taller and white.

BDR,
Ya. Ya know, it seems like they're trying REALLY hard to find a way to cash
in on a possible reunion but JUST can't get it done.
At some point the VH brothers'll be sitting there in their rocking chairs and
realize that anyone who cared is too old to make it to a concert. Yet...Roth'll
be willing to squeeze in the spandex for a try...albeit with help from a day
care provider and an iron lung.
Hagar and Anthony seem to be having a great time doing their thing.
It is also pretty sad that the only music news around is about old guys
who get together for reunion tours (See: Jimmy Page Riff to Save the World).

Michael Anthony has to be one of the luckiest guys in music. He just so happened to have been with a great guitar player, drummer, and frontman in the late 70's. He is a very mediocre bass player but the guy sure can sing the high parts. I saw the Hagar version of Van Halen on their first tour together in the mid 80's. Anthony's playing was very basic and his Jack Daniels bass guitar throw it on the ground and make nothing but noise solo was a joke. I was impressed though that he could sing the high harmony vocal parts above Sammy. I liked the Hagar version of Van Halen as well as the Roth version but I liked Sammy's solo and Montrose stuff better. The first Montrose album is still one of my all time favorite hard rock albums of all time. Not a bad song on it.
Mox,
Ya, the old Michael Anthony bass solo wasn't much beyond some noise
and iced tea in a Jack Daniels bottle..but theatrics can go a long way I
guess.
I think he'd probably be able to show more if he did a solo album or
recorded with Hagar or something. I've read who-knows-how-many
articles with Edward and he was basically going to hold Anthony to
root-notes, no matter what (Yet, VH was wanting Billy Sheehan to join
VH? Would'a ended way earlier if that had happened).
I mean, for Pete's sake, he's played for over 40 years and all around
the world several times. I'd hope there's more to his playing than it
seems. Then again, Dee Dee Ramone...

I'm going to have to disagree somewhat. I've always considered Michael Anthony to be a very good hard rock bassist. Sure, he's no Marcus Miller or Stanley Clarke, but when it comes to laying down a great rock pocket, I have to give credit where credit is due. Just listen to Anthony's groove in Poundcake. He can also be very tasteful and play some melodically interesting things (e.g., Right Now). I've also always dug his tone too. It sounds like he's a Gallien-Krueger guy, but I'm not sure.
EDIT: Just did some research - It turns out that MA is currently using Ampeg equipment, including both SVT-4PRO and SVT-2PRO. That's where that fat, solid tone comes from!

Paul,
Agreed, the guy is the bottom where Edward can do whatever. I don't
know if you've seen his live "solo" though. It's just not one of his strengths,
seemingly. At the same time, I'm sure there aren't many bands touring
where the bass player has a "solo" nowadays. Fortunately, there probably
aren't many bands touring where ANYONE does a solo. Just my opinion, but
I'd rather hear the several songs of which these take the place.
I will say, ya, as a kid I though seeing someone do a long guitar thing was
cool (Saw Van Halen's, Johnson's, Gilberts's, Lynch's, etc., etc.) but just
have no interest any longer.
Guess if I went to a G3 show it'd be pretty cool, but otherwise, not-so-much.

i don't even remember even hearing any bass on van halen till for unlawful cardinal knoledge
maybe i just got a better stereo around then, but i liked everything VH did up to and including that album. i think i liked them a little better with hagar they seemed a LITTLE more mature with sammy and i think i just grew away from daves screams and stuff although they were cool back in the day and i still get a chuckle when i'm driving down the road and hear one in the background. it does take me back to when things were alot simpler in my life and always puts a smile on my face.
its ashame about ed, he used to be such THE MAN, now hes such the dick.
i never dabbled much in the tapping thing, but man, iremember hearing that, and at it was like WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT. that tone he had was just the coolest. from guitar god to not even being able to get somebody to play bass for him besides his minor child. ed has become such a dick, wolfie probobly going to quit next
who knows, maybe we'll see an add on here. 80s rock and roll band needs bass player for reunion tour

Did anyone see Eddie's NAMM 2007 videos? Fender was so proud to bring him onboard that they posted his presentations on YouTube. The dude was in bad shape. Whether he was speaking or playing, he was in a fog.
Note to Fender: 2007 is Andy Summers' year instead. Hope his number is in your Rolodex. Sell some Tele's.

Nothing can be more true than that. At least he realizes it .."I have zero social skills and I don't know how to act, so I get drunk. And then I make a real ass out of myself."
I would like to see the Eddy Fender, have a link?? this is his third endorsement ?? Kramer, Peavey, Fender ...

Here is a video of the Fender Guitar: I can never get over how much of a good guitar player he is. I always liked that Van Halen Sound.

Here he is at NAMM: He looks terrible

I can not find a pic of his fender anywhere .. All I find are charvels ..

It's going to be a separate brand called EVH, or something like that. There's nothing out at the moment, except for the ultra-expensive (25 grand) replicas of his red striped guitar. There should be new EVH amps and stuff eventually. Who knows though, now that there's no Hall of Fame appearance and no tour. This was supposed to be a year for warm fuzzy VH nostalgia, not tabloid-fodder implosions.f.sciarrillo wrote:I can not find a pic of his fender anywhere .. All I find are charvels ..
Fender owns Charvel which is the only reason Eddie climbed on the Fender money train. With Eddie it has been all about the money for a lot of years now. As far as endorsements there were more than 3 lets see there was Charvel (black and white and black and yellow guitars first 2 albums) then Kramer with the 5150 and hot for teacher guitars, then Ernie Ball Axis guitars, then Peavey with the Wolfgangs. Now Charvel again which is the only reason that Fender is now involved with him. Fender is suppose to come out with an EVH amp which from what I heard is a ripoff of the 5150 head since Fender has never produced an amp with that kind of tone they are stealing one.
Then out of shear stupidity they come out with the 30,000 dollar Frankenstrat knock off when they cant sell the $2500 Charvels in all 3 stripe jobs. It is an will continue to be all about the money hell Eddie even has copyrights on the paintjobs (and I know as i have heard from his lawyers about it).
The drunken piece of shit should be greatful that people are still interested instead of worrying about how he can make money out of being a has been. And watch there will be a tour sooner or later just because of the money and it will be pathetic just like the last tour regardless of who is in the line up.

Good points. Fender is still the best Guitar, ever. Looking at some of the pics (Small ones anyhow) you can see that it is a Charvel. I thought they quit making those, guess I was wrong. Of course, Eddie will probably be the only person playing one.paul wrote:Fender owns Charvel which is the only reason Eddie climbed on the Fender money train. I wouldn't give $30 for that beat down Frankenstein. Fender will be making a killing on those, what's the cost to them maybe a couple hundred at the most per unit. No guitar built today is worth that, I don't care who's name is on it. Good to see he's finally back in rehab, but I doubt it will help. How an ICON can fall from grace....sad!!!!
