I made a bass last year and ran into a similar problem. I used a "60's" Vox neck which are extremly narrow and I couldn't find a bridge that would work. I solved the problem by getting a Fender "Vintage Style" bass bridge which has "threads" instead of slots to hold the strings. The phillps screws that hold the saddels don't screw into the middles of the saddels but are offset a bit so I reversed a couple of them and then drilled new holes in the back of the bridge so they would line up a little better.

I know that this is hard to explain but take a look.

Stewart-MacDonald's website is a good resource for technical info on hardware and they carry a little of everything. Here's a Schaller bridge that's adjustable from 2" to 2-3/16" string spacing:

Here's my new project. It's an Ibanez RG covered in python skin. 2 humbuckers, and a hardtail bridge. I should have it done by the end of the week.
