Drum Night
Drum Night
Drum Night - A bunch of passionate drummers, joining together to talk drums / percussion, watch some Video DVDs, and share some chops / techniques / tricks on the Kit.
On Wednesday March 10, 2004, between the hours of 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM, there is going to be another Drummer get-together. Thanks to Rob Bonsell - we are fortunate enough to have access to the Tyrone High School’s Band Room.
Our Topic of discussion, or our focus, at this session is going to be on Rudiments, but not limited thereto. It has been decided that we would work, as a group, on the first 13 of the standard 26 NARD Rudiments. This is going to be a learn-from-one-another approach. Drummers of all levels are welcome to attend.
There will be two Drum Sets and numerous Practice Pads available. Just bring Sticks, and perhaps some Tylenol…

Wow, rudiments! The one thing I have been thinking about alot lately. I regret never taking the time to seriously learn them. I'm there. How do you get to the Tyrone High School from the new 22 coming from Ebensburg? I can't put into words how awsome I think it is that you guys are doing this. Excellent idea

We feel the last drum night was a huge success. Only 5 of us attended and we want to expand our group. If you are anxious about getting together, don't worry- It's all about having fun and sharing ideas. We are going to start having these as regularly as we can, try to get a network of drummers and go to concerts and clinics. It's a very cool idea and thanks to Randy Sciarillo for putting these things together. So, if you want to attend, let us know!

What are the purpose of the rudiments?
were they created as a snare drum teaching aid?
will knowing them make you a better drummer on the kit?
are the rudiments to drumming what phonics is to speach?
I have a long drive home from work and when i read this post i started asking myself those questions about the rudiments. I have been playing drums in cover bands for many years and although i know of the rudiments, i don't think i've ever sat down and practiced them, except the paradiddle, it just has a great feel to it when you break it up around the kit.
I'm not trolling or trying to be a metalrules, i'm just asking because I don't know.

Rudiments have a few purposes. The first being organization...After all, they are just combinations of different sticking patterns. With organization, drummers can communicate what drumming is. How would drums be teached without rudiments? If everything was word of mouth, there would be no set teaching methods or anything like that. The second purpose I believe is chops building. If you can master every rudiment at a fast tempo, there will be nothing you can't play. They open your mind to how rythems and notes are put together, and you have a better understanding of drumming.
I don't believe rudiments were created for an aid, they were most likely standardized for future reference when it came to playing. So, when someone sees a certain sticking pattern, they automatically recognize it as say a..paradiddle-diddle, and they can play it easily. This way, drumming can be expanded and have a set standard, just like anything else.
Knowing rudiments will most definitely make you better on kit. They will help you get faster, they will help you get around the set quicker and in ways you would never think of. They help with creativity, throw a bunch of rudiments into a fill and see what happens...If you are already good at the set and don't know rudiments, you will be so much better by learning. But a lot of times, you already play certain rudiments, you just don't know it. Like I said, it will open you up to more possibilities in your playing, and that can't hurt!
Rudiments can be compared to phonics and speech, but as Bill Hockerl mentioned to myself and others, they are a tool for the drummer. The more tools you have, the more you can do. A carpenter can't build a house without a hammer, so why not learn the tools of the trade?
Everyone that wants to get better shoud try to come out and learn something, I learn everytime I'm with other drummers, whether they be novice or pro's. It can't hurt, and you CAN teach an old dog new tricks! (BOBBY!!!

Take I-99 North until Tipton/Grazierville exit. Take that exit and veer right onto old 220 north. Follow until Pizza Hut in Tyrone(about 2 miles or so) Make the first left at the Corner of Pizza Hut. Follow that road and veer right at the stop sign(the sign is a stop unless turning right sign) Follow that road and the high school will be the second big building. The band room is on the far end of the school when you come in from the way I described. Take the last entrance to the school, right before the Tyrone Hospital entrance. Help at all??? Let me know any questions. Thanks Guys!
And hey, if Bobby goes, you know it can't be THAT painfull

Hey Rob… Phil Hopnick (Shift) and Wally (Second Offense) are planning on attending.
Toby - I’m sorry to hear you can’t make this one. I always enjoy hangin’ with you. Call me sometime… we’ll make some noise.
[redawg] - If it is not a bother bringing your stuff... do so. I'm sure everyone would be interested in learning about the electronic kit.

Wow! Excellent! I'm finally gonna be able to learn the Tool songs I've always wanted to learn. I'm certain that the reason I'm having a hard time learning some of his chops is not knowing the rudiments. This is totally gonna open up my world drumming wise. It's no problem at all bringing equipment. I'll help out any way I can. I'd like to meet with one of you like an hour before the rest show up to set up. Please let me know if that is possible. I don't want to cut into our playing time by having to start setting stuff up at 6:00.
